We're getting quite a bit of our house interior painted and we need to make decisions about the paint. We've definitely decided on Sherwin Williams Duration, but I'm hoping to get input on what sheen to use. We'll use satin/eggshell (apparently the same thing at SW) in the kitchen, but I don't know what to do about the living room, hallways, and bedroom. I much prefer the look of matte, but our painter and the person at Sherwin Williams both said that most people prefer satin throughout their homes. That kind of surprised me, so I thought I'd check in here.
I know that satin is supposed to be easier to clean, and I do appreciate that in the kitchen with spaghetti sauce splashes, etc. But I'm thinking that scuff marks in hallways, etc. probably won't come off no matter the finish.
I hate paint decisions! Help me out here, please?

Definitely an eggshell/satin finish ... matte shows every mark and is impossible to clean ...

I think we are eggshell everywhere but in the kitchen/bathrooms we are a more glossy finish.

Eggshell. I hate matte, the look, and feel. I also think eggshell washes/wipes down better when cleaning.

Satin. I did matte in my dining room because my mom went on and on about how it would make the room look bigger etc, and just repainted it a different color and in satin (which the rest of the house is in.) It was hard to wash off smudges, and it looked dull.

Matte or flat is the best for hiding imperfections in your walls.

I used whatever is one step up from matte the last time and I love it. So much more forgiving.

We have pups that sometimes rub against the walls. We use satin or matte. Those walls have beens scrubbed dozens of times and still hold up.

I hate shiny walls. I just bought paint from Sherwin Williams and I will have to go dig up the can too,see what the finish is called. It isn’t totally flat, but it isn’t shiny either. When I told the lady that I hate shine but understand that the old fashioned flat paint won’t work for cabinets and kitchen/bathrooms she recommended this.
Whatever it is, it seems less shiny than whatever the finish is for the samples of paint that you can buy for $10. I will go check in a bit and come back to post it. (I just got back from doing an all-day grocery and errand run and I am wiped out and need to sit for a bit)
** I checked the paint can. It is matte. And the samples are satin. I absolutely prefer the matte. What I bought is washable. The previous owner used something that is shinier than satin and I hate it. Wel, I would have had to repaint anyway because of her color choices.

Satin. I’ve had great luck pulling off scuffs with a Mr Clean eraser. We had matte in the house where the kids were toddlers. It was impossible to clean and I had to repaint a lot of the walls when we moved.
Buy some poster board and some paint samples. Paint the poster board and put it up to get a feel for the sheen. That should help you decide.

I hate shiny walls too - matte on every wall here except the bathroom.

I now use eggshell. Although, I am not the one to ask for the paint color help. 😊

Best quality matte everywhere but the bathrooms. I much prefer it over any sheen. Since it's just me and my adult friends and family who visit, no one is hard on my walls. Painted when I moved in almost 6 years ago, they still look great. Even the kitchen and entry.

I have a matte finish on all my walls. I don’t want any paint sheen to detract from the art on the walls. I use Benjamin Moore Aura with matte finish. It is washable! Truly washable. I’ve tested it. 🤣

I think matte is much easier on the eye, and have it in every room.

Never flat paint. Eggshell/Satin for most rooms and either that or Semi gloss for bathrooms.

Having worked in a nursing home once, I learned buy a big can of matching paint for touch up through the years that a quick clean won’t remove. So, when we repainted the house with most of the rooms in a very light eggshell/off white color, I got a five all on bucket for touch ups. With the dogs, cats, grands and two adult sons, and DH living at home, that can has come out and to the rescue many times! Around doorknobs, light switch plates and where they lean against walls are common repaint areas. My house always lks like it’s new paint! For the rooms that have a color, I but smaller cans that match.

Is there any texture on the walls? Most homes in Colorado have textured walls. I like matte for textured walls.

Satin on all of our walls. I can't stand the feel of matte or flat paint. maryland just curious question- are your walls non-textured and smooth? Would you have a different opinion if textured because you would be able to feel the texture vs. smooth?

Builder grade matte and I hate it.
It shows every mark and doesn't clean well.
One of these days I'll repaint in satin finish.

Our walls were painted 19 years ago with flat. Never again. When I clean spots the paint looks horrible.
As we’ve evolved as a family, we’ve painted the kids rooms with satin.
Our walls are smooth, no texture.
Ceilings are done in satin throughout.
Baseboards/mouldings/doors are all semigloss.

Would you have a different opinion if textured because you would be able to feel the texture vs. smooth? Our celing is textured but our walls are smooth. AT our previous house, a new build, they painted with flat paint and the rooms seemed so much darker. We hired a painter for the family room as it was 2 stories high, and he said the satin would help with the lighting. I know I am not expalaining it well!
