Texas senate approves a bill that will require the Ten Commandments posted in every classroom by the next school year. This is for both public and private schools, K-12. Time can also be set aside to read/study the Bible. www.yahoo.com/news/texas-senate-approves-bills-requiring-053832316.htmlIf it passes, I am sure there will be a lawsuit against this. And the bible from which denomination gets to be read in school?

I hope there is a huge lawsuit. I think I'll make a donation to the ACLU.

Religion has always been in Texas schools. I went to public high school in Texas in the late 90s and early 2000s.
We had prayers at every school activity and if you refused to participate in the prayer, you couldn’t participate in the activity. Our physics teacher refused to teach the Big Bang. We celebrated Christmas at school and had In God We Trust signs. Every school board meeting starts with a prayer, teachers have to go to Convocation in a church and listen to a preacher at the beginning of the school year, graduation included prayer.
A lawsuit won’t help. My school completely ignored all the decisions about prayer, they’re not going to listen to a decision about this.

Damn, I am glad I live in Minnesota. (That doesn't mean I don't care what happens in other states)

My brother lives in Texas and thinks the public schools are crap. I know that is a blanket statement for a whole state, but this bill doesn't help the opinion.

Every time I visit here I realise how lucky I am to live in CANADA!!! I know we have loads of issues as well but nothing like the craziness I read about with our US neighbours.

It’s unlikely to pass the house. Just performative legislation for the far right base.

Carry on, carry on! I understand that it must be frustrating to see your state called out all the time. To be fair, I have seen threads about the nonsense going on in Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Florida etc in the last week or so, as well. But unfortunately, there seems to be more crap coming out of Texas right now.

Living here in Texas, we really don’t have all the issues that get pointed out. It really is the same as living everywhere else. There really is politics of some sort going on everywhere at any given time.

As I said, it’s unlikely to pass, but I find it hilarious that the same people who get offended if you read a book with two dads now want us explaining to six year olds what adultery is.

Wonder what teachers will tell the kids? Will they explain 'graven images'? Worshipping the 'golden images'? Adultery? Thou shall not kill? Of course it's ok to kill with a gun! Honesty?

Ugh. Shoving religion down everyone’s throat. I hope that this goes to court if it becomes law. If people want to pray, go to church, etc; it should be on their own time.

I hope there is a huge lawsuit. I think I'll make a donation to the ACLU. Same. I have lived in Arkansas my entire life. Went to public school. Prayers in school was a thing. Band director would always lead a prayer before halftime show. Every one. Head football coaches would preach and lead a prayer after every game. It might not have been publicly encouraged, but it sure as hell wasn't publicly discouraged either. It made me uncomfortable, though a defining moment of my 10th grade year happened during a prayer huddle after a football game. If this passes I too will be making a donation to the ACLU.

Carry on, carry on! I don't think Texas is crap. I think it's the size of the Texas population that makes news gravitate to it. Same reason we hear so much about CA, NYS, etc.

Living here in Texas, we really don’t have all the issues that get pointed out. It really is the same as living everywhere else. There really is politics of some sort going on everywhere at any given time. It might seem “normal” or like anywhere else right now. But we can’t normalize what is happening in Texas and other red states in regards to human rights, democracy, and so much more. What they are doing is infiltrating every aspect of society. You might not recognize that now, but we all certainly will if this continues. And of course there is politics going on everywhere. In Florida, they are proposing taking away kids who are trying to get gender affirming care, ad well as their siblings. In my state today legislation was passed that protects people who come here for gender affirming cafe. Our legislature is working to ensure people’s rights-not just those who live here. And trying to combat all of the crazy that is happening elsewhere, along with making lives better here in Minnesota. I am so thankful that our governor, house and senate are all led by democrats right now.

I guarantee the teachers will not be able to explain any of it, because it'll be just like Florida where Rosa Parks now took a seat because some people didn't agree on things.

Carry on, carry on! Oh no, not at all. I live in Ohio, and we have a bunch of batshit crazies in the legislature. I think we hear about Texas because Abbott and Patrick are vocal. My governor is waaaay too Republican, but he is much lower key.

I feel sorry for the elementary teachers who have to explain ‘Though shalt not covet thy neighbors wife’ without breaking their other rules about not talking about sex.

I feel your pain, Texans. Here in Arkansas, we have Sarah Huckabee Sanders as Governor. One of her first moves as the newly elected Gov. was to ban the use of the word “Latinex.” It’s gone waaaaaay downhill from there. I am starting to experience trump-like stress and anxiety every time I see one of her tweets. I know I need to stop reading, but I want to be informed. Hello hell, my hand basket is heading your way….

I feel like I can't ignore stuff because that's how they'll get away with things, when the rest of us aren't paying attention. But on the other hand it sure does raise our stress levels to read it all.

Whatever happened to freedom of religion - as in my right to choose? Oh, yeah, Constitutional stuff isn't Constitutional any more.

Living here in Texas, we really don’t have all the issues that get pointed out. So you’re saying all the reports of racist, transphobic, homophobic, misogynistic actions by the state/local government in Texas is “fake”. The fact that you actually typed that sentence is so deeply disturbing. Ma’am you need deprogramming stat.

Of course Constitutional stuff is Constitutional. *IF* it agrees with what the Republicans/evangelicals want. If it doesn't... well you don't have the right to choose. Unless of course you choose Christianity (in the case of religion in school).
