Have you ever eaten Baked Alaska?
Anyone here ever created the dessert?

Yes and yes!
It has been about 30 years but a friend and I made it for dinner for our parents once.
Sadly we used brownies for the base, and because you need to freeze it well after forming it before you add the meringue, the brownies were impossible to cut through lol.
So my advice is to use some type of sponge cake under your ice cream so it has some give when frozen.
And ignore Martha’s “pipe the meringue in pretty little stars” idea - that will take forever, there will be holes, and your ice cream will soften. Spread it with an off-set spatula and make sure the meringue is sealed around the cake and no ice cream shows.
Really great textures and flavour mix with the to baked browned meringue!

I haven't done either, but I plan to make at all the time and either run out of time or ingredients! It's been at least 15 years I have been planning on making one. Mainly, I just like torching things, I think that's the appeal. Eta: great advice cakediva. I definitely would have used brownies if I ever got around to making baked Alaska. I will use a sponge cake. Eventually.

I’ve had it at a banquet dinner back in the 80’s. I’ve never made it. Not my cup of tea.

I did waaaaaaay back in Jr High Home Ecconomics class, however, we did it in a regular pie crust shell. Made the pie crust, baked it to golden brown, let cool, filled pie shell with soften icecream, put in freezer while we made the meringue. Took pie from freezer, coated ice cream with a huge mound of meringe and popped in oven under the broiler for a few minutes.

Yes it was a thing in the 80s...I've had it quite a few times on special occasions, restaurants etc.

I don't think I've ever eaten it, and I definitely haven't made it. I'm sure I would like it, but it's not something that jumps out at me and screams "EAT ME!" Lemon meringue pie, on the other hand......

I don't even know what it is though of course I've heard of it. It sounds like the 1960s to me, like it would be in full color in a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and the hostess is serving it in a peach minidress with bouffant hair. Or Doris Day just ordered it and Tony Randall landed face first in it when it arrived to the table.

I had it a few times back when it was a popular showy dessert in the 80s. The most memorable was on a cruise when they dimmed the lights in the grand dining room and did a parade of “flaming” baked alaskas. I’m not an ice cream lover so it’s really never been a favorite for me.
I did make it once but I remember us being vaguely disappointed in it. It’s really a lot of hype for a not very good dessert in my opinion.

I've had it a couple of times in restaurants and it's delicious! However it's been years and I wouldn't to bother with making it at home.

I at it on a cruise once, and the presentation was impressive. And it tasted great, too!
I have never attempted to make it, though.

I’ve had it, and helped make it. I don’t really care for it — the cake is too frozen, the ice cream too melty, and I don’t really like meringue. I only made it because it was our team’s assigned contribution to a sports dinner. I’d much rather have cake and ice cream without the meringue and at the right temperatures.

My mom used to make it for guests in the 70s. I did it once many years ago and it was a little fussy to make but tasty. It's mostly for show.

Many years ago I made one in my 11th grade Home Ec Cooking class. If I recall correctly, we used a chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. There were quite a few groups in class and I remember a couple did not put the meringue on correctly and theirs were melted messes when they came out of the oven.

Yes, eaten it and made it. I cheat and use a shop bought sponge flan case which is pretty sturdy so holds up well.

I’ve had it for dessert on a cruise ship too. Parade of baked Alaska! 😄
I was surprised to see it on the menu at the Nomad Library in Vegas last year. We ordered it and it was pretty good. Various flavours of sherbet.

Yes I’ve also had it on a cruise ship! It was good, but not something I’d make at home.
