So many vents, actually.
Holy inflation, Batman! I just spend $43 for two not all the way full bags. All ingredients, not convenience food. Nothing fancy. And no meat.
I am so miffed that every grocery store in my area (there are six) has changed to all self checkout lines, and one customer service counter.
Why am I paying higher prices for smaller quantities (shrinkflation!)?
Why am I waiting in a long line so I can unload my groceries, scan my own groceries, bag my own groceries, reload the bags into my cart?!
Why is the self checkout screen asking me to round up and donate to whatever flavor charity they want to get a tax write off to?!
I literally muttered, "I hate my job."
And then i immediately thought, "But this is not my job."
Anyone else feeling the frustration?

Lol. Agreed, except for the rant about self-checkout. Personally I love self-checkout because now that my two favorite checkers have retired I don't have anyone friendly to chat with. The one or two who seem to work during the times when I go shopping are spectacularly unfriendly, as my dd has said. lol. So self-checkout it is. And the employee who usually monitors that area is very friendly. And we're born in the same year so we always have fun with the register telling her to card me for alcohol purchases. hahahahaha Our self-checkouts now have a sign up saying they're limited to 20 items or less which is making a lot of people mad. I will sneak in a few over 20 but not too many more. A lot of customers are saying that if they want to enforce a 20-item limit then they need to put more cashiers on the other registers. Otherwise yeah, inflation, and shrinking sizes, and random shortages (which they can't blame on covid anymore so what's the reason...?) make shopping an annoying experience.

Our Rite Aid used to ask if you want to round up for charity (didn't say what charity) now it automatically rounds up. When I questioned why I didn't have a choice the pharmacist got all snooty and said he would have to re ring it to take off the amount. I didn't stop him . I don't mind donating, if fact I donate to several charities (of my choice) but I do mind if it's just assumed I will.

I loathe self checkout for groceries. I'm resigned to it at Target. You know, I really think that's part of it. That it's for groceries.
I maybe don't mind if I am just running into Target for a handful of items, but most of the time, when I go grocery shopping, it's for two weeks' worth at a time. Could be hundreds of items. Lots of produce.
And even Aldi has all self checkout except one lane, which isn't always manned. The line stretches all the way to the back of the store, because many people do big shopping at Aldi, and it takes time to ring through all those groceries yourself.

I love Meijer's shop and scan.
I'm very picky about how my stuff is bagged to a point where dh will not bag anything unless I tell him which bag. Small trips where we're only getting a few things, I don't care, but the main trips? I want my stuff bagged a certain way, the way I was taught at 16 as a bagger for a smaller grocery chain. Easily bruised produce were bagged separately from the potatoes, onions and lettuce. Frozen stayed together, dairy stayed together, meat together, canned goods never in the same bag as boxed food unless you laid it on top of the cans. If I go to a cashier, the only rule they follow is non food separate from food. Everything else is toss, toss, and hope for the best.
I about lost my shit when the app was down on our usual grocery day and I had to use a cashier. Despite me grouping stuff together and saying I want them bagged together as they are grouped, she reached over and fucked my system up. I'm the shopper cashiers hate when it comes to bagging. So shop and scan it is.

As long as we’re complaining…..
The reason I hate the self checkout is when I buy groceries and 4 cartons of Diet Coke, there is no way humanly possible to put my sacked groceries and the cartons of pop on the itty bitty bagging area. Everything will just not fit! Add a bag of dog food, gallon of milk and a case of water.. !!! Argh. None of the stores I shop at allow you to scan and put items back in the cart. Everything must be in the bagging area. If you don’t, then the register sets off an alarm and loudly calls for assistant. I have no idea how people are stealing at Walmart. It’s virtually impossible to at my local store.
I’m also fed up with Krogers having only one checkout clerk, then they block off over 1/2 the self checkout lanes. It’s ridiculous.

Prices seem to be coming down some. I went to Aldi yesterday and many of the items I purchased had a sign with a previous price marked out and a new lower price shown. I also notice eggs were cheaper at Publix earlier this week. It's not drastic but it's something.
I don't mind self checkout.

I also see prices coming down. I'm a fan of self checkouts. It takes a bit of extra time, but I scan and bag my way which is worth it to me.

I’m seeing some prices come down in my area. I shop at Publix a lot, though, and they are typically more expensive than the other stores. Their customer service is the best, though, and I prefer their deli and bakery. It’s a trade-off.

Yea, prices have gotten out of hand. The only shrinkflation I see is with our Simply chips. Everything else I get is the same size.
I do however love self check out if 1. I have a few items or 2. there are long lines.
I shop mainly between Stater Bros (no self-check outs) and Albertson's (6 self-check outs but 2-3 lanes always open). If I happen to go to Sprouts its for a few things and I use self-checkout.
I really hope that Costco joins the self scan app club because that would be awesome. Thought they are super fast with check out.

I have noticed good drops with eggs, ground turkey, chicken, produce ($1.49 for a box of strawberries? 3 bunches of Asparagus for $5 Yes please!), and del meat at the deli counter.

My husband is a bit picky about how our groceries are bagged too. Because we shop at a store where you bag your own groceries no damaged fruit or diary in the with dry goods.

I am so miffed that every grocery store in my area (there are six) has changed to all self checkout lines, and one customer service counter. I do like doing my own self checkout, but when faced with a large cart full, and some of that produce that has to be weighed, UGH! But HyVee still has 3 or 4 full service lanes, and it is pretty easy to get in line for them. I used that the other day, and gave a big sigh and told the checker and bagger how nice this was! I said "I appreciate this, you just made my day easier!". I think all they hear is b!tiching - because they were just delighted I told them that! I love Meijer's shop and scan. Is that like Walmart's Scan & Go? Gosh I love that. I put my grocery totes in the cart and scan the items as I shop. Then I just hold my phone up to the self checkout screen and BOOM - DONE. Everything is scanned/bagged and I do not have to do it at the tiny self check. It is worth the cost of the app. The reason I hate the self checkout is when I buy groceries and 4 cartons of Diet Coke, there is no way humanly possible to put my sacked groceries and the cartons of pop on the itty bitty bagging area My Walmart is this way. A big 'den' of the self checkouts, but they are tiny little bagging spots. At my Walmart, I can put stuff back in my cart after scanning though. But I have started exclusivly using Scan & Go on the app, so my items are scanned and bagged before I get to self checkout. I somewhat live in fear that I will miss an item, using Scan & Go. So I watch carefully. I put the item in the kid seat part of the cart to scan, then put in my tote. I have trained myself to do this, so I don't randomly toss something in without scanning. The only issue I have is double scanning stuff. My phone can pickup a bar code of something in my cart I already scanned. So I scroll through the screen before I head to self checkout to double check things. Then I make eye contact with the Self checkout workers and ask if I am good to go? ... they usually don't even hardly reply. LOL

I agree about the inflation and shrinkflation! I do like self-checkout. Two grocery stores I go to don’t have self-checkout. I still have to unload my own cart though because the shopping carts stay on the customer side of the line, the exception being Trader Joe’s.
Most self-checkouts I use don’t require you to put your items on the little platform after scanning. I can scan something big without taking it out of my cart or put the item right back in my cart after scanning. Someone mentioned Walmart, and I don’t have to keep my items on the platform next to the register. I guess my Walmart doesn’t have that feature turned on at the self-checkout. But at one time they did have a 15 item limit sign, but those are gone now. The regular checkouts always have a long line at Walmart and Target. And our local Costco has self-checkout now!

I only do pick up.
No frustration about self checkout.
Someone shops for me and loads my car for me. I don’t even have to get out of my pajamas.
That’s more service than ever before and it doesn’t cost extra.

I avoid self checkout unless I only have a couple items. Our local stores still have plenty of staffed lanes. I don’t normally shop unless I’m buying a full week of groceries, so dealing with that and self checkout is a pain. I do frequenting start bagging my own groceries as the cashier is ringing them up. Unless there is a separate person there doing the bagging.

I would say that 50% of the stores I go to ask if I want to donate and it pisses me off. I donate where I want to, not so you can get a tax write off.
Our grocery stores have lots of cashier check out lanes and I use those.
We never used to check for sales at the grocery stores, but now we check the sales flyers weekly. Food prices are outrageous! I don't know how large families do it. I despise shopping now.

What really bugs me is at Costco you can't bag anything while you are scanning at least at the grocery stores you can simultaneously put your first item in your bag down without triggering customer service help. At Costco they don't have any sort of override. You have to just put everything on the bagging area without bagging. It then takes forever to put everything back in your cart one by one. Since you have to go through two receipt checks I don't understand. They have someone count your items before you leave the self checkout area and then you get checked again when you're leaving the store.

at my grocery store, there is one self check out, 4 stands, 1 cashier with small limit.. then 1-3 other cashiers. I don't like the self check out cause it takes longer.. al the other stores are whole foods (all cashier) and small markets, with cashiers. I don't mind about bagging, but why they want to put berries on the bottom is beyond me and I often just rebag after the check stand.
but then I don't go to large grocery stores, like walmart, target, fred myers.. etc..

They have someone count your items before you leave the self checkout area and then you get checked again when you're leaving the store. At the two Costcos I primarily go to neither one makes you wait for a second receipt check at the door. The self checkouts have blue receipt tape and the regular cashier lines have white receipt tape. After I go through the self checkout line, the person monitoring that area does the check, scribbles their scribble on the receipt and all I do is hold it up as I approach the door and they wave me on through. In general, I usually prefer just going the self checkout route. No idle small talk, less waiting in line and no one creeping up too close behind me with their cart. The last multiple times I’ve gone to Target there has only been one live person working at the registers and one live person monitoring the six self checkouts. I generally try not to shop on weekends or other peak times so maybe that has something to do with it. I only tend to shop at off times of the day and days of the week. My only complaint about self checkouts is that they usually never have paper bags at those lanes and I prefer getting paper grocery bags to corral my recycling at home. I hate, hate, HATE those crappy plastic bags with a passion. I reuse those too for bathroom wastebaskets as much as I can, but damn they stack up fast and I never seem to remember to take them with me to the store to recycle them there.

So I thought of another vent I have. Walmart has a lot of employees filing online/pickup orders. They push around these big carts and block aisles. One employee almost t-boned my cart because she was pushing her cart very fast out of an aisle. No excuse me or sorry. I guess they need to fill orders as fast as possible. But really, slow down for safety reasons!!

I don't get in the Costco self-checkout if I have a lot of items, but I go so often (5 minutes from my house) that I rarely do a huge shopping there. Also, my Costco has a cashier/helper at all the self-checkout registers most of the time (which is silly, but whatever...) so usually they'll just scan the items with the wand thingy without even taking stuff out of the cart.

If I only have a few things, I don't mind self checkout. Some of my elderly relatives can't figure out self checkout or are afraid of self checkout. Unfortunately, many of the checkers are crappy, charging them for bags even if they brought their own and forgetting to scan their coupons (I try to stand back to give the relatives independence and only step in if they need help). Helpful checkers get lots of praise like the one helping my mom with her coupons and the assistant manager who opened up another register when another person showed up behind my mom.

I always use, self checkout regardless of how many registers there are.
At grocery store where I work, even at a cashier you'll unload your buggy, and if there's not an avaliable bagger you'll put the bagged groceries back in your buggy after the cashier scans and bags em. But you'll stand in line for the cashier experience.

I'm very picky about how my stuff is bagged I'm not super picky. But there was one time when the cashier dropped cans of chick peas on two loaves of white sandwich bread, completely smooshing them. I requested two unsquished loaves, and she called for someone to bring them, but was very, very huffy about it.
I also don't want my produce all bruised up.
Food prices are outrageous! I don't know how large families do it. I despise shopping now. I have a large family, and live in a semi high cost of living area.
Shopping is so stressful now. There are no splurges, ya know?
I check for discount meat, discount dairy, discount produce. I check the Manager's Specials corner for dry goods that are discounted.
I also continue to shop at our one local fruit stand that has been in the neighborhood for fifty years. Everyday they have 99 cent bags of fruit and/or veggies that need to sell that day. Good way to get a bit more in the house.

Every time I go to the grocery store I am GRATEFUL that there is a store to purchase items from. My friends in Cuba and in the Ukraine do not have such privilege as we have in North America. In Cuba, there is such a shortage of food and other items, the local people are so happy for some soap, shampoo and similar. They eat what they grow. In Ukraine, they literally be killed while attempting to shop, if the store hasn't been bombed. You have money to purchase the food and you are healthy enough to put some effort into obtaining the things that you need and desire. I don't have patience with your privilege today.
