Maybe I could start a little Youtube channel called Boring Kansas Scenery.
I could expense expenses for tax purposes. These dogs are here for Drone Content-- expense them! I need special sunglasses and shoes for drone endeavors... expense them! Even a drone operating bra, maybe.
Dad is on his second drone, which has never left his kitchen.
The first one escaped on its maiden voyage and never called or wrote home.

My daughter is a certified drone pilot. She was just talking about this the other day and the things you can/cannot do. I took this from the web but it's what she was talking about.
"In addition to registering your aircraft, you'll need to follow the rules of the sky. They include:
Fly at or below 400 feet Keep your drone within sight Don't fly in restricted airspace Don't fly near other aircraft, especially near airports Don't fly over groups of people Don't fly over stadiums or sporting events Don't fly near emergency response efforts such as fires Don't fly under the influence Many of these are simply common sense, which you need to use when flying. In addition to the FAA rules, remember that National Parks have banned the use of drones within their confines. It's a shame, because aerial footage of beautiful locations like Yellowstone and Yosemite is a compelling reason to own a drone. On the other hand, some places should be free of technological distractions. The airspace around Washington DC is also restricted."

I have a drone that I use mostly to make travel videos - though as time goes on, I travel with it less and less, since the restrictions are getting tighter and tighter. In addition to the national park rules listed above, you cannot fly a drone within a certain radius of an airport or helipad. Do you know how many helipads there are in major city centers? A lot, LOL. We just returned from Rio de Janeiro and I didn't take it with me because with all the helipads around, there would be no place I could legally fly it.
Rural Kansas sounds like it's full of opportunity though - you can get lovely infinity shots of farm fields and that sort of thing.
Anyone who is seriously considering a drone should consider something like the Mavic Mini which weighs in at 249 grams. Most of the rules about registering the drone, etc. kick in with drones weighing 250 grams and up. It's a loophole. You still can't fly around airports or national parks, but you can get away with a lot more than you can with the bigger drones.

I have a DJI mini2 which weighs 249 grams..the batteries only last for about 30 minutes so definitely look for a bundle with more, or buy extras. I have a bright orange landing mat for when i land manually. Love the return to home feature in case you lose your sense of direction and battery is getting low. If you often fly in the sun you can get a magnetic sun shield to help see your screen better. My model has little joystick handles ton the remote that you remove and store on the remote when not in use, take care when attaching or removing that you don’t drop them as they are small. I have an inexpensive foldout table to use when flying in areas with nothing but ground to set things on.
Best advice - watch YouTube videos!

They can be a lot of fun, and of course you can get lots of pictures/footage you couldn't get otherwise. DH is on his maybe 3rd or 4th drone - a DJI.
Just keep in mind that if you are going to use it for any non-personal purposes that there are testing/licensing requirements - a fairly serious test covering a lot of stuff that DH went to a week-long class to prep for. He was surprised that he had to go through all that even to use it on behalf of his government employer. It's been super worth it, though, because he was able to leverage that into the necessary certification to fly in Ireland when we went last summer, and some of the footage from that is unbelievable!
Some of the things he's used his to shoot (besides vacation pics & work): a steam train, the damn dog when he went walkabout, the extent of a grass fire, the roof of our house to check for storm damage, a cool video graduation message to a niece who had a 2020 non-graduation graduation.

I shot aerial photos of my girlfriend’s mother’s farm and property last year. She used to buy photos like that from a travelling photographer in an airplane - she would have them done every ten years or so. It’s cool to be able to DIY something like that now. While there I also flew low over her shed to check the roof for damage. They are a nifty little tool.

My son got a second minor in "Unmanned Aerial Systems" He had to get his FAA license as part of the coursework. He knows all the laws and is very dutiful to tell me where he can and can't fly when I make requests. Right now, in his spare time, he's building a model rocket that will launch a drone mid-flight.
It's a really fun hobby. He takes his drone on vacation. It's a great way to get scenery shots that you otherwise wouldn't. Not great for birding. Birds of prey will attack drones. And win.
