Hi all, I was furniture shopping (moving to new house in July) and wound up at Macy's in the mattress section. I didn't realize their mattress selection was pretty decent. No other shopper was in the whole furniture section and the salesman, Joe, came up and asked if I needed help and so I started asking about mattresses. There's so many to choose from. We have an old Beauty Rest, so started with those. Many hybrid models. There's a closeout on the King Koil brand retails at $8000 and on sale for $3400. He said the Purple brand was their most returned brand and will not carry them. Joe suggested to hang out on the mattress for at least 5-15 minutes. Next time I think I'll bring a sheet. LOL. What about firmness? What do you like/dislike about your mattress?

I have a Sleep Number bed and it is pricey, but I love my mattress. I can adjust the head and feet and the firmness/softness. There is an app that measures all sorts of stuff. I just love my bed. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Recently, I bought a Sleep Number Pillow, too. If it's too much for your wallet I suggest Spring Air, very well made mattresses.

I am planning on buying a Saatva mattress this weekend, actually. Our last mattress, I've never had a good nights sleep even though it was a popular mattress made by a local company. The thing that's preventing me to just buy, is the firmness level. I like a firm mattress, like Asia level firm which is harder than in the US. My problem with the current one is that I don't think it's firm enough. So I am leaning toward the Firm, over the Luxury Firm, but a little worried it might be too much for my DH.

My sister bought a pillow top mattress when they were popular. She said the result was it made a "trough" for her and a trough for her DH. She had it replaced for a standard mattress.

Yep, Saatva ALL the way. Best mattress we have ever had. We have it on two beds in the house now, and will get it for the 3rd bedroom once we decide if we are getting a King or not. Ours is 6 years old, and the newer one is 3 years old. LOVE them!

I bought a Saatva in 2018-2019ish and it was nice at first but already I think it needs replaced because I can feel a spring in it. It might work if you are not plus sized.
I got my kids Sealy Posturepedics plush mattresses from Costco and the price was great and they are super comfortable.
When my daughter goes away to college I am going to switch mine with hers to see if I like it, and if so, I think I will get one for myself.

We have a Casper and we like it - it's really comfortable - but it runs hot. I would definitely ask that question of any mattress you get now because memory foam can retain heat.

There’s nothing like a Sleep Number especially if there is a decent size/weight difference between the two people sleeping on it. My DH is easily 150 lbs heavier than I am so when we had a traditional pillowtop mattress his side quickly developed a pit that I unfortunately inherited when the mattress was rotated and flipped as recommended, ugh. No thank you! Now he sets his side for the firmness he likes, I set my side for the (lack of) firmness I like and everyone is happy except the big dog who doesn’t like sleeping in the middle. Oh well, LOL. We’ve had our original Sleep Number bed for almost 20 years without a single complaint, so we bought another for ourselves at our lake cabin, another for our guest room at home, another at an estate sale for our guest room at the lake and DD got a secondhand one from a friend for free for her room at the lake. We’re all fans.

We have a Sealy king that we've had for almost 12 years and it's still going strong. We like our mattress on the firmer side. We do have a really comfy mattess pad. I think mattress shopping is really an individual thing.

A furniture store chain local to us had a mattress where you could get each side a different firmness and a program that would assess what firmness was right for you. Best mattress we've had. The chain went under shortly after we bought it and now I dont know where we will get our next mattress- we will be due in the next few years

crazy4scraps we have a split Ca. King sleep number. He likes his side firm and I like mine a bit softer. I love that we can each have our mattress just as we like it. I'm like a zealot about Sleep Number now.

We also really love our Sleep Number. I like a firmer mattress and DH likes softer, so it’s perfect for us! We also have one in our RV.

If you want a coil mattress, this article explains about them quite well.
If a person is plus size, a lower guage tempered coil is best for the added support/durability, yet the coil mattess gives to pressure points and helps with sleeping cooler rather than hotter like a latex mattess does.

We have a local manufacturer here in the Twin Cities called Original Mattress Factory. I have purchased 4 sets from them, for our bed and for guest rooms. I love them.

I want either a split king or a sleep number (I actually want an adjustable so I can sleep sitting up a bit) and he dislikes the cost. But he weighs more than double what I do so our needs are very different. So we’re at a stalemate 🙄

I work for a furniture retailer (on the corporate side). By far, our biggest seller outside of our own brand is the Tempurpedic. I myself haven't bought a mattress in about 12 years, so I'm sorry I don't have a personal recommendation for you!

We have a local manufacturer here in the Twin Cities called Original Mattress Factory. Oh man, this brought up a memory for me of friends moving into their first apartment together in college. A crappy basement studio we spent a LOT of time in. Their mattress came from the cast offs the local mattress factory would set out by the dumpster at night. We went and grabbed one, threw it on top of the car and went. They had that thing for years, I'm sure it was terribly uncomfortable. But as broke college kids the price was right!
