It seems to be a polarizing scent, right?
Once, I drove through Dairy Queen for a milk shake. I took a drink as I drove away, and the cup had enough patchouli on it (transferred from someone's hands?) that I couldn't eat the milk shake.
I drove back around and they made me another, unscented milk shake.
I'm not a fan.

i could hate it, i could not hate it but not wear it and it depends.... a friend used to wear it in small amounts and with her body chemistry or whatever, it smelled really nice. every other time i have smelled it, i dislike it. so i didn't reply to the poll.

I have no idea. I can't equate the word to a scent. But I am a fan of Al Stewart's song "Year of the Cat" which uses the word patchouli in the lyrics.

It is the worst smell.
It’s the smell of a dirty, unwashed, drug addicted, cat hoarder trying to coverup the scent of her condemned apartment 🤢🤮

It brings back good memories for me as my best friend in college wore it. She doesn't anymore.

I associate it with some fun times and questionable choices from college. I wouldn’t choose it as a scent now.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. I sometimes wear Shalimar perfume (the original, the Vanilla and the Tonka) and I love it when I first spray it on, but sometimes after about 30mins I can 'taste' the patchouli and it really puts me off wearing it. I don't overspray this one, just two short sprays but the pachouli pops out of this more than any other note. When I smell it in the bottle...I love it, but when it migrates to my mouth I hate it.
The same used to happen with Angel at first I loved it then I couldn't bear it and gave it away.

My husband and I used to own a few glass ahops (bongs, pipes, functional art glass).
I have had enough whiffs of patchouli laden hippies to last me an eternity.
No to patchouli. Just no.

I effing hate it!!! Yea harsh words but damn it’s terrible. I was at Starbucks this week and a lady walked in who bathed in it and I got an instant migraine and I had to toss my my oatmeal and coffee because the next bite and sip tasted like it. And all she did was walk through, get her drink and leave. DH bought some soap with patchouli in it and not only did I make him toss the soap and open then bathroom window, I also made him reshower. Our bathroom is attached to our room and I ended up sleeping on the couch because the smell just wouldn’t go away. And it’s not like I have an allergy to scents, i wear Inis and my DD wears different perfumes from Victorias Secret but patchouli just kicks my butt. And it seems like you can’t just put on a little everyone I know that loves it seems to bathe in it.

Pachouli oil is only one version - it's used in a lot of perfumes...Angel, Coco Mademoiselle, Miss Dior, Jimmy Choo, Flowerbomb, Gucci Flora and even Jo Malone's English Pear & Freesia just to name a few of the common ones. So it's not exclusive to "hippies"

You mentioned Shalimar in your earlier post. My mom wore that perfume when I was a kid.

Because of its very strong scent, people used it to mask the smell of pot in the 70s. My ex had this cloth belt thing that he soaked in it. He left it at my house one day and my mom just about threw up when she came home from work. I wrapped the belt thing in a towel and then put that into a plastic bag and into my dresser drawer to try to clear the smell from my room. She could still smell it when in her own room down the hall!
I had to call him to come and pick it up because it wasn’t staying in our house overnight. The scent lingered on the towel that I wrapped it in too. Mom threw the towel in the trash.

Patchouli as an element of a fragrance is quite different than the patchouli doused people many of us think of when we hear the word. But it isn't really - it's the exact same oil from the leaf of that plant., the smell of it doesn't change, just in perfume it's mixed with other scents as well. I have the same "taste" reaction to it no matter if it's the pure oil or it's in a perfume. I actually like the smell of it...but I don't like how I can taste it. I was just musing over all the people saying they "hate" it - probably having liked a perfume pachouli in it at some point. My mom wore that perfume when I was a kid. Did you like it then? It was probably even stronger back then too, pretty much all of the current versions of older perfumes much weaker now than their original formulations.

I have no idea what it smells like, so I have no opinion on the scent.
However, I dislike strong scents in general, and the worst is getting on an elevator after someone who is doused in perfume. Ugh! I don't even necessarily find perfume "unpleasant" if applied lightly, but the strong scents get to me. If it was something that smells as bad as some of you are describing patchouli, I would probably gag at the person wearing it.
I haven't worn perfume since we got married 31 years ago because DH has such a bad reaction to the scent. Poor guy had a nurse during his hospital stay this week who wore a heavy perfume and gave him a headache. He had to ask that she not come into his room, and they assigned him another nurse. I can't believe "no perfume" isn't a rule in a hospital setting. Besides those who react poorly to the scents, what about those suffering from nausea? Or a pregnant woman with an extreme sense of smell? It just seems inappropriate.

The are rules regarding perfume, colognes, aftershaves and scents in general in every hospital and medical facility I have ever work in. That nurse was in violation which was why your DH was so easily given a change of nurses, no questions asked!

I hate patchouli. It can trigger a migraine. I would rather smell cat piss on any given day then smell that-at least I know cat piss won’t give me a migraine!

It’s a no from me. I think a Madonna CD had patchouli on it. Loved the CD, hated the scent.

It was probably even stronger back then too, pretty much all of the current versions of older perfumes much weaker now than their original formulations. I used to love the way my mom smelled. Pressing my face into her neck when she hugged me is one of my most vivid sense memories. 😪❤️ I do like fragrances that have patchouli in them, but the patchouli is just an element of those fragrances. My FIL wears a cologne that I can't remember the name of, and the notes of vanilla and tobacco work well with the patchouli. I've met people who use patchouli liberally. Or in lieu of washing. And let me tell you, that is also a vivid sense memory for me 😄 And being able to taste a scent is just ugh. I feel the same way about rosewater. In small doses or as a compliment to other scents, it's lovely. But a bit too much and I find it unpleasant.

No, no, no! Why of all scents to many patchouli wearers need to bathe in it?? I associate it in particular with a former (unpopular) colleague who would wear so much you could smell it in the hall after he left. It was like a nonverbal "yeah, ya still have to deal with me after I leave, FU." I think he also used it to cover up the scent of pot. It is rank to me. Now sandalwood, I still love. But no to Patouli. Ev-ah!
