My poor sweet DH.
My 80 year old MIL was not in the greatest of health and had been in and out of the hospital the last few years. She struggled with heart problems AND diabetes. But yet, she always seemed to come back from the brink. We laughingly told her that she had way more lives than a cat! Tuesday, she was at home and was going from the salon (think den/living room) to the kitchen. As she was walking towards the kitchen, she fell and broke her hip.
The moment that I heard she had broken her hip, my heart sunk because I knew just how catastrophic this can be for elderly people. Even though I have been struggling with my radiation treatments (which finished the day before she fell), I went with my husband to see her that night. They had run out to buy a comfy air mattress to put in the salon until the next day while the family put together a game plan.
She was admitted into the hospital the next day and was doing okay. The doctors and anesthesiologist were quite concerned that a) she would make it through surgery and b) how she might struggle with the rehabilitation afterwards. But all agreed that surgery was necessary because of the bad break. DH went to see her that evening and they were giving her pain meds and other than nausea, she was talking and doing fine.
Thursday morning, the kids and DH were up and running around getting dressed for school and work. I had gone back to bed to rest. The phone rings and I could tell it was from the hospital. I honestly thought they were calling to tell me that his mother's surgery was scheduled for that morning. Then I could tell from his face immediately something was wrong. He started shouting for his mom and just fell onto a chair. We rushed to the hospital since they had to wait for the family to decided how to proceed. I had to drive my husband because he was just in total shock. It just broke me into a million pieces to watch her sons come in to kiss her forehead. There was no autopsy because they don't do that here unless there is suspicious circumstances. They also will bury the person within 24 hours. The hospital informed us that while she had a sudden high spike in glucose, they don't think it was enough to cause her death. They believe most likely it was thrombosis from her broken hip. The blessing is that it appears she passed in her sleep.
She was such a sweet woman and in the 23 years that I have known her, she has always treated me as I was one of her own. She has taught me so much about Palestinian cooking. Her and her husband fled war in Gaza in the late 60's to Morocco. She has told us some horror stories of those times, but it has never stopped her from raising such a loving and kind family.
My heart just hurts so much for my husband because he has already been through so much with my surgery and radiation treatments. Even though her health wasn't great, she was constantly asking about me and telling me to take care of myself. We just weren't ready for her to go so soon.
Just need to share.
