This pisses me off every summer. People head to the pool, throw their stuff on 4 chairs then jump in the pool and don't get out until they're ready to go home.
Today at the pool a guy saw a chair empty and asked the lady next to it if it was taken. She didn't know so he took it. Woman on the other side came back, saw the chair was gone and asked for it back. Guy very politely gave it back, woman threw a shirt on it and got back in the pool (keep in mind she has 3 other chairs). She got in and out of the pool and sat in ONE chair with the 3 other chairs full of her party's stuff and NO ONE got out to use them. When the family got ready to leave they clustered around ONE chair to get dried off. Not once did they use the chair she reclaimed from the guy who tried to take it. - in fairness this was a very polite exchange, no one was rude. But come on, you're not going to use it, it's hot today and i saw multiple families looking for a place to sit only to be greeted by a sea of towels and people in the pool. If you're going to spend your time in the pool put your stuff on ONE chair and leave the rest for those of us who use the pool to sit and enjoy the sun the sounds.
When we got up to leave (2 of us, one chair) the same guy asked if we could have my chair and I said sure, relaying that I had witnessed the woman who had asked for her chair back, only to not use it. The guy said he had 6 people, and they share 2 chairs.
I'm done. We love the pool and I try to be very conscious of how often I'm being negative. But this gets me every freaking year. Part of it is I can't just dump my stuff and sit on the ground, I have to have some kind of chair with my knee in the shape that it's in. If there's nothing available I've been known to sit at the concession stand and wait for one to open up while DS swims in the pool.

I'll validate you. It would irritate the crap out of me. However, years ago when we were in Hawaii, the staff put a bunch of towels on the 5 lounge chairs next to where DS and I were reading. About 15 minutes, the said recipients of the chairs arrived. It was Magic Johnson and his family. DS was about 10 and was star struck. Later, he was in the pool playing catch with a football and Magic pretended to tackle him. I swear he didn't wash that arm for a week. A family we had met by the pool knew Magic and introduced DS and me to him. When DH came back from golfing, he couldn't believe the story we told him. Is this a public or private pool? Can it somehow be addressed?

If it’s a private pool in a community I would complain, if it’s a public pool nothing you do about it.

there will always be the people who think if they got there early, they earned the right to the chair, whether they use it or not. They want the option to use it. It's exasperating, but I just don't think those kind of people can be reasoned with. They are the "I got mine" folks and they really don't give a shit about the people who come later.

Holy crap cadoodlebug, that's amazing! For Magic I'd be willing to give reserved seats. Unfortunately, this is a public community pool. No way to address it and most of the lifeguards are teenagers and I can see the argument from pool management now, there's just no way to police it effectively. We've had more than one incident at this pool, the worst was a group of teens who had clustered under the shaded area and every third word out of them was some kind of cuss word. Fbombs, B-word, statements punctuated with a cuss word. of course the only free chair was next to them. We lasted 10 minutes and just left. Some people just don't know how to act in public.

I have a friend with 5 kids and we belonged to the same pool club and she wouldn't allow her kids to each take one chair, but their nanny would. And it made everyone insane lol. Finally, someone talked to her and asked her to have the nanny at least consolidate the kids' things a little and it was better but man, were people pissed off that this group would take up 6 chairs and the kids spent the whole time in the pool.

I’ll back you for being angry. I just don’t understand selfish people like this. And typically, it is these same selfish people that go nuts if they see something that another person is already using and they want it. They will ask for “a favor” and if the other person doesn’t immediately give up the item, they get belligerent and cause a scene. I think the only way these selfish people are going to limit the number of chairs they claim is if they have to pay to rent them. If the chairs are kept by the snack booth and rented out by the hour, I guarantee there will be plenty of chairs to go around. They will rent one chair for all their junk, if they bother to even rent one. And the concession stand brings in more money. All that would need to be purchased is a tag system for the existing chairs, a sign out sheet, and a long metal chain and lock to keep the chairs secured until rented out. They already have staff at the concession stand that could be used to dispense the chairs. I would make a presentation to whoever is in charge of the public pool. Usually bringing up a problem and supplying a viable solution is taken more seriously than just a complaint. And the fact that it would make a little bit of money for the town (or whoever) makes it that much better. They can earmark that money for replacing the chairs when they wear out. My only other suggestion is to bring your own chair and a wheeled cart to hold your family’s towels up off the deck floor. I have a chair that I bought at the local county fair that I love. The chair collapses into a lightweight thing that you carry via backpack straps. It also has a few pouches to hold keys, a phone, and snacks. And the best part, it has a sun shade that you just slide up over the top of the chair that also has a couple more pouches in it accessible from sitting in the chair. I used it at the beach when I used to go there. And then it was part of my car camping gear. I would even pull it out to sit in when watering my newly planted landscape in the front yard. I can’t stand in one spot for too long without greatly increased pain. Oh, and I also took it to the dog park when I had to spend hours there during the open house when trying to sell. I love that chair, mainly because of the backpack straps, the sun shade top, and how light it is. This is not the same brand, but it looks very much like my chair: www.renetto.com/products/canopy-chair?variant=42759217840353¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2019-02-26&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7PCjBhDwARIsANo7Cgl_eiPWtCefyxKXqz-FyKDOeqSpWouKMfLu92VVcTZY8SALmrIgjFoaAlkSEALw_wcB

I grew up at a private community pool. I just tossed my stuff on the grass all the time. My mom would claim a table with ONE chair (for her) and the kids were expected to just put their towels out on the grass or stacked on the table my mom had. We NEVER sat in the chairs.

I agree OP - I hate that!!! When we go to Lake George in the Summer, we always reserve our pool chair in the morning if we can and as a family of 5, I feel guilty even taking 2 loungers because I know we aren't all using them. I absolutely sit and read in one, and then the other is either for one of my daughters who will tan or the kids to all keep their crap and towel off. No way do I even think about taking a chair for each member of my party when I know full well the kids are going to be in the pool swimming 90% of the time.

Oh totally validate you!! I need not just a chair but SHADE. I pop into the pool/ocean to cool off, but am otherwise in the shade. It drives me insane when people have a plum spot under a polapa all day for their freaking shoes and towel. Why, just why?!?!

Does your pool have the 15 min break? This practice of saving chairs annoys the shit out of me too, BUT our pool has a 15 minute swim break every hour and only 18 yr and older are allowed to stay in the pool. The kids often lay in a chair at our pools during the breaks, but now we have a playground outside of the pool so if there are no chairs they shouldn;t be hogging it and playing at the playgound (IMO)

I agree! We would bring our own chairs so that the kids could have them to use and I would get one at the pool. We also didn't want to take up chairs when the kids would be in the pool a lot. We also brought an umbrella because I didn't want to be in the sun all day.

I’ll also validate you on this. It’s selfish and rude to hog all the chairs all day when you likely won’t ever get out of the pool to use them, especially on a cruise or in a place where you’re limited to using the chairs that are provided and can’t bring your own. I think it would be better for these places to provide easily accessible lockers for people to store their stuff and don’t let anybody reserve a chair they’re not actively sitting in.
We have a park in our area with a man made kid friendly swimming beach that is very popular in the summer. There are a very limited number of shaded cabanas at this beach. (ETA: otherwise there are NO natural shaded areas.) People will come in very early when the park opens and claim a cabana, dump all their stuff there and then never get out of the water. And then stay there ALL.FREAKING.DAY. I’m sorry, it’s just entitled and rude IMO. It would be less irritating if the people would get out of the water and hang out in the shade of the cabana but they don’t. I could see letting people reserve it for a limited time (maybe one or two hours at most) but not all day. Meanwhile, there are people like me who for whatever reason can’t or shouldn’t be out in the sun for prolonged periods who end up either limiting our time at the park or roasting and dying out in the sun the whole time we’re there.
To me, I think the policy in all of these situations should be use it or lose it.

This reminded me of a time when we were on a private beach and a guy and his family had chairs (4) and a palapa next to us. They were in the ocean and the family kept coming back and using the chairs and palapa as well as the attached table and had their drinks on it. They also had beach bags and anyone in the vicinity clearly knew it was taken. Another lady came up took their stuff (all of it) and placed it back about 6 rows towards the hotel. I thought she must have known them or something that gave her a reason for the four new people to move their stuff. They did not. The family was back in just a few minutes and there was yelling and security was called. It was crazy. The new people had moved their bags and drinks and told security that they had no idea why these people were saying they'd been there originally. Crazy behavior. Of course security asked all of the people around them and we all were honest and the new people got kicked off the beach. I've seen people move abandoned towels, but I've never seen people just move in and move stuff out like that.
OP, almost any beach we've been to is like that almost everywhere. Thankfully some places have a lot more chairs than others and you can still find places. I will say that Vegas pools are the worst (IMO). They even have signs saying that you can't reserve spots but people just go ahead and do it.

People absolutely do this on cruises. They get up early, throw their towels over their chair and might not come back for a few hours. It's just RUDE! aj2hall , I really hope that someone was bold enough to confront those really awful people. How can you do that and not be embarrassed? Unfortunately, we live in a world that is all about ME! There's too many entitled people and not enough gratitude!
cadoodlebug , that's a great story. I've heard that Magic Johnson is a very nice guy. Do you remember Jack Carter, the comedienne? When my sister and I were little girls we were staying at a hotel in Vegas. Jack Carter was walking out to the pool at the same time we were. I asked if he was Jack Carter and he responded and then took my sister and I by the shoulders and told us that he wanted us to play w/his grandchildren who were at the pool. He was just being a fun grandpa.

Ugh, that would annoy me too! Are you allowed to take your own chairs? It's been a while since I've been to one, but our public pools don't have lounge chairs. everyone takes their own folding / camp chairs to sit on, or picnic blankets.

Are you allowed to take your own chairs? unfortunately no. This is one of those things that's not going to go away and will annoy me all summer. It just really got to me today when the lady asked him to move the chair back only to never use it. However, I'm going to ask if it's allowed at the end of season party for members as that's always terribly crowded and chairs are at a premium.

I think that couple was on our Alaska cruise! Everyone on the land portion started calling them the clueless couple. They even moved the handicap placards from the bus seats behind the driver in Denali and sat there. The driver made them move .

I remember our old neighborhood pool when I was a kid. There were lots of chairs and recliners. The kids would take one chair per party to put their stuff on, while the older people got the lounge chairs. But that was a long time ago..

There was a TikTok a couple months ago about a resort that had employees go out and remove towels on the "saved" chairs, they needed 2-3 people because there were so many towels. These were chairs that were reserved before the sun was up because the employees were removing the towels as the sun was just coming up. One guy was there for a week, giving a play by play, he said it was the highlight of the trip and he'd video the people coming back LOSING their minds that their towels had been removed. Yelling for security and staff, basically almost assaulting folks who, legitimately (i.e. came to the pool and were sitting in them), took the chairs. Several people demanding the manger. Oh boy. It was embarrassing for these folks, acting like entitled children. Signs posted all over the property that reserving chairs with towels is not allowed and said towels would be removed. I wish I remembered the name of the resort because they didn't back down once and I thought to myself, for this alone, I'd visit that resort.
Back when DS was younger, my cousin and I would take the kids to the waterpark (it was our annual trip) and we had more issues with people just moving our stuff off the chairs that the final couple of years we went we split a cabana. It wasn't worth the aggravation of coming back and fighting with people, plus you never know what crazy people will do nowadays. We had seen quite a few fist fights break out over chairs. The last year we went, we had decided we'd had enough, the kids were older and the day we were there there were so many fights. And this was a 'kid' water park not like the huge one, Water Country, in NH.

We belonged to a private pool when the kids were growing up. All of us would get a chair, put our stuff on it, and use it for the hourly breaks all day long. Sometimes one or more of us would sit in it later. As they got older, sometimes I'd sit in mine and read. This is how most people used then.
I don't see a problem with using them that way. I would think that is how most people at a pool use them unless you are at the beach or somewhere without breaks.

Although they may have been bought by someone. They absolutely spent all day long collecting abandoned towels and freeing up chairs. Not sure what they do if people leave actual stuff.

A resort we frequent in Hawaii has pool staff who keep track of those "claimed but not used" chairs. They come around a fold a towel in a certain way at the top of the chair. If they come by an hour later and the towel is still there, still folded, they gather up the belongings and take the to one of the pool huts, where they can be claimed by the owners, freeing up chairs for others.

I think it’s a whole different story if you’re actually sitting in the chairs periodically though. It’s when people take up a whole bank of chairs and then never get out of the pool to sit in them that people are taking issue with.

So I must be the only lounge chair claimer on 2 peas and I will own it. I don't care if I am in the pool for 2 hours straight, lounge 15 mins, then get back in. Those things are dang hard to get your hands on and if I can get one I will lay claim for the whole day. I only go to the pool once or twice a year though. Never been on a cruise. Been to lots of various music festivals though. People get there the minute the gates open and place their lawn chairs in front of the stages for all the venues. Even for the concert that starts at 9pm the chairs are placed in position at 8am.
