This is a non-serious difference with my SO that we’ve learned to live with. When I cut a pie, I cut the whole thing so that we don’t need to use a knife the next time we eat a piece. SO only cuts the number of slices that will be eaten at that time. He says it keeps the pie fresher. Just curious what do you do?

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had a pie in my kitchen.
We’ve eaten them at holiday meals, but those are at other family members’ houses.

I cut as we go, because not everyone wants the same size slice.
The size of piece depends on the type of pie each person wants.

I cut the pieces that will be eaten and store the knife with the pie.

I cut what will be eaten and the size of each piece may differ according to level of pie appeal and previous meal intake.

We cut each piece as it's being eaten, because as several people have already said not everyone wants the same size piece.

I cut one slice at a time, because that keeps the pie fresher, and I don’t care about getting more knives dirty.

Pies can be hit or miss with people, so we just cut what we'll need. Some people like a big slice and some people want a sliver. My husband gave me a pie cutter for Christmas one year (it was the joke of the night). However it is a great little utensil and it cuts well and makes pulling out the first piece so easy. I really don't like it when people cut desserts for me. I also think the precutting food that might last a few more days makes it go stale quicker since it is already cut and there is air on all of the sides. Weird, maybe, but I have noticed a difference.

I cut the whole pie... if someone wants a smaller piece they can halve it when they serve themselves...
Its usually just me n dh eating the last of it after we served it at family dinner...

I only cut what will be eaten at that time. I've never thought about why I do it that way, but I agree that it probably keeps it fresher. Otherwise the cut edges of each slice could dry out a bit, unless they're smooshed up together.
Plus, people want different sized slices. DSO would eat a Papa Bear sized slice, I would eat a Mama Bear sized slice, and someone like my MIL would eat a Baby Bear sized slice.

I think that makes sense. Same reason that ground beef doesn't keep as long as solid slabs--more surface area open to air (and bacteria).

I never thought about different size servings. For SO, and the boys if they are here, I cut them all the same size. No options for them. 😂 They can get another piece if they want more. Of course with guests, it is different, but immediate family … one size fits all. 😁

I don't eat pie but whenever I am somewhere that there is pie it is cut by the slice. I always assumed this was so the person could decide the size of the slice they wanted. If it's all pre-cut beforehand someone's going to end up with a piece too big or too small for their preference and will wind up cutting it with another knife anyway to get the portion they want.

All at once, with the Marie Callender's pie cutter. Then the slices are cut and can remain in the box or storage container, or on the serving platter.

I make pies for us a lot, and to sell occasionally. I cut as we go, as many prefer different size pieces. But also because the cut side dries out a bit and the texture of the filling changes. This post got me thinking I haven't seen my little gadget I use that pushes up against the cut edges of the pie. It swivels to expand as more of the pie is removed. I don't know where mine came from but Pampered Chef makes one called a pie gate. I just found a replacement on ebay. It also keeps the filling in each slice in case it is a little juicy.

I slice it down the middle, then cut the number of slices I need from just one side. Sometimes there are pieces left on the cut” side, sometimes not.

I've done both, cut it all or just what we needed.

I cut it all because it makes for easier storage for the pieces that aren't being eaten right away.

ETA: Pie doesn't last long in our house and leftovers are often eaten the next day so freshness is not a problem for us, lol.

I make a lot of pies all year round. We typically only cut what we will eat, especially with fruit pies that have a double crust. It just helps keep everything together if you leave it intact.

One at a time that way I or the person I am cutting for gets the slice size they would like.

It is just me and my husband. We just put a fork in it and pass it back and forth. The fork stays in the pie plate until we finish it. No cutting slices needed.😂

I cut as we go, because not everyone wants the same size slice. Same. I make pie fairly frequently.

We cut what we need. I don't think it would get eaten if it were precut at our house. I would probably pass.
