Went to a chicken place to get lunch today. This is how my ordering went. Me: 2 piece combo, all dark meat. Her: “blank look” All what? Me: All dark meat Her: What?? Me: Legs and thighs
You work in a chicken place and you don’t know what “dark meat” means?? SMH!

I always order which parts I want, as this has happened so many times.

The world is dumbing down. I see it all the time.

Meh. I’m 52, know I prefer dark meat, and can’t readily identify the parts that ARE dark meat. It’s just something I haven’t had to know, you know? If I was in the same circumstance the cashier and I would be googling (and giggling) together.

Was it a young kid? I could see that. I grew up poor, so we never went out to eat. We went to McDonald’s once a month. That was our treat. We also didn’t speak English at home. I likely didn’t learn white meat/dark meat until well into my 20’s. And I was a straight A student in all honor classes, so I take a little offense at someone saying this is a sign of the dumbing down of America.

I wouldn't call it dumbing down. More like poor training. If you work in a place like KFC, you should be taught which pieces are white and which ones are dark. That should be the first thing they teach you after food safety.

Lady in her late 40's to early 50's I would guess. Definitely not under 30.

Whilst I think that it's a bit strange that a woman in her 40s or 50s doesn't know what "dark meat" is, I also think it's a bit strange to actually ask for "dark meat" instead of just asking for a thigh or a drumstick, or a breast if you prefer white meat.

Since it is a combo, with more than one piece of chicken, it is quicker for my brain to think "all dark meat", instead of "leg and thigh". If I was ordering just one piece, I would specify the piece.

It occurred to me after I posted that you might not call them that, and you'd be saying WTH is she talking about?!

But on menus, unless it is a kid's menu, you would see "legs" more often. And, we have an ice cream that is sold in the grocery stores called "Drumsticks". I don't know why they are called that since it is basically just an ice cream cone.

So, I was curious and googled it. Apparently, what I call the "leg" is actually the "drumstick". The drumstick & thigh, still connected together, is the whole "leg". Interesting!
