Last night I fell asleep fine, but woke after an extremely upsetting nightmare. I find the best thing to do when this happens is to get out of bed and watch something bland and fluffy on my iPad before going back to sleep. Like a mental reset. I found something on Amazon Prime called āJourney of My Heartā which is a fluff piece about a young woman who has dreams of eagles flying above her and ends up being sent to Alaska to do a follow-up story of a sort of informal census written by a woman 50 years prior. She is being sent to do an updated article on the number of eagles in that same area.
Sounds like something with gorgeous scenery and a plot that wonāt be very deep. Perfect for after a nightmare. I got myself a cup of sleepy tea and sat down to watch the movie as far as I could until the tea kicked in and I could fall back to sleep. The characters are so lightweight that it was a little annoying, but I reminded myself this is just what I needed. A no-think movie. Then when she arrives in Alaska, she gets up in the morning and they show a shot of this gorgeous mountain view. This obviously supposed to be a scene from Alaska. The view they showed? Half Dome! WTF?
I donāt know if it is because I lived in California and that is my favorite place to go for a relaxing vacation, but I was insulted that they thought they could pass off something as obvious as Half Dome as being in Alaska! Donāt they have people that check these things out? I mean, ANY other shot of ANY other mountain or lake or stream would have been fine. Not something as recognizable as Half Dome for goodness sake! I was so irritated that I had to find something else to watch. Do those of you from elsewhere in the country know what Half Dome looks like?
It made me start thinking of all the stupid things Iāve seen in some otherwise decent movies. Like when a diabetic character starts shaking, sweating, and becoming confused and someone rushes in to give them an injection of insulin, without checking their blood sugar levels. They are showing signs of HYPOglycemia, not HYPERglycemia! Low blood sugar, not high blood sugar. Uh, they need orange juice or a candy, not insulin! Giving them insulin would further reduce their blood sugar level. You could have just killed them in real life.
Diabetes is a very common ailment and it would be so easy for the movie people to research the proper signs and treatment. And it would be a public benefit to get it right, possibly educating someone to do the right thing in real life if they are ever faced with the situation with someone they know. Even with the enormous amounts of money paid to actors, I would think they would have enough money left over to pay someone to fact check these things.
Thatās my rant for this morning. I guess Iām still irritated from last nightās Half Dome scene.

Lol. I think about this sort of thing all the time because I live in the DC area. The odd things that TV shows and movies do to DC is pretty funny. I've seen subway stops in Georgetown (there aren't any), and people who manage to drive from Quantico to DC in 10 minutes (nope, not possible), and NCIS loves to call I-95 or I-395 "the 95" or "the 395"... But that's a California thing to use "the" with main highways like that -- or maybe west coast? But around here it's just "95" or "395" with "south" or "north" added if precision is needed. As in "395 is backed up all the way from Quantico to DC" (no direction needed because everyone knows which direction it is from Quantico to DC) or "95 South is a parking lot coming into Fredericksburg." One of the worst was the TV show that mentioned "the Pentagon in Washington, DC". um... no. However... I do feel like misplacing an entire mountain is worse that my examples. Plus, how hard would it have been to find some shots of Alaskan mountains?

The one funny thing I remember is that a character was wearing a shirt I owned. The show was set back in the 80ās I think but filmed in the 2000ās. I bought the shirt in the 2000ās. And it was a not a āclassicā shirt that has been around forever. Think Anthropologie. Lol! It is not a blatant mistake, but it definitely caught my eye. I also see a lot of scenery that is passed as somewhere in the US, but is landscape of LA.

I've never heard of Half Dome let alone seen it, so I would have not noticed that though I'm sure other things would have stood out. They film a lot of things here in Georgia and sometimes it's kind of obvious that the movie set in PA is actually GA (that one was a Hugh Jackman movie and the first tell was that the roads were all smooth and in good repair, unlike the real PA). Don't get me started on medical shows and scenes in movies! I'll go to my grave making it my mission to let everyone know that ASYSTOLE IS NOT A SHOCKABLE RHYTHM. I mean, you can try, but at that point there is no electrical activity and they're not magically coming back to life like they show.

Iām not in the US, and even I recognise Half Dome. Among the things that annoy me in movies, are that horses are constantly whinnying. In real life, horses are very, very silent. Yes, they do make sounds occasionally, but nothing like what you see in movies. Everything viking age irritates me as well, those who make tv series or movies rarely get anything right.

Youāve made me think of the scene in Steel Magnolias when Shelbyās blood sugar dips too low. Yeah, insulin at that point would have finished the woman off.
I totally get distracted by mistakes in movies of TV shows like that.
Sorry about your nightmare.

If itās a true fluff piece, or some silly show like 911, 911 Lonestar (even worse), or Chicagoāsā¦ I donāt pay any attention to that stuff. Itās a distraction from real life. Now, if itās a medical show, I do expect them to be a little more careful about what they portray. We were watching Chicago Med last night, and there was a diagnosis that we thought was absolutely ridiculous, so we Googled it. Come to find out, it was a real thing, and her description of it was 100% correct.
Now, if I saw the Statue of Liberty on the beach in CA, Iād change the channel. LOL
ETA: No, Iāve never seen Half Dome, and have no idea what it looks like.

My pet peeve is the costumers who never seem to know what the weather actually is where the story is set and dress characters in what they think would be right.
The most rage inducing for me is the Blind Side where they are dropping Michael off at school and they are all wearing long sleeves and jackets. NO, NO, NO!!
Football players at Ole Miss report in late July/early August. It's Mississippi. So 90 to 100 degrees or more.
Sandra Bullock should be wearing a sleeveless linen sundress and Tim McGraw would be wearing the male uniform of khaki shorts, t-shirt, pastel shirt, topsiders with no socks.
The Good Witch is set up north but all of the characters loved to wear sleeveless tops outside in the fall.
It becomes distracting one you start to notice these things.

Yesss. Weird animal sounds bother me, like they just substitute one animal for another or make up a sound for an animal that is mostly silent. And anything set in Alaska is often filmed elsewhere and that bothers all of us Alaskans š. Iām enjoying Alaska Daily because many of the scenes are actually filmed here. Iāve been to most of them. Alaska reality shows are ridiculous and faked. (Life here is already unique and full of adventure yet they fake it.. bugs me)

Something only New Yorkers understand: when a character in a movie or TV show says they live "in Long Island" you know the writer never set foot ON Long Island.
And the other thing that drives me nuts is when they show a character in NYC who runs out of a building, holds up their hand and a cab comes and stops right in front of them. Yeah, right. That cab was right there waiting.

In the middle of a hardware store in Chicago haha. And I had to walk back home to our apartment looking like I'd peed my pants. Fun times.

Alaska reality shows are ridiculous and faked. (Life here is already unique and full of adventure yet they fake it.. bugs me) I donāt blame you for being bothered that some of these movie producers substitute other areas for Alaska. I loved Alaska Daily and appreciated that the scenery appears to be genuine as far as a nonAlaskan person could tell. I dislike the majority of reality shows, but I watched a couple of them set in Alaska specifically for the gorgeous scenery and interesting lifestyles that were so unlike anything Iāve ever been around. The one I enjoyed was Life Below Zero. Yeah, some of it is obviously fabricated for the show, but still, there was such gorgeous scenery and I liked the episodes with the Agnes Hailstoneās family and learning more about how things are made and done there. There are so many beautiful things to see there. Thatās why it bugged me that with all that gorgeousness in Alaska to choose from, they used a shot of Half Dome from the valley floor? It is such an iconic dome, and the only one in existence as far as I know. At least it wasnāt a good movie that I was really invested in so it was easy to just get irritated and switch to something else. Although I was looking forward to a movie with some beautiful and relaxing Alaska scenery. But when I woke this morning, I started thinking about it again and got irrationally irritated at the mistakes made that would be so easy for the movie people to fix.

I can relate only too well.
I began a mystery novel 2 days ago. Setting is Austin, Texas. Main character dives outside of Austin, has trouble and falls beside the road---and can feel the desert sand on her back. Agggg There is NO desert near Austin!
To add insult to the story, the book flap says the Author lives in Austin. Grrrr Did the publisher and her editor insist that a desert must be inserted into the story?
Whatever happened, I doubt I will read the book. I am so annoyed at this glaring mistake in the setting I will be watching for the next slip up and not focus on the story.

This is why it's very difficult to watch movies with my retired Marine DH. Guns are hardly ever used correctly, uniforms are rarely worn properly, salutes don't happen in that situation, etc. I don't notice or care, but he definitely does!

The two scenes/moves that first popped in my head were:
Goodfellas - in an early scene Henry and Tommy are waiting outside the Airline Diner by JFK but itās really near LaGuardia. The diner is still there and itās a Jackson Hole diner famous for giant burgersā¦DH and I went there for lunch last month.
One Fine Day - there is no way on earth Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney ran and cabbed all over manhattan on a rainy day like that.

Do those of you from elsewhere in the country know what Half Dome looks like? I do now I notice stuff like that in movies and TV shows too. I was watching an episodes of Good Girls, which I know was filmed in GA, because I've seen some of the filming locations when they were in town. In a particular episode, they girls were waiting at the Canadian border and in the background was Stone Mountain (a mountain that is basically a huge chunk of granite located near Atlanta). I guess it was supposed to be Canadian mountains. I felt the shot would have been better without trying to put a mountain in the backdrop. Do you ever notice on medical shows how much time the doctors and surgeons spend with the patients and even help them with their personal lives? When I've been in the hospital, I'm lucky if I see the doctor/surgeon for 2 minutes a day. Also...anytime a patient has a seizure, passes out, spits up blood or any other unexpected instance...they are happily chatting with the doctor just before it occurs and thank goodness the doctor is right there to attend to their needs. I have a friend that works in a lab at a hospital. She says she cannot stand on TV shows when the doctor goes to the lab to get the test results. She says she has NEVER, in her 20 years of lab work, seen a doctor come get the results and says the doctors have no idea where the lab even is.

They also had a ton of palm trees, when they really should have shown live oaks covered in moss. I took a friend to Florida once because she had never seen the ocean. We were in our late 20s. We went to the panhandle. Before we got to the beach and we were just driving in FL, she said "This doesn't look much different than GA" - I said, no...what did you expect? She said, I expected Palm Trees everywhere, but I mostly see pine and oak trees. I explained to her most of FL was pine and oak trees but there were some palms, mostly in southern FL. She only knew what she had seen on TV and expected palm trees to be everywhere!

I have been rewatching Frasier. I went to college in Seattle. The Space Needle is not downtown and would not be part of the view from his apartment. There is no border check between Oregon and Washington. I think they mentioned that twice. Border check is between Oregon and California.
