I remember when everyone at 2Peas was having babies or just setting up housekeeping in a new marriage. That was years ago. Now we talk about menopause and mid life crises, kids leaving the nest and retirement.
I realize that I am older than many of you but this is what you have to look forward to. A question for the ages...I hurt my knee about 10 days ago. I did nothing to warrant this pain. I was merely pulling a cart loaded with my baseball, spectator gear up a small hill. Simple right? The last time I injured myself I was putting on my slipper and suffered a cataclysmic back injury (at least for me). The doctor told me it was "age related". I had a vitreous detachment a couple years ago that was "age related". Now, I fear I have to go back to the doctor with my knee injury only to be humiliated again. My last three injuries have been "age related". I am now chronologically older but my brain says I am in my 30's. Oh, woe is me!
How has "age" effected you?

((((Hugs)))) I badly sprained my ACL (knee) last fall...walking through my living room...so I completely sympathise. The MRI found all sorts of other age-related deterioration in my knee...I'm 52 and really don't feel like that all that old, lol.

The PTA treasurer who is replacing me next year was born when I was in high school. She's closer to my oldest child's age than to mine. No that's probably not the age question you were asking but it's the one on my mind.

Don't despair, DEX. Yes, those injuries pop up more easily, and take longer to heal. But they do heal with rest and targeted exercise. If a doctor is telling you it is "age related" that is code for he/she doesn't have a clue why this happened. Insist on xrays. See a physio for some routines to get your knee working for you rather than against you!

I was overweight and my back hurt from being rear ended twice. I thought if I lost a ton of weight my back would get better. I did lose the weight. Serious medical problems cleared up inexplicably and my other joint pain went away the car accident pain lingers. It’s not horrendous but it does make me lazy at times (my father will disagree) but it does. Getting out of the chair is sometimes too much. Then I am ok.

When my family and I get together we talk a lot about our ailments. It sucks, but at least we keep on keeping on. Wishes for a quick recovery!

I've noticed it with the grandbabies. I get down on the floor with them a lot... and I can get back up. Lol. It's the getting back up while holding them that's been a challenge. I remember easily popping up and down with my own babies when they were little. But now, I have to shift the grandbabies onto one hip and then use the other hand to help myself push up and then - well, you get the idea.

I like to play the game, "Where did this bruise come from?" I play this game all the time too! I know I was moving boxes over the last two days, but my arms and legs look like I have been in a fight. And lost!

Definitely getting up off the ground I can sit on the ground cross legged for hours but I can't get up gracefully. Also needing cheater glasses for reading. That one is super annoying.

Something somewhere on me hurts every day but it's important to stay active so I tend to stay busy. One day I won't be able to walk it off but until that day I'm going to keep trying Today the dog and I went for a 4+ mile walk in the woods. It was so lovely for the soul. I came home and sat on the couch to check my emails--20 min later I felt welded in place, like my spine had fused to the cushion. Getting up was a painful process. Getting old is not pleasant! I'm feeling it A LOT more now that menopause has set in.

Arthritis. Swollen aching joints. Every morning I hobble around. At the end of some days, I limp. Once I get myself going, I am okay. It's the "get going" part that takes time and effort. Some days, I wish I could dip my entire body in icy hot or that my entire body could get massaged.

If I'm not keeping up with my yoga, I struggle to put on my underwear and pants without using something for balance. Makes me feel super old. I'm also tired of peeing myself.

I completely trashed my ankle getting up from squatting to pat a cat. When I was finally allowed to fully weight bear, trashed my foot stepping outside. Getting older is not for the feint of heart, however, it's better than the alternative!

For me it’s “spin the wheel of pain to see what you win today!” Also, I cracked a filling in one of my molars about six weeks ago—eating a piece of TOAST. 🙄

It seems it is the doctor's favorite phrase to say "Now that you are older..."
I now have dry eyes which I never had a problem with before menopause. Now that my eyes are drier, an old injury to one cornea sticks to my eyelid at night and then retears. It's called an erosion. I use this gel stuff but that doesn't work all the time. It is annoying because once I put the gel in, I can't see out of that eye so no reading before bed. I investigated the surgery but come to find out, I have another issue with my eye, something hereditary. The surgery to correct the problem might change my vision so I'm just living with it for now.
Dex, I hope your knee gets better.

I don’t have TOO much age-related trouble (no pains) but I do have that issue with getting up from the floor, and I am super nervous going down stairs. I have to take them one at a time because I don’t trust my balance. Going up is no problem. And let’s not even talk about my fractured brain. BUT I also have stage 4 colon cancer. The doctor told me the 5-year survival rate is 40%. BUT he also says I’m “barely” a stage 4, so I may have better odds than the standard, let’s say 50% instead of 40%. And you know what I thought? “meh, I’m almost 70 now. It’s not like I have a 100% shot at living past 75.” I believe I’ve become more at peace with these things in my old age. Still willing to argue politics, though.

Last summer my husband was kneeling on the ground putting an extender on the downspout. When he went to stand up his leg broke and the other one got a severe sprain. What the heck!?
I went to bed fine one night and when I woke up I could barely move. How does that happen?
I could go on and on but you get the picture.

No that's probably not the age question you were asking but it's the one on my mind. The first day of DD starting kindergarten, I looked around at the other moms at drop off and realized that I was the oldest in the room—by at least a decade. I met another mom later who was a year older than myself, but was a really young group! Its all down hill after 40 and the slope gets even steeper at 50.

Omg, it's like half of you are living in my house. My mind is racing around achieving multiple tasks but my body is saying "hold up, let's just think about this for a minute or ten" My real "you are not as young as you think you are" moment was recent double cataract surgery and I'm not even sixty yet. Love the result (only need reading glasses now) but damn it, my brain still thinks I'm in my thirties. Got called for a smear test recently, the only thing that crossed my mind was, is this the last one? if so, yay! lucyg just sending hugs across the ocean, I wasn't aware of your health issue, I'm another that enjoys your posts.

I was really happy when my friends all stopped getting married and I stopped having all of my vacations be weddings . Then I was sad when we all stopped having babies, and I really did mourn the end of that and found it hard. Anyhow the main way in which I have found aging to affect me is a return of the insomnia I kicked 25 years ago, with a vengeance. Also my knees absolutely won't let me take running back up -- after a week of running, they get really painful.

I wasn't aware of your health issues either lucyg (although to be fair, I might have known and my meno brain deleted the info) I wish you the best ((hugs)) I was asked "Do you still drive?" the other day, by the optician I'm 61. I asked why she's asked me and she just said "Well, people do start giving up around retirement." I have no plans or need for giving up driving yet As far as the physical stuff I have been following various people on Insta who promote Natural Movement. It's all about using your joints to their full capacity (rotating your shoulders/hips, fully extending and flexing knees, ankles etc) on the 'lose it or use it' basis. They also promote actively practising and working on ways of getting up off the floor, practising balancing etc to help prevent falls. I try to make time to incorporate some of these routines and exercises every day to ward off 'the inevitable' and actually it becomes really enjoyable and I can feel a difference when I don't do the joint work etc.

lucyg I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You are such a treasured member of our Pea Family. I can only say I hope you’re like my dad, who outlived his doctor’s prognosis by a decade. So far. As for the woe is me issue: Bunions. Cataracts. Age spots. Balance issues. Hearing loss and tinnitus. Skin so dry and flaky it’s embarrassing, even though I use lotion. Hair thinning. Fingernail waviness. Strength disappearing rapidly. Several painful falls. It just feels like the minute I started receiving social security all these aging issues just started showing up. Like one day I wasn’t old. The next day I was.
