We have to buy a new refrigerator and can’t decide. The price difference isn’t much. My husband and I can’t decide because we have no preference. We’ve always had it on the outside, but the sleek look of it being on the inside is tempting. Update: We ended up with this one: Fridge It has the water easily accessible and makes two kinds of ice. It also has a pitcher for water built in. The main reason ended up being I wanted flat front because of where it is in the kitchen I wanted to avoid the handles hitting the wall.

I voted outside - it seems awfully energy inefficient to let cold air out / warm air in the refrigerator. I can hear my mom yelling “close the refrigerator door!!!!” 🤣

I said the outside just because I wouldn't want to have to keep opening the door and let the cool air out, especially in summer. That's what my current fridge has but we don't use it. I have a water system (we have TERRIBLE water) and it has a drinking water dispenser at the sink and I have an ice machine on the counter. I wanted a French door fridge and at the time couldn't find one w/out water/ice. I guess I could work with the company that installed the water system to get a special 'thing' that would give enough pressure to the fridge so we could use the water/ice but the guy said it was expensive so I passed.

I'd vote inside. We have hard water and even running through the fridge filter, the black plastic of the water dispenser needs constant cleaning from white, lime buildup.

I've had ice on both the outside and inside and both have pro/cons. An outside dispenser - convenient but the ice maker doesn't hold as much and it is easy to run out on higher use days. Ice maker in the freezer - much more capacity, but you have to scoop it yourself.
I wouldn't have a water dispenser inside. In fact, I didn't even know something like that existed until last month when we had one in our VRBO in the Bahamas. The water dispenser flow wasn't very fast so it just felt like you were having to keep the door open for a long time.

I have too many condiments and need the shelf space inside the door so I do not prefer ice/water on the outside. Honestly, we have an inside water dispenser but don't use it - use a Britta instead.

I highly recommend you avoid GE! I have had so many problems with mine and am actually on my 3rd fridge in a year with a service appointment scheduled for another problem.
The techs have told me to avoid getting the ice in the refrigerator door models as they see many problems with those. Overall, they say they really only expect them to last about 5-7 years. Insane considering how much they cost and my last fridge was over 20 years old with the ice maker still working.

As a Realtor, I see so many water leaks that ruin floors from fridges that I do not recommend them.

Not only is the inside inefficient, it may mean multiple people are opening your fridge to get a drink. If you have people in and one wants a drink of water, it seems they would be more willing--and so would I as a host to invite them--to self serve water &/or ice from outside the fridge. Wouldn't always want them opening the door...

You didn't have an *other* option which would be my vote. We've never bought a refrigerator with the outside option and the last refrigerator we bought had an inside water line but we never hooked it up. As a Realtor, I see so many water leaks that ruin floors from fridges that I do not recommend them. Same with DH, that's why we don't have them. My sister once had a refrigerator water line leak 3 weeks after moving into a new home with lots of hardwood floors. They all had to be replaced.

Inside. Our current fridge has an outside dispenser for water & ice, but we don't have it hooked up.
When the kids were younger we had a working dispenser on the outside & it was often a mess in front because they weren't very good at being neat about using them. Plus, it never seemed to be able to keep up with the amount of ice we wanted. We could make ice in trays more efficiently. Then later on we started having issues with it, including leaking onto the floor.

NONE! They can leak water if not installed properly.
AND if you don't have a licenced plumber doing the work, your home insurance won't cover the mess that it causes as it was a "user error". It will cost you a lot of money and to install a water line if there isn't one can get expensive.
The less bells & whistles, the easier the possible repair bills will be.

I voted outside because that's what I'd LOVE to have!! LOL We have a special needs son and when we got our last fridge, he was still pretty young and I didn't want the hassle of teaching(and nagging!) him to leave it alone. LOL He is older now so I'd probably go with a "fancier" fridge next time.

Hate both, we have a water cooler instead.
Outside tends to get messy in the tray and sometimes drips down the refrigerator. I had kids at the time so that might be a me problem! We currently have one inside the refrigerator and it is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW to fill a glass of water. I wonder if this is common with inside water?!

We always get inside dispensers. I just like the look of the outside doors without the water and ice dispensers. That is all, nothing more to it. We've had ice water options in four refrigerators in three different houses and have never had a leak (knock on wood...)

When we had to buy a new fridge (when the kids were about 5 and 11) we opted for no water and just an ice maker in the freezer that dumped into a bin. My husbands aunt/uncle had the water and ice on the outside of their door and their grandkids were over and playing with it and it got stuck running water (the adults didn't know) and it wrecked their wood floors. Didn't want that happening! When we get a new fridge, I think I'll get the same, we use a brita pitcher or bottled water anyhow.

I have a large dog and clever cats so I prefer not to have dispensers on the outside. However, I am in the camp of neither. We have great tap water and don’t use a ton of ice so it’s not inconvenient to not have these features.

We had one with water on the inside, but no ice dispenser. It was a pain in the neck to use because not only do you have to open the door and let the cold air out, but it had a button you had to push with one hand while you held the glass with the other, so it necessitated both hands to even use. So inconvenient--totally canceled out any convenience of being able to get cold water from the fridge. Outside all the way.

I use a lot of ice every single day and have mine on the outside. I don't really care either way though, just as long as the freezer is making the ice for me and i don't have to use trays.

My brother's fridge has both.
Water and ice on the outside of the fridge, plus a small pitcher on the inside. You can stand there and fill your glass on the outside. Or you can open the door, grab the pitcher, fill the coffee pot and then when you put the pitcher back it fills itself so it's ready for the next time you need it. I love the setup.

Outside for us. The only issue we have had with ours, going on 15 years now, is that ice sometimes (rarely) gets stuck and has to be banged. My guess is that we leave the door open too long and it melts a tiny bit and then freezes back together. Definitely not something that would negatively affect our opinion when choosing a new one. We do get ice on the floor a bit, but that’s bad judgement on when to stop adding ice, I like mine full! So, user error.

Inside. It’s a cleaner look and you don’t loose the extra fridge space.
But, our tap water is great so we don’t use the inside dispenser. Just the ice from the freezer drawer.

Outside so you can save the energy of the fridge from letting warmer air in it and do it one handed. I didn’t know they had them on the inside.

At home our fridge has an in the drawer ice maker but no water dispenser. We have a separate 5 gallon jug water cooler so we mostly don’t need ice. At the lake we have a french door fridge with ice, crushed ice and water through the door and I LOVE it. I like my water ice cold and it’s so convenient especially when we have guests. Our neighbor at the lake has filtered water inside the refrigerator door with the little button you have to push to dispense the water and it’s a huge pain in the butt.

I have inside water and ice, and MUCH prefer it that way. It seems like outside water and ice is delicate and always breaking or leaking somehow. If I only had the choice of outside or nothing, I’d choose nothing.

When we had to get a new fridge just over a year ago, we opted for one with an inside water dispenser and ice maker - I REALLY prefer it that way. I wanted the french door style with the freezer on the bottom and did not want to give up precious door space for an ice-maker water dispenser combo on the outside door. So the water line is inside, but doesn't take up much space. The ice maker is in the top freezer drawer - large capacity & works great! (Yes, we still have to scoop it ourselves (oh the horror ) and I'm OK with that. I have a cute little ice scoop that sits at the edge of the bin.) The water dispenser is a little bit slow, but it's not a deal breaker. The fridge has a "turbo-blast chill" something or other that comes on when the door is open for longer than usual to counteract the warm air while it's open. We don't have little kids and if we needed a large amount of filtered water, I'd just pull out my Britta pitcher.

Ice inside the freezer, 👍🏻 I have that now, thought it was way weird when I saw it at first but now upon using it for a year, I like it better than the ice in the door that we used to have.
Water inside - terribly inconvenient 👎🏻 takes too long to fill, thus warming up the entire fridge bad idea.
Should be able to have water outside ice inside but that doesn’t seem available.

I prefer neither. Thankfully, the ice dispenser on our new fridge is low profile and doesnt take up precious freezer space. We use a Brita pitcher for water and when we need ice, we have a few trays of those giant cubes.

We don't have little kids and if we needed a large amount of filtered water, I'd just pull out my Britta pitcher. We got a Whirlpool French door refrigerator with freezer on the bottom, water and ice on the outside door for our lake cabin an few years ago and I don’t find the ice maker takes up much interior/ door space at all. Maybe half of one side? There is still space below it for cans or bottled things on two door shelves. The other side is all shelves that hold quite a bit. The interior of that fridge is HUGE compared to our similarly sized (exterior at least) SubZero at home which just has the ice maker in the bottom drawer freezer like yours. Even if the ice maker took up one whole side of the door, the inside capacity of the Whirlpool fridge more than makes up for it. Plus the interior shelves are adjustable so if you needed to refrigerate an extra tall bottle of something or a large tiered cake—no problem! Extra large pizza box? No problem. I can’t do any of that with the SubZero that came with the house and had to have cost ten times as much. I seriously love our Whirlpool fridge.
