Kidney stones suck! A week ago last Wed I started getting nausea. It continued till the weekend and the pain in my abdomen started late late Friday night and got worse thru Saturday. It seemed to ease up Sunday morning for a bit so I thought I might have just passed a stone, but then it got really bad again. And it continued thru Monday and finally Tuesday I conceded and went to the ER/urgent care associated with the hospital. I have no idea why us women are so stubborn and think we can just tough it out.
I've had stones before but this time it felt different. I did not have nausea with previous stones. In the ER they went right for a CAT scan and sure enough I had a 12 mm stone lodged in my kidney blocking the urine and infecting the kidney. I only realized how serious it could be when the Dr tapped on my toes and said this pretty serious, mentioning sepsis.
I was in the ER all day Tues. Since I had already had received morphine they wouldn't allow family to take me to the hospital. So I enjoyed my first ambulance ride at around 8:30pm. They were still thinking they could do surgery and stent that night but nope, Dr wasn't available. So the first night I was lucky (again lol) to spend the night not sleeping due to the screaming banshee in the next room. (I think the gal had dementia). Only the morphine helped me get an hour or two of sleep. I spent all day Wed in the hospital where they could monitor me, and finally had the surgery/stent at around 11:30 and back in the room at just about 1AM! I was released Thursday afternoon.
It feels like it was ages ago. I have followups with my primary and the urologist. Thank goodness for pain meds, this stent is no dang fun.
So my PSA is DON'T BE ME, DON'T IGNORE PAIN.

My sympathy. DH has had 21 (I think). No fun for the patient and no fun for the family member who must watch and be unable to help.
His kidney doctor has him drinking a glass of water with baking soda in it at bedtime to prevent more stones forming. It must be working as he has not had a stone in several years--previously he had one almost every year to 18 months.

I've had several. Thankfully they all passed without needing surgery.
I drink 70oz of water daily (as ordered from ER Doctor) to help flush out my system, preventative measures.
Wishing you healing and good health.

My understanding is that stents are very uncomfortable. It's a good thing that they have you on pain meds. I hope that it'll be removed quickly and that you'll feel much better asap.

Oh no, I’m sorry!
My DD had to have emergency surgery twice for kidney stones while she was in college. Both she and DH have had their share of ER visits for them, so I’ve seen, but not borne, the misery.
12mm sounds huge! I hope you’re feeling better soon.

I hope you are feeling better! Yikes, that was a lot.
The screaming banshee made me laugh. Once when we had DH in the ER, there was a woman screaming and begging for her broccoli! She kept yelling for the nurse "Where's my broccoli. I want my broccoli!". She eventually got it and then started screaming she wanted more broccoli! This was in the middle of the night. We also assumed some sort of dementia.

He puts 1 tsp of soda in 8 Oz. Of water. He said he does it during the day because he doesn't want to get up in the night to pee.

Sending you a hug, that sounds like a crappy experience. My dearest friend ignored abdominal pain for a few years. It was not constant, she would get nauseated and feel abdominal pain that she assumed was food poisoning / food sensitivities. When it finally reached a point of "something is wrong with me" and she went to the emergency room it was stone lodged on the wall of her gallbladder. She had emergency surgery, weeks of recovery time and still has problems from her. Good PSA

I had a kidney stone over 3/4 of an inch for months..there was just a nagging ache in my side. they ended up going in, pulverizing it and vacuuming it out --so the surgery was minor.

I'm so sorry. DH gets kidney stones and he is generally not affected by pain. Stones are another story. His urologist told him she'd had kidney stones and been through natural childbirth. The kidney stones, she said, were way worse.
Wishing you a speedy and easy recovery!

Thank you all. The sharp stabbing pain is gone, just can't wait for this stent to be gone. Walking jiggles it in my bladder LOL and you all know what a full bladder wiggled feels like.

Sorry to be bumping an older thread, but I saw this post while I was in the throes of my first battle with kidney stones. I was too miserable even to post. I have had one surgery for the stone in my ureter, and another is next week for two in my actual kidney. The whole experience has been miserable, and I'm drinking water like my survival depends on it. I do NOT want to experience a recurrence. I've heard that stones spike in many people when the weather gets warm, so I want to remember that next spring and be aware of any pain early on. Anyway, OP, I hope you've recovered well. My warmest thoughts are with all those who have gone through this pain.

jayfab glad you are on the road to recovery. Kidney Stones suck so badly. 12mm is huge! I landed in the ER with a 7mm a couple of years ago. When the scan came back the ER doc was surprised I was in as much pain as I was. My urologist walked in on this conversation and lost it on the guy, pointing out that my ureters were child size. I did manage to pass it, but my urologist said never again was he going to let me pass one that size. @legacy girl, I wish wish you well as you get those buggers resolved. Interesting about the warm weather causing a spike. Mine have all been in February. My dr said it’s because I’m not feeling the need to drink as much since it’s cooler outside.

Thanks, malibou. Definitely not an experience I hope to repeat, so I will be downing water as much as possible.

Your urologist sounds like a good guy. Luckily my er doc and all the nurses (in the er & hospital) were super helpful and weren't stingy with the morphine LOL. I can't even imagine trying to pass a 7! I bow to you.

FWIW My BIL had 3, each attack about a year apart. His doctor told him to get a gallon container and collect his urine each day. When he was peeing enough to create a gallon of urine--that was how much he needed to drink to keep a stone from forming. It did work for my BIL.
I just can't imagine how often one would be going to the bathroom to create that much urine. SMH
(but, would beat having a kidney stone)

Yay, glad things are going well. Feeling pretty good now too! I'll keep drinking that water too. I heard today of a man who had surgery for bladder stones and it was QUITE an ordeal. If we're looking on the bright side, we can be thankful ours didn't progress that far!
