I have the daunting task of going through tens of thousands of photos that I took over the last decade. I've been dabbling in photography for a few years so I have way too many pictures on my hard drive. Plus we have 4 kids, so it's easy to get a bit carried away. I was thinking I should print the pictures that I keep and put them in an album. I have a couple of albums from our pre-digital days already. But now I wonder if that's a good idea. It will cost a ton of money to print all these pictures (my goal is to have about 4000, but I don't if that's realistic).
What do you do with all the pictures on your hard drives? Thanks for your tips.

Oh are we supposed to print them ugh no one told me that geez lol!
Yeah count me as one of those that has more photos on sticks, hard drives etc then in albums. Ugh I used to be so good about putting my photos into recognizable files ie Spencer's 12th birthday, now it is photos 2014(1) photos 2014 (2)lol and most of those files have like 500 random ass photos in them with good ones mixed with crappy ones.
Ugh I feel for you and have thought of doing the same task you are thinking of but I keep procrastinating on doing it!
My ultimate goal would be to Project life all my photos and do just simple journaling and cards with the photos in pocket type sleeves and be done with it.
Oh and did I mention that I have 12 yes 12 photo boxes of photos too that don't have a home other then the box they are stored in ugh it is just so overwhelming.
My tip although why you would want a tip from me lol is this start by culling all the photos you know you would never print.
After doing that then I would try to put them in more recognizable files if they aren't already like that.
You then would at least be able to print the ones you want and go from there.
Good luck!

I actively scrapbook, so yes, I definitely print pictures all the time.
I do still have a lot on my computer and one thing I did to help myself keep everything straight is to create a spreadsheet. The first column is where I write the date I uploaded them to the computer. The rest are for checkmarks for when I do the following: Edit (this includes deleting doubles & bad shots, cropping, removing red eye, etc.), Upload to Snapfish, Order photos.
This has made keeping track so much easier for me.

I don't print for myself but I do print for my kids. They each have a photo box to store them in.

I do. I wait until Clark has a good sale and I upload several months worth at a time. I am about a year and a half behind actually getting them into the albums though.

I print 120 photos a month. I scrapbook some--shh. Don't tell.
I frame a few. I put the rest in subdivided page protectors in chronological order.

I do, but I'm very behind. I mostly put them in photo albums for the boys but still dabble in some Project Life style sprucing up of the pages. I haven't truly scrapbooked in almost 5 years.
I found an offer on Facebook last week for 100 free prints a month from SnapFish for downloading their app onto my phone. I downloaded the app and uploaded some photos. A couple days later a message appeared in the app "You Did It! Thank you for being a Snapfish mobile customer. Enjoy 100 free prints each month for a year." In fine print: No coupon code needed. Mobile only. (I haven't tried to upload to my account from my computer and then order those photos from the mobile app yet.) Unused credits will expire at the end of the month. So, I'll try to upload some from my computer when I get a minute and see if I can print those through the app. If so, I'll be catching up on some printing. If not, I still take a ton of print worthy shots on my phone. Maybe not 100 a month, but free prints are free prints.

Lots of good ideas here to consider. I used to scrapbook and still have a few layouts to finish off. But I'm ready to move on on to other things/hobbies. Thanks for all your tips everyone. I really appreciate it.

I haven't printed any pictures in a few years. No desire to, except for the occasional one that I put into a frame.
Then, my mom brought up her old albums, the ones I haven't seen in 20 years.
It's an emotional trip to go through them - it's funny and heartbreaking and sometimes I smile and sometime I want to cry. I'm finding pictures of events that I'd completely forgotten, but the memories come flooding back. There are pictures of people that are gone, and pictures that those that are still here will pay to not be shown. Sometimes, I'm the one trying to figure out if I can get that "WhatTheHeckDidIDoToMyHair? OhmygerdMyMomDIDDressMeFunny!" picture out of the album before someone else sees it.
Anyway, my New Year's Resolution is to start printing out the pictures I have stored on my computer. And not just the "perfect" ones.

My phone camera is so good that I can take a picture of a picture in my mom's albums and it looks amazing.

I still print and scrapbook them, both traditional 12x12 layouts and some Project Life mixed in as well (but mostly traditionally scrapped).
I definitely encourage you to check out Project Life if you're looking for an easy way to put them away after printing. You can go very quickly if you have them in order and have a ton of the sheet protectors and a core kit ready to go.

I don't take many pictures, so I usually don't have a big backlog. I put photos in divided sheet protectors and add some journaling cards to document the details. I scrap the ones I feel are more important in an 8.5x11 or 12x12 size. That being said, I am still behind but not as much since switching to the divided protectors.

Yes, I still print my favs and then I scrapbook them. I haven't printed / scrapped as many photos as I would have liked to over the last handful of years because life has been conspiring against me, LOL. I haven't been able to unpack all of my stuff since we moved a couple years ago and that's been hard. But once my studio space is finished (I'm FINALLY in the process of getting my cabinets installed!!! Yay!) and I can unpack, sort through and organize everything it will be SO much easier to work on things when I have a little free time here and there. It's hard to make myself even start a page or a project when I know I only have xx number of minutes to work on it, and half of that time would be spent digging through boxes looking for things I know I've got only to have to pack it all back up again before making any real headway. Too frustrating, so I just don't even start.

PhotoAffections.com is offering a similar free 100 prints a month offer through their website. I just ordered our Christmas cards through them. I ordered them late Saturday night and they arrived today. Check them out, too.

Former professional photographer here. Print pictures people!! Technology changes and fails. But photos on print last. Printing is cheap and easy. Even if you don't get to albums or scrapbooks, please print.

I take a ton of pics and I have scanned a bunch of pre-digital. A few years ago, I started doing a shutterfly book for every year since DD was born. I managed to catch up like 16 years in a couple years of making the books. Obviously, the earlier years didn't have as big a selection cause I didn't scan all the photos, but I did find a local place that would scan 500 photos for $50. So I had about 1500 pics done which helped.
Now I make the books as the year goes on. I actually have this years book done until around mid November. So, I just really have to do my mom's BD, Thanksgiving and December photos and it's done. Like them so much better than photo albums. Then I just wait for a sale and order.

Hopefully I will get working on this in the coming year. I want to do a photo wall, so maybe that will spur me on. I take wayyy too many pictures Most are archived on an external drive and some are on CDs (full). It's a huge task now, yikes.

I do print pics, but not every one I take. I'd have a billion.
You could wait for the penny sales at Snapfish. It's 100 4x6" prints for $10 shipped or 300 4x6" prints for $30 shipped.
I'm also still a scrapper, so yeah, I print pics.

Occasionally. I usually wait for Shutterfly or Snapfish to have a sale and I order about 200 a year. I like to give prints to people, too. We're in a social media world and I assume everyone sees the photos, but that's not the case. I buy my albums at Home Goods or Marshalls and they are about $12-$15 and hold 500 photos. In the days when I scrapped, I shot hundreds of photos a month, but now it's much less and I can fit a couple of years in each album.

Yes I print because I scrap I don't do regular photo albums though Walgreens almost always has a 40% off coupon or you could do photo books like shutterfly. They would also save $ and space
