We have a family friend who is close to our heart but is very private. He's been having severe back pain, and I found out that he was hospitalized yesterday. They found a tumor in his lungs, 6 in his brain, and 4 in or on his spinal cord. I've been searching for any possibilities other than cancer, but I really can't find anything. I think in all probability, he has a stage 4 lung cancer. He is 44 or 45, has two young kids, and a wife who was already severely depressed and not very functional. I'm not really sure why I'm posting - I guess I'm just hoping against hope that maybe somebody here has some experience that can put my mind at ease for now. And I need to kind of let my worry and sadness out somewhere - many of the people I know also know him, and he's not wanting any of this information spread right now. However, if you're a praying person, I know he would appreciate it. His name is Mike.
UPDATE 12/11 - It's been officially diagnosed as Stage 4 metastatic melanoma. He began treatment today. Sadly, his prognosis is 4-12 months WITH the treatment. I haven't told my kids yet - he is our friend as well as our tae kwon do instructor, and he has really helped them a lot. They are going to be a mess. Thanks for the prayers, and if you are so inclined, continued prayers for him and his family are welcomed.

No, it doesn't sound good, but it doesn't hurt to hope for the best. I'm so sorry and hope things turn out well for him and his family.

Prayers for your friend and his family. I'm currently praying for my husband's sister who also has stage 4 lung cancer which has spread into her liver, rib cage and one femur. Cancer sucks.  |

How awful. I know so many who are battling this horrible disease.
He will be in my prayers, as well as his wife and children. I hope they will be able to get the support that they will need in the months to come.

Headaches and sore backs are common at this time of the year? Stress at work and not sleeping well? Maybe he has the flu and a bad chest infection? I wish I had better ideas. This is awful news for any family to go through. I am so sorry He is in my prayers. |

Thank you all sincerely, and I know he would feel the same. They've just had so many kicks in the head lately, so to speak, and he is such an alive, active person that this is so hard to even envision. I know he will remain optimistic and prayerful, and I will do all that I can to help him and his family. Miracles can happen, and I can hope and pray that it's his turn for one. It just really, well, sucks. Prayers for your sister-in-law, Sue, and for all others dealing with this horrible thief of cancer.

We just went through this with my dear friend Mary. We (and she) were lucky because her struggle was not long. I'm sorry to not have hope to give you and your friend. But I do have prayers.

i'm so sorry to hear this...and yes, it is most likely cancer. after 20 plus years working in medicine, i feel pretty confident that you're correct. so, so sad.

The wife of my work buddy got essentially the same news yesterday. They have a four year old. Fuck cancer. Just FUCK IT!! Prayers to your friend and his family. |

I think you are correct about it being lung cancer. A dear friend's mother went to the Dr about back pain and had almost the same situation as your friend. Her diagnosis was metastatic cancer originating in the lungs.
