This board is going too slow so I'm going to add a few topics.
So, here is the ever popular trend thread.
What are the new trends in scrapping you see? Thankfully, no mustaches.
Three that I think are becoming popular now:
1. Retro- It used to be vintage 1800s-1920s stuff way back in the scrapping days of yore, but now retro motifs seem to be centered on the 1950s through 1980s. I'm seeing a lot of 1960s/1970s fonts showing up. Being a child of that era, I'm finding some use for this trend. Also, I'm forever a Grateful Dead era hippy, so it just fits my personality.
2. Fake mixed media backgrounds- I like this one because I like the look and I'm really lazy when it comes to mixed media.
3. Neutral baby colors- I'm really happy with this one because we have been complaining about gendered lines forever. My issue with this now is that they are all brown. Why can't we have a line that has nice baby colors like green and yellow? I actually think this is not just a scrapbook thing- I'm seeing a lot of baby furniture and decorations that are very neutral. It is classy but I'm a color fan.
What are you seeing? And what is replacing the mustaches and llamas in scrapbooking?

The biggest thing I see right now is the late 1970s to mid 1980s. I also still see a lot of butterflies and I believe Zebras are replacing the llamas. And I am here for it since DD and I (and most likely DS) has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. So give me all the Zebras.
I don't see as many mixed media backgrounds as I used to. I would add more splats to mine most of the time but they seem aged to me.

I'm seeing a lot more floral embellishments. Even embellishment packs of just florals. I'm all for it. I have a hard time scrapping without florals and hearts.

As someone who scrapped boys, I think floral embellishments have been the number 1 embellishment since I started scrapping in 2001. But I do agree that now they just sell floral embellishment packs just like they do journal packs or tag packs. |

I have seen an influx of multiple tags on layouts.
I do love the faux mixed media backgrounds on so many new lines. I thing 49 and Market is thriving on this.

Just coming here to remark on the role 49 & Market are having on trends right now. The mixed media, color scheme, wash style papers, Basic Grey vibes, also tags and interesting ephemera options like rub ons, envelopes, etc are all trending. I see lots of distress oxide looking stamping, art journal vibes too. I think the stamps and stamping methods of Heidi Swapp also have this mixed feel to them. |

One thing I’ve noticed with 49 and Market is the laser cut elements essential are all items that I can cut with the dies and punches I already have, even the bread clip.

Rub-ons are popping up again. Having had some old crumbling rub-ons in my stash, I have been really hesitant to add these to my stash, but I have given in and purchased some from 49 & Market. They are really lovely. I just need to make a point of using them, rather than saving all of them.

49th & Market are also on the “no white border” die cut trend. I bought the Inkwell collection 12x12 pack (I 💙 blue) and also inkwell rub ons. My LSS is carrying a whole wall of 49th & Market.
I also agree on MCM as the new vintage. I bought a die set from Queen & Co with what I consider “atomic” icons (like the Las Vegas sign). Can’t wait to make some cards with it.

I have noticed bigger photographs. Instead of a 4 x 6...... use a 5 x 7 and a couple-few small photos (wallet size). I like the look of this. I am going to try it. I am envisioning...a 5 x 7 on one side of a page, all the way to the edge.......then few wallet size layered on or adjacent to, the other edge of the 5 x 7, an alphabet title across the top (or bottom). Of course, what I envision.... doesn't always turn out, but it will be fun trying it and figuring it out.  |

Great question. I'm not sure if it's new, but polaroid type frames seem to be everywhere. And filmstrips, but mostly 49th & market. I've seen dies & stamps too and I think Studio calico has some. And I think there's a Tim Holtz ribbon.

I have seen this cycling in again and I am really not a fan. I like a bit of colour on my pages. Speaking of colour, the ever-present pink has morphed into a more coral shade, which I prefer to the bubblegum shades of the recent past. This summer the outdoor lines are continuing the back country hike vibe, with lots of sketched grasses, mushrooms, leaves. (49 & Market Nature Study look) Lots of muted greens and blues. For design, I am seeing alot of starbursts and rays on pages and cards. One photo, sometimes less than 4x6, positioned in the corner of the page. Foiling and letterpress techniques for cards. Is this moving into scrapbook titles as well? I see lots of stitching and fussy cutting, but maybe I have been watching too much Paige Evans. |

I listen to a bunch of health & fitness podcasts and I remember one on Dr. Shawn Baker’s old podcast when he had a guest on who is a woman with EDS (and I believe she was herself a doctor) who went into basically full remission of all symptoms and issues of severe EDS after adopting a zebra carnivore diet. So with EDS everyone is affected differently. While we all have common conditions and problems, we are all affected in a unique way. So because Zebra stripes are not the same, we are to think hoofbeats as not always horse, and a group of Zebras is a dazzle and we dazzle in our uniqueness. |

Lemons seem to be everywhere, and some other fruits. Paper tearing. I’m also seeing a lot of paper rolling, whether it’s the ends (one or both) or curling across a page to give dimension. Butterflies, while always around, seem to be making a bigger showing.
I think 49 & Market is beautiful and has been a refreshing choice and injection into the American Crafts dominated industry. But, it’s an interesting observation to me that the 49 & Market has such a digital scrapbooking vibe (no surprise since Katie Pertiet is a digi designer) from really the early 2010s digi styles, and paper scrappers who eschew digi are going nuts over it all, especially the paper versions of dimensional embellishments (clips, ribbons, buttons) and the pre-made pages (digi quick pages) that lack dimension. I do love the style, and it takes me back to when I was heavily (and exclusively) into digi.

I’m loving the nature inspired lines that aren’t so themed to camping and such. They’re great for gardening, nature walks, those random cool photos we take of a neat looking plant, plus hiking and outdoorsy stuff. I love that they’re less theme specific.
There’s a lot more floral/distress/butterfly/pastel vibe going on that a lot of companies seem to be copying from one another. To the point I can’t tell them apart very well. I don’t like this look and have a hard time scrapping with it anyway, so I’m waiting for it to die 😂
I love the neutral baby lines. So much so that I’ve bought a couple (Simple Stories and Echo Park) to use with my own children’s older photos that I haven’t scrapped or to use with favorites I want to scrap again with these. I’d imagine my own 80s baby photos would look good with them too. The film photos seem to be darker and more brown anyway. I’ll have to try it.

I echo the resurgence of rub-ons. The 49th and Market rub-ons are amazing. There seems to be a lot of stitching lately. I follow both Paige Evans and Allison Davis and they stitch a lot.

I am noticing that people are beginning to cut their photos into circles again. A lot of examples have been showing up on my feed as of late.
Me personally, I don't care for circular photos. I have been cropping a lot of my own into squares, though.

I haven’t shopped or even scrapped for a few months so I’m loving this thread for ideas. I’ve always liked florals and the vintage/shabby chic look. I might need to update my stash a bit.
I’m wondering about the rub ons since back in the day they were popular but some were not well made. Parts of the design would not rub off or months later they’d peel off your layout.

In addition to the industry predictably using the same tired colors/sentiments/icons - repeated on all products within a collection - for the same themes on a loop, I find most collections are stereotypically feminine, floral (discussed here), retro/vintage/distressed/dated, & yellow (lots of unusual shades that IMHO visually dominate color palettes). Perhaps because I used & still have the original Basic Grey in my inventory, I dislike the current knock-offs, especially the faux mixed media/dimension, pre-distressing, etc. I'm not interested in detail/fussy cutting sheets, fruits, or insects, but embrace the rare earthy color palette (despite the inevitably overused sentiments/icons throughout the collection) & 4x6 or larger photos. Still hoping for a versatile, non-themed, white-based, clean, & modern collection in a cool neutral color palette... |
