Patter & jeremysgirl - I fell down the pattern rabbit hole with that afghan thread and then yesterday I was in Michaels and looking at the yarn Patter suggested - so many pretty options! But here’s my question - with the patterns like whatchamacallit or thingiemabob - the colour divisions seem pretty definite in her photos - and the yarn is multi coloured - how does that work with the pattern? Or do you just use the yarn and let the colours fall where they fall? (the photos from that thread have disappeared so I couldn’t see your versions any more lol) thanks!

Also cakediva, there is a Facebook group specifically for Hooked on Sunshine Patterns. If you can join, join. You can see how people used various yarns, self-striping, variegated, solids, etc. It will give you a better idea of what you want to do. Plus, there is endless color combinations. Lots of eye-candy.

I also want to show you a Helen Shrimpton pattern. You can search Ravelry by her name. Her patterns are very similar to Hooked on Sunshine and while I don't do videos so I have no idea about those, the instructions for Helen's are very good, as well. This one is Beltane Blessings.

Sorry - I get going and don't make myself clear! LOL I was wondering how it worked with the multicolour yarn, I knew it changed itself but I couldn't see Patter photo anymore and she said she used the multicolour so I wondered how it went with patterns such as these. But I love that you changed all the colours yourself (not something I know how to do just yet lol) I'm still part way through my Annie's Kit Club - squares are getting more intricate with the stitches (currently doing a long crossover that seems weird when you do it but looks lovely) so once I have this finished I want to try a pattern that isn't from a kit club but that does have help videos. And I'll check out Helen Shrimpton too - thanks!

Hi cakediva! Yes, I use the multicolor yarns but I also put in my own solid colors. I switch when I want. The only time I DO change is when her instructions recommend that you do for a neater finish. For instance, in Whatchamacallit, I AM fastening off at the ends of Round 8 and 14. That's it. Otherwise, I just go as I want. This Whatchamacallit is in the same colors I did last time but I am controlling it more. Someone wanted to commission me to do this but I don't take commissions. She is struggling in life so this will be a gift (she doesn't know it). Can't wait to finish and surprise her! Here it is after last night's crochet session.

I was just drooling over those Cotton Cake selections - there was a sale - and I walked away because I had no idea how many I would need or even had a pattern for it yet LOL

And oh dear jeremysgirl --do I really need to look at Helen Shrimpton? Oh my! Looks so pretty! Yes, you absolutely do need to check out her makes. cakediva, I totally understand now what you are wanting to do. Again, I encourage you to join that Facebook group so you can see how others have done it. I have to say that I prefer a multi-colored blanket and part of the fun of a project is selecting the colors for me, however, even the solid ones come out gorgeous with these patterns. The texture of them makes for a stunning blanket, no matter what!

I am currently on block 19 of 30 for my kit club sampler, and each block is a new stitch. So once it is done and pieced together, I'll be attempting a Hooked on Sunshine for sure!

Oh you will love doing a HOS pattern cakediva! They are so wonderful, and you truly will be "hooked" (no pun intended) once you complete one. And glad you submitted a request to join the FB group. It is AMAZING. I submitted a request to join the Helen Shrimpton FB page. Oh boy, I am in trouble jeremysgirl . LOL!

I am butting in on this thread to say what lovely work jeremysgirl and Patter!! The colors in your crochet Patter are so soothing and lovely to look at. I do not really have skills with crocheting. I can do it but I don't know all the different patterns and stitches. That is what Youtube is for! However, I may have to look that pattern up and find that yarn. jeremysgirl just wow!! Those color combos! This really makes me want to pull my hooks out.

With a yarn sale AND an additional code I now have yarn and a new hook coming my way. As I don't remember the size hooks I have at home, I just threw another in the cart to order. Want to take advantage of the sale you know! Now to go grab that blanket pattern.

If I have any hesitation I watch the video and stitch along until I'm comfortable to continue the square on my own.

Yah naby64!!! We are always glad to enable/inspire as jeremysgirl said. Supposedly Briar Rose is one of the easiest to begin with but I began with Doo-Dad. I think Whatchamacallit might be a bit simpler than Doo-Dad.

Hmmm... after reading this thread it might be time to crochet again for a bit. I can't papercraft right now because things are a mess in my area(waiting for my she-shed to be finished) but I can stitch while I'm watching tv in the evenings... hehe

Soooooo, can any of you crochet people tell me WHY the 4mm is the impossible hook to find.? I had to run to the Rock last night for a work Costco run and Michaels is nearby, sort of. Well, I decided to hit them up and buy the 3 rolls of cotton cake beachglass they had. And get a hook. I probably have a 4mm at home but felt like poop and couldn't muster the thought to look for them. So I'll have an extra if and when I look. I found one at Ms but I gotta tell ya, it was HARD. Every size around it but not that one. I am ready to hit up Temu and Amazon and check all their hooks out.
I'll tell you another secret...Fridays are my half work days and no one else is around. I just remembered my bag from Ms is in the back of my car. I may just be tiptoeing out there soon and grab it. I have my pattern printed and might just need to get started.

Plus I see her trying to attack the yarn wherever it may be.

The 4mm hook is easily, hands down, my most used one. I use Addi Swing Hooks. I'm a total hook snob and these hooks feel just right in my hand. They are not for everybody, though. I have heard if you use the pencil hold, they are impossible to use, but I use the knife hold. Anyway, all that to say, I have three in this size because I use it constantly. So it doesn't surprise me you'd have a hard time finding it.

But with the yarn you bought naby64, I actually use a 5.0 Addie Swing not a 4.0. I actually use my 5.0 mm the most.

I googled and found a Yarnspirations video that showed both styles - but at the end she shows how she does it with a variation - which is what I do. Most of my fingers are around the hook but my first finger is stretched out and rests closer to the hook and guides the hook through all the stitches....

Oh my good golly gosh!! I am just starting my Whatchamallit and I'm stuck on Round 2. What the heck is a bphdc? And they want you to do a standing bphdc!?! 15 of them in 15 stitches but it looks like you are using 2 stitches for each one. I'm speaking gibberish and my ODS is laughing at me. But I will conquer this.

Post by jeremysgirl on May 7, 2023 1:01:15 GMT
A bphdc means back post half double crochet. In essence you are stitching around the stitch below it by inserting your hook behind the stitch below it. Instead of sticking your hook in the loop on top.
