We were going to go out of town for a few days so I placed a hold on my mail, but we did not end up going out of town... I had ordered something not expecting it to ship (last day of a sale) and of course it did almost immediately, and arrived on April 1st via USPS but because of the mail hold they did not deliver it.
The tracking on the item says "Your item was returned to the sender on April 1, 2023 at 10:34 am because it could not be delivered as addressed."
Is that just a code for "you had a mail hold and we'll deliver it on April 6th" (when the mail hold ends) or did they really send it back?
Also, we have actually received mail (two items, so not a lot) while the mail was supposed to be being held which is kind of annoying and included a different package that DH forgot he ordered on the porch this morning...
So will my item show up tomorrow? What do you think? The tracking has not been updated.

No, that is not a usual note for me to get for held mail. But I hope they will deliver it to you tomorrow. If it had actually went back, I would think the tracking would show it moving back through the system.

Call the postmaster tomorrow morning and ask them the status. I would think it was returned, but you won't know until you call the post office.

I've had my status say it was returned, but then the package showed up after a few days.

It sounds to me that there may have been a problem and it was actually returned to sender, but of course not sure...that is just how I read it. I guess you will find out later today

USPS is the worst when dealing with mail. We snowbird so have our mail forwarded until the last two weeks and then we do a mail hold.
Some of our mail was forwarded, I know not all of it because, well, I use the informed delivery service they provide. That, in and of itself, is a joke, because they don't scan everything. So there may be stuff I don't even know i didn't get. We even got mail forwarded to us that wasn't even addressed to us which means someone else didn't get their bank statements. PSA: one more reason you should stop getting paper statements.
For the mail hold, when we got home, our mailbox was stuffed to overflowing. And then they delivered the rest of the mail 2 days later, along with several pieces that were not addressed to us. Two small packages were delivered separately the same day.
We have no idea how to avoid this in future short of having our neighbors collect our mail

I am wondering.......if there was a hold on your mail, why didn't the Post Office hold your package as well? Anything being delivered to your address via the postal service should be considered mail, and all mail should have been held until the the date the mail hold was released, then all of it delivered to you.

Call the postmaster tomorrow morning and ask them the status. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I literally spit my coffee out reading this. The idiots at my local post office don’t answer the phone. And if you go in person to get answers they’d tell you some bullshit story if how it’s not there and not their fault.

Sounds like the message I get for address issues. Call the 800 number- it takes a while to push all the right buttons but you will either get a human or a call back. They can see what the issue is and pass on a service ticket to the local post office. The local office will call you and help solve the problem. I've done this just 2 weeks ago and also earlier this year.

I don't know the answer to your question about the package, but I hope it comes tomorrow! As for that theoretical "mail hold" thing... we've given up on it here in my neighborhood. We all just ask a friend or neighbor to bring in our mail. One of my neighbors used to try to use it because she seemed to think it was an imposition to ask me (*directly* across the street ) to pick it up for her. But every time they'd ask for their mail to be held I'd find it on their porch. Not every day but randomly. And once when it had started to rain I went out to my driveway to be sure I'd put the windows up on our van and I noticed mail just flung onto her very-small porch. Not even put into the mail box where it would have had a chance of staying dry. Nope, just flung down where it had already started to get wet. So, no more mail holds, now I just pick up their mail. I finally convinced her that it was not an inconvenience for me to walk aaaaalllllll the way across the street. haha

OP - I hope you get your package today, or at least some answers. We've never received such a notice when our mail has been on hold. For the mail hold, when we got home, our mailbox was stuffed to overflowing. And then they delivered the rest of the mail 2 days later, along with several pieces that were not addressed to us. Two small packages were delivered separately the same day. We have no idea how to avoid this in future short of having our neighbors collect our mail If you are going to be gone a long time, and expect a lot of mail when you get home, you can pick up your mail at the post office when you get back. We do that when we are gone for more than two weeks. I've seem other people bring into the post office an empty box and leave with it full of mail.

We have no idea how to avoid this in future short of having our neighbors collect our mail Yes, this is how to avoid the problem in the future. Unless you live in an unfriendly neighborhood. In mine, we're all happy to look out for each other. In fact many of us first met when we were redelivering mail that was left at our house since the mail carriers clearly can't read.

Call the postmaster tomorrow morning and ask them the status. I would think it was returned, but you won't know until you call the post office. ahem... sorry. I know you meant well with your suggestion. But where I live -- Northern Virginia, just across the river from Washington, DC -- we would fall over in shock if anyone ever actually answered the phone at our post office. We've now resorted to calling our representative's office, but only for really egregious issues. He's a good guy and always gets us at least a reply from some USPS official, who of course promises to do better. hahahahahahahahaha (when I say "we" and "us" I mean my town, not just my neighborhood).

I was on a mission to get the USPS to stop claiming my Amazon packages were delivered when they weren't, so they could claim on time delivery. I called and called and called. Finally I realized I was just frustrating myself - they DO NOT CARE. Although I did rack up a ton of Amazon gift cards calling them instead every time the package was late.

Yeah, good luck trying to get ahold of anyone on the phone at the local PO. I don’t even think the carriers know what number to call. Case in point, I had about five partial boxes of Priority Mail boxes that I had in my basement from when I was shipping out tons of packages monthly for my business that I wanted to return because I no longer need them. I happened to be out at the mailbox one day to get the mail when I saw our carrier pulling up a couple doors down so I just waited for her and asked her about returning the boxes. She said she *thought* they would take them back, and then said, “Maybe you could call…” and she noticed my quizzical expression, LOL. Then she looked on one of the delivery slips to see if there was a phone number on it, NOPE. She basically did this: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and I said it wouldn’t be a problem for me to just stop in and ask directly. Thankfully they did take the boxes back because I really didn’t want to toss perfectly good unused boxes in the recycling bin.

It may have been sent back to the company you ordered it from.
I had a package get sent to my boss's address instead of to our office. Boss had had his mail forwarded to our office. I figured the package would also get forwarded, but nope- it was returned to the sender. I had to call the place I ordered it from once they'd received it back and have them resend it.

We were snowbirds for a couple of years. It sounds like your package was returned to the sender. When I've had mail held, packages were held as well.
PSA - If you submit a mail hold and do not need it, you can cancel it. You don't need to wait for it to expire. The Post Office will only hold mail for 30 days; you can either have the accumulated mail delivered or pick it up.

UPDATE: my package with no tracking info updates for 10 days arrived today...
I hadn't contacted the post office yet to complain, so who knows where it was, but it did not actually get returned to sender.

We live in a small town, so must be different here but we have no issues calling or going in early to get our mail and cancel the hold. Do you know you can sign up for informed delivery, and get an email each morning showing scans of your mail that will be delivered that day? It's free too. Only once did we not have something show up that was shown on informed delivery, and I clicked "did not receive", which started tracking on it and it showed up 2 days later. Also helpful if you are having a neighbor collect the mail for you, so you can contact them to make sure a check (or whatever shows as would be delivered that day) actually showed up.
