My 30-something daughter has spent hours and hours applying for Work-at-Home jobs. She has a good resume, availability and she presents herself well. No results....just a lot of spam messages. We keep hearing about how many remote jobs there are....are there really? Is there a secret to getting them?? Does anyone know anything about this? TIA.

My experience (at least in my field) is that they don't really exist. Most work from home jobs are for employees who had been working at the company before the pandemic and then those employers decided that they could continue working from home. I looked and looked and I am convinced that the jobs that they say are remote are just phishing scams. These are really good companies but I never receive any response and I am perfectly qualified for the position. I check every single box.
The biggest scam right now is they say the job is remote but when you quit your other job and then go the first day they mention that in fact, the job is not remote. Then you are stuck.
Fewer and fewer jobs are remote these days. Most companies are opting for a hybrid schedule.

My oldest just finished a remote contract job that was part time (she’s a full time student). The agency she uses had another remote job lined up for her but she had to turn it down because they wanted full time only.
My recommendation is to go through a placement agency rather than applying to jobs listed online. Also, in both cases, the company was local to us and wanted her available to come in to the office once in a while.

Good at home jobs usually involve some kind of specialized training - like software coding, medical transcriptionist, medical coding. I have a friend that teaches English to overseas students but she already had a teaching degree.

It depends on the field.
So many jobs are now work at home, that didn't use to be. In fact, about 80% of my group of friends all work from home, when we all used to work in an office
There are some good jobs out there...unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers too

Is she looking for full time? I know of some part time gigs that are legit.

My DIL worked for www.upwork.com/It has been 6 years ago, but she worked for jobs she found on this site. She was then hired permanently for the company and still works from home. As described to me--company posted the position and what was required and then she replied with "I'll do this for xx pay." Perhaps she was selected, perhaps not. Eventually she recognized companies for whom she wanted to work and they recognized her as someone whose work they liked. --As fast as the world changes now, the way that site works may have changed.

My niece was working for United Airlines in reservations and eventually customer service ==all from home. She began with them in an office, then someone figured out it could happen from home and she worked from home. After covid hit, and travel declined, she was offered retirement (she was in her early 50s at the time).

I work in IT for a hospital/health network. Until the pandemic we had no work from home jobs. Now much of our IT and support people (such as call centers) can work from home. Many of our server and network people are work from home but many still have to go in or at least be able to get to our data centers. However many project managers and application people are now entirely work from home and I have noticed a trend in that more are being hired that are not even living in our state…which you would have never seen 3 years ago.
So that was a long rambling response to say I think project managers, service centers, and application administrators are some jobs that are really good work from home jobs.

I know American Express is frequently hiring for work from home positions. On their website you can filter for Remote as the job location.
I’m currently hiring for two positions (manager and director) that can be remote or work from an office. We hired two remote managers on my team last year.

I think it depends on your field, experience, and the companies.
Little to no experience, maybe just a high school diploma? You might be able to do a customer service job from home. But you will need a good set up and probably experience in basically handling phone calls from all over. You might get lucky and can do data entry of some sort on a local level. A friend of mine does title searches/transfer for title companies and real estate locally.
Specialized training such as coders, medical coding, transcripts is a possibility but you may have to go in once in a while for training or whatever.
Other jobs are dependent on the industry. DH works from home because 99% of his job can be done on the computer. As long as he can access the company's servers, he can work pretty much anywhere. He goes into the office once every other week and out to job sites at least once a week. So it's not 100% work from home. He said a lot of engineering jobs that don't require a lab or building stuff (like mechanical engineering) are hybrid or remote. My sister's job with the government is hybrid now.

Yes, there are absolutely telecommuter jobs. It’s not a scam. I work for a fortune 10 company and most of our office jobs are either full time or part time telecommuter.
Since the pandemic, just in my area, we’ve given up leases on 6 local buildings and the one remaining large building is half empty. The company realized telecommuting works for the masses.
What is your daughters field of work? Is she just applying for anything WFH regardless of her field of work? If so, that’s the problem.

If anyone has good work-at-home PT temp work, let me know. I would love a summer PT job. One of my sons has a crazy practice schedule, and I still need to drive him for one more summer, so I can't really have a reg PT summer job, but I am ready to make a little extra money.

Some airline reservation agents work from home. Great gig and travel benefits. There are a lot of options, but your dd will need to do some digging.

DD has done banking customer service from home. When she started, she had no bank/finance experience, it was more about her people skills.

My last two roles have been fully remote — I’m a marketing director in tech.
In my field, it seems like more than 60% of the jobs these days are remote or are hybrid (work 1-3 days in office and the rest remote).
So yes…there are a lot of good remote jobs, but it definitely depends on your industry.

Unless you get in with a company that offers it as part of the description as a perk; those ads you see, that just say work from home for $30/hr., to me they don't exist. I am working at the office 3 days a week and 2 days home (sometimes 3 days home). The job didn't promote it much but was more introduced during the interview phase.
I had an opportunity for a friend to work her as well.. but she said she was going to work from home starting at $30. It will be interesting to see if she is going to get a job like that. Another friend did end up filling our vacancy. She is thrilled.

I've worked fully remote for eight years - the first three in commercial lending for a national bank (that wasn't really remote-friendly but I'd worked there for 12 years and they were motivated to keep me). The past five years have been in various tech and tech-enabled companies. All three of the companies I've worked for in the tech world have been remote-only or remote-first.
Because I'm in tech, there are loads of remote work options available. However, they're not going to be as common in more traditional industries.
There are tons of great companies out there with remote work options, but there are also a lot of scams. I'd suggest she focuses on looking for the industry first, and then remote. By focusing on the remote aspect as her priority, she's getting funneled to the scammier openings.

I started a new job about 9 months ago, in the tech industry, and I work from home. No tech experience prior to this.
What state is your daughter in? We only have remote employees in a few states, but if she’s in one of them I’d be happy to send some information over.

I've been working fully remote for three years now. Currently, I handle the accounting responsibilities for two retail Insurance agencies. I even interviewed remotely. The insurance industry is really hurting for accounting professionals. I think, in general, accounting is a great industry for work at home positions.

I have several neighbors who work office jobs for large companies, from home. In every case they were working in person until Covid, then were switched to remote and remain that way. I don’t think remote workers are giving up those jobs.

I've been working from home as a Medical Coder since 2020. I worked hard for my certification, and I already had 20+ years of insurance experience.

If she has skills already she can capitalize on, that’s the way to go. I’m a (retired) marketing copywriter/copyeditor/proofreader, and there were always both in-person and WFH opportunities in those areas.

Have her look into Customer Success positions. Have her look at some of her favorite apps and then look at "careers" - a lot of customer success or customer support positions are remote these days. Tech companies loooove to hire legit users of their product to support customers.(speaking from experience!)

My ex has a remote job, for a govt contractor. It seems to be a good, legit job. I don’t think it was applied for expressly as remote though it has just evolved as such and plus he’s a disabled veteran so I think that factors into their decisions.
I hope your daughter can find something decent soon.
I also have heard about a recent active duty mil person working remote so it’s def not gluing obsolete!
But his company also says they don’t intend to really go back to corporate offices. But they were a lot of remote/office sharing before the pandemic too.

I work for Humana and they hire many work at home positions throughout the country. My company recently merged with Humana and it's a great company to work for. I also have several friends who work here that are all work from home. Have her check out their careers page.

My daughter works from home for a media company but that was her college degree. It is a company that was in person but switched to remote during the pandemic. She has worked there for a year and she was told that eventually they would be hybrid but it hasn’t happened yet.
