I live on a busy road.
There are two cats in the house.
It doesn't seem to matter how often I vacuum and dust, hours after I dust, there is a coating on the surface again.
I feel it makes my home look dirt and unkempt, and I'm just so tired of seeing it.
How do you keep dust from noticeably adhering to every horizontal surface within a day of dusting?

When you get an answer, please let me know. I live in a highrise condo, in the downtown area. Whenever I open my windows, I think that a pound of dirt & dust is simply flying into my home. High enough that there are rarely flys or other bugs. I also sew a LOT and have found that sewing with pre-cuts, those tiny pinked-cut edges create a ton of lint. It is everywhere! No animals. I simply vacuum a LOT.

I hate dust. I literally run a duster thru the rooms constantly, it's exhausting. It's the perfect example of shoveling the ocean or herding cats.

Don't touch anything then it won't look dusty.
I hear you! We have 2 dogs and live backed up to the woods. I have already pretty much caved into the dust look as part of my decorating skills.

Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter. After my kid was diagnosed with allergies to dust mites we put a Germ Guardian air purifier in her room and we run it 24/7. It has really helped a lot to pull the dust from the air, so much so that I bought two more so we’d have one in our bedroom and one in the family room where we all spend a lot of time. Pro tip: the manual says to vacuum the dust off of the filter monthly to extend the life of the filter and to improve performance and that really does help. I probably vacuum a half inch of dust off the filters monthly. It’s insane how much dust they pull out of the air. The filters need to be changed roughly every six months.

I live in a new townhouse development with construction across the street. I can't wait until that is done and there is grass on those lots. I could wipe down my front porch every day. My window sills accumulate a lot of dust.

My house is entirely under control, except for dust. The 3 of us have the chores we prefer, which compliment the others. However, dusting is the one outlier. DH doesn’t see the dust. I loathe dusting because it is a thankless effort. The Boy will dust if asked, but he ignores it as much as the rest of us.

Long hair, falling out, doesn't help either. It gathers with the dust in piles on the floors.

Air purifiers with HEPA filters will make a big difference. I got one a few years ago and noticed a difference. But since it was only in the bedroom, the rest of the house was still an issue. Then back in March of this year we had a new a/c and furnace installed and all the ductwork replaced. While they did that we had them install a whole house air purifier as well. That's been the game changer. Probably not practical for most people, but if anyone is replacing their a/c in the near future, ask about having one installed at the same time.
When dusting, the best method is an electrostatic disposable duster, as it grabs the dust and holds on to it. Next best is to use microfiber cloths.

I have learned how to ignore a lot of it. It isn’t dirty and I just can’t get to a point where it bothers me that much. It’ll always be there so do it (damp cloth) sometimes then ignore it and do something more interesting- life’s too short 😊

I use an air purifier, not perfect but it helps a lot. I regularly change the air filter, that is up in ceiling in the main vent. Dust is a part of my home decor charm. If someone is going to judge me because they see dust, that's their issue......not mine, because I don't care if there's dust. I gave up on the dust battle, decades ago.

We have three HEPA air purifiers and three homemade air filters, plus our heat pump has a filter on it, and we still have dust everywhere... I'm starting to think someone is siphoning it into our house as a prank...
ETA: DH says my books are causing it... no I have not yet murdered him.

We also have air purifiers throughout our house, and it helps quite a bit. Make sure you’re changing your house air filters often enough. Another thing that helps is that our house is well sealed, check your doors and windows.
Something I’ve found that makes dusting tons easier is not having much on our horizontal surfaces. That’s just how we prefer it anyway, and has been for quite a while, and I noticed as we were getting rid of a lot of things how much easier dusting is.
I also dust each room (reusable Swiffer) once every week or every other week. It’s takes less than 5 minutes a room, some rooms about a minute. And since I do it frequently I don’t have to worry about doing it perfect every time because if I miss a spot it’ll be taken care of soon.
I’ve read if you dust your moldings with a dryer sheet it will repel dust, but I’ve never tried it.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
DH says we shouldn't dust because it might be someone we know.
Makes sense

My mantra remains true: A house is not a home unless you can write the word love in the dust. Agreed! And it goes hand in hand with a sign I had in our home while the kids were growing up: Our home is clean enough to be healthy, and dirty enough to be happy.

My dark wood floors are the bane of my home because they show absolutely every speck. I decided that I am not a slave to my floors and home. I clean them once a week and call it good!

Something else that occurred to me, look into having your ventilation ducts cleaned.

I stupidly bought a black glass TV cabinet some years ago. I wipe it down with a damp cloth to pick up all the dust, rather than redistribute it. But it is always dusty again within ten minutes of me cleaning it. Ugh. I will never buy black glass anything again. Interestingly, my coffee table is also black glass, but does not seem to pick up as much dust as the TV cabinet.
