Having lived along the gulf coast my entire life, this is a new one for me. DS's friend has invited him to be her date for her sorority Spring formal at Tulane, and the dress code is Cape Cod/East Cost vibe. Although the event says "formal", it is not a black tie event. So, any ideas as to what he would wear? I have no clue!

Maybe preppy? I live on the east coast and I have NO CLUE! That is really strange.

i would assume that means top siders, chinos, sweater vests over a button down shirt - ralph lauren, tommy hilfiger. but i am old so....

Seersucker? 😂😂 Probably some sort of khaki pants, button down and a sweater or vest.
But really, if he shows up in a dress shirt and tie with Dockers, are they gonna kick him out?

I instantly thought Tommy Bahama. I would also say that Charleston style is very similar to Hampton's style.

I am midwestern and not in the know, but if it is "formal" but not black tie, I would think a blazer--maybe navy/tan with a linen button down (think beach wedding) or with a tie and more formal button down depending on what the ladies are wearing.

Definitely leans toward a preppy vibe. I agree that a blazer, pants, shirt, no socks. If he is on the fence about how formal, then wear a tie. If it's too much he can always take it off and put it in his blazer pocket.
My suggestion is that you go by Syd Mashburn and talk with them. Their whole look fits in this category and they may well know exactly what is meant by Cape Cod/East Coast vibe that's formal.

My guess is that this is "a formal" (ie date paty) the dress code is not "formal". So it must be a themed date party.

Yes, my mind went to the Charleston kind of image (though I am well aware that isn't Cape Cod!). Seersucker, navy blazers with khakis and an oxford shirt with the top button unbuttoned, bow ties - the look I think of as "genteel Southern." Though since they're in NOLA, I would think that look is not uncommon amongst a certain group, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't have called it something like that. Maybe all the terms they could think of evoked Col. Sanders or plantations?

Google Kentucky Derby outfits for men. I'm pretty sure this is exactly what he needs. Does he know if this is the dress every year or just this year? If it is every year, there are probably pictures on social media posts from last year. Also, there are always going to be the people who really lean into the theme and others who want to blend in, so he can take it to the extreme (wild patterns or full seersucker suit) or he can keep it simple (a pastel jacket, light or bright shirt, fun tie).

He's on a first name basis with the guys there.

It definitely means preppy with khakis, a (navy) blazer, etc.

Colored chinos. Especially a shade of salmon.
Look at Vineyard Vines for inspiration.

For a guy, navy jacket, white or cream or beige khaki pants, or red or salmon. Oxford henley shirt in white or light blue, navy tie or red tie.
Lots of red, white and blue in any variation. Loafers.

We used to live in Boston. It’s a navy blazer, khaki style pants, a button down shirt, tie, and an Oxford style shoe. Docksiders will also work and the shoes can be the sneaker style Oxford that is popular now. Think Vineyard Vines style.
Every guy in the area wears this to any sort of casual dressy event. This time of year, I think there will be lots of red/salmon colored pants, maybe some embroidered prints with lobsters or sailboats, and fun prints for the shirts.

Agree with everyone else, it’s preppy. When I was younger it meant dressing out of the Lands End catalog. Think oxfords, seersucker, chinos, docksiders or penny loafers, navy blazers.

Yeah, you're talking my language: basic would be navy jacket, khaki pants, white or blue oxford, no socks, Sperry shoes or loafers. More fun would be the same blue jacket, plaid/Nantucket red/any bright color pants with the same white or blue shirt; or khakis with a plaid button down shirt; same Sperry shoes or loafers.

I think he should call his date and see what she has in mind. It could be that Cape Cod/East Coast vibe is just a way of saying “dressy casual.” However, it could also be that it is a theme party and everyone is expected to wear over the top preppy clothes.
I hope your son has fun!
