Looking for some board game suggestions for teen boys, all over 16. Stragety type games that take a while to play. I am looking at Settlers of Catan, but want to give DS a couple choices if it means I make a run to buy a new game.
They like to hangout and generally just do video games. I would like them to do something that involves more interaction and talking. These are not the most outgoing boys, but they are all good kids and get along great.
TIA

Well, it's not much on strategy, but the hot game in DS' circle is Cards Against Humanity. He is a hs junior.

This isn't a strategy game, per se, but it involves talking... Wits and Wagers.

I have been playing Talisman with my nephews and they love it.
I guess I am a prude, because I wouldn't buy Cards against humanity for a teenager!

My dd is a freshman in college, and their group, generally 18-19 yrs old play cards of Humanity a lot. What about one of the Dungeons and dragons games? see my prev thread for my dd. ha

Cards Against Humanity is extremely raunchy. I wouldn't provide it for my teen.
I think Catan is a great choice.

Pandemic, Forbidden Island (both cooperative games) King of Tokyo, Munchkin, Ticket to Ride, Discworld (if you can find it.) All pretty high strategy games and a lot of fun. My teens love playing them with us.

Yes, Cards Against Humanity is raunchy. I do love it though. We have played it as a family and my senior taught us all of the history references and I taught him all of the sexual ones. I have always been open with my boys about asking me any kind of question they had (and boy have they ever asked away).

I understand not providing CAH for your teens, however, I bet they play it.

I just got Qwirkle and The Game of Things for our kids. I think teenagers would like both.

We got Pandemic for DSS last year for Christmas. We have played it several times as a family and it is fun. It is a real great teamwork kind of game. He plays it with his friends all the time. I am also going to state the obvious with Risk.

I understand not providing CAH for your teens, however, I bet they play it. Undoubtedly. But I'm not of the mindset that just because a teen is going to drink alcohol, that means I should go ahead and provide it. Same applies here IMO.

My son's entire peer group plays D&D and they love it. The 5th edition Dungeon Master guide just came out.

TIA My son has been away at college, and they have been playing Settlers of Catan so much that he asked for it for Christmas. I was pretty surprised as the last time he played a board game was probably elementary school. I would say it's a good choice if my son who only likes video games likes it.

Thanks everyone. I will check these out and let DS see what he thinks. I really would like something different fo rhim and his friends to do, especially if they can all play it together.
Keep the ideas coming.

For strategy games that take a while to play I would suggest Caverna: The cave farmers, Terra Mystica or Power Grid. All top games on Boardgamegeek, and solid games that goes over well with most people.

I LOVE board games, love them! Your mileage may vary but I really love a game called Arkham Horror (if they or you aren't okay with some PG-13ish allusions to monsters etc then pass) but it is GREAT fun with a group, and it is actually a co-operative game the group tries to beat the game. It also has tonnes of expansions if you like it you can get one of those and make the game new again!
Robo Rally is a lot of fun, goofy and lighthearted. Great with more than three players.
Dungeon Petz is hugely fun and funny. I think this would be a huge hit with teens. You are a goblin and you and your clan raise monsters for fun and profit! Super cute bits and board art.
If they have specific interests like sci-fi, steampunk, monsters, Lord of the Rings etc I could perhaps offer even more options for you.
Boardgamegeek mentioned above is an excellent resource for looking up games.

I have a few suggestions but it depends a bit on how many players, how long a game you are looking for and how serious you are about strategy. With that I can tailor a bit more. Here's some suggestions that could work well though:
Eldritch Horror - co-op game 1-5 players, takes about 3 hours, horror adventure, simpler than arkham horror. One of my top faves.
Galaxy trucker, 2-5 players, 1 hour. Fun to 'build' your spaceship then race around the board game and get it smashed up. Good choice for teenagers I think.
In a similar vein, space cadets or space cadets dice duel. Running a space ship. Either 3-5 players or 4 player for the dice version.
Space cadets and Galaxy trucker emphasis on the fun and slightly madcap. Strategy is light.
I haven't played it yet but king of New York is a fun dice chucking game with a King Kong monster theme. Very minimal strategy. Plays under an hour.
Slightly heavier games:
Caverna is good if they are feeling more introverted and want to play game of farming (which is better than it sounds!). I like it but wouldn't automatically think Caverna and teen boys in the same breath.
Arcadia quest - 2-6 players. It's a big game with lots of pieces and miniatures. Big rule book so takes some time to learn (all the deeper strategy games do) but it's a super fun dungeon crawl but with fun characters rather than scary that takes under 2 hours to play. You can also do campaigns.
If they like dungeon crawls and want a deeper game Descent 2 or level 7: omega protocol are great and can be played with as little as 2 players. Descent is monsters/demons and level7 is aliens. It's a one against many so 1 person plays the bad guy and everyone else plays the humans.
Smash up or marvel dice masters are both reasonably priced games that don't take up a lot of room and are really fun to play. 2 players and up. Dice masters is 30 minutes but will want play over and over. Smash up is under an hour. Dice masters is comic book themed and smash up is a mash of different types ie you could be a ninja wizard or a vampire troll.
Dead of winter is a semi cooperative game (there's a betrayer) about a post apocalyptic world with zombies. Different scenarios so 30 mins to 2 hours.
Pandemic is an hour long solid cooperative game about saving the world from deadly plagues.
Honestly I could go on and on but I'll stop there. I'm a bit of a board game geek.

Settlers is the best game EVER. With the expansion packs it really is an infinitely replayable game.
We got 7 Wonders last Christmas and love it. I think it is up to seven players.
Highly recommend the YouTube series Table Top Games. It gives you a good idea what the games are about. And Will Wheaton is the host. Love him.

I was also going to suggest Risk. I know I'm old LOL but I remember my friends in HS playing it constantly. I know these are not quite along the same lines, but I have played these types of games as a college student well into adulthood and just laugh our a$$es off... what about Taboo, or even Headbanz? Headbanz especially is goofy and might seem young, but each age group seems to be able to apply their own humor to these kinds of games.
