When did this become a thing? I was genuinely startled the first time, but unfortunately talked to 3 different vets today (yeah send happy dog vibes my way as my guy is currently at the emergency vet). I just got off the phone with the very nice vet who apologized for the delay as he was dealing with a scared kiddo - makes 4 in a day - why?!?! just why?!?!? I adore my pet but cannot wrap my head around why someone thought kiddo was the new way to refer to one's pet.

Hmmm...I've seen a lot of vets the last couple of years and not one has said kiddo. That is odd they all 4 say it.

My vet doesn’t do this but everytime my groomer calls me when she’s finished she says, “the kids are ready.” It’s not as cute as she thinks it is.

So many people call their pets their kids (or some variation of it) that I think it has just transferred over to the people we entrust our pups with. My vet loves my dogs and I love that she gushes over my female (who does not love her). I guess it wouldn't bother me in the least. They are just letting you know that they know that you love your pets.

I think that’s sweet. “Dog” sounds so blah anyway. I use kiddo as a term of endearment so I would be okay with it.

If we run into more than one dog on our daily walks, I'll say "Hi, Kids!" in an exaggerated Southern accent. And no, I don't give two shits if the other owner thinks I'm weird. And obviously, the dogs don't care. darcy Collins, sending positive dog vibes your way. Hope your pup is on the mend soon.

I’m up way too late hoping for positive news / he’s looking at surgery in the morning if things don’t progress.

I've never had a vet say it but I've called my cat "kiddo" for years. It just started because my other cat was much older than him when I brought him home.

My favorite show right now is Critter Fixers on Nat Geo Wild. They call all the animals Baby. Doesn't matter if it is a kitten or a snake they are all Baby. Love it

Darcy Collins, I hope that your dog is on the mend and doesn’t need surgery. If he does, I hope that it goes smoothly!

My vets have always called my cats and dogs fur babies or furry kids and I appreciate that they consider them members of the family. One of the vets sees small domesticated farm animals (chickens, mini pigs) and I have heard those called chickie baby and piggy baby. I think it’s sweet!

That is bizarre. Pets are not children, they are animals. They could just as easily refer to the dogs as "pup" and cats as "kitty".

Never heard that. The closest I’ve heard is when they call him a goid boy.

I hope your sweet pup is doing better today. It wouldn’t have bothered me a bit for the vet to use loving nickname while caring for my sick girl.

Thanks for the sweet thoughts! I brought him home at 3 am. He passed his foreign object and avoided surgery. Will probably take another day or so for his system to really recover. Can I just say how in the world has the dog species survived? There were SO MANY dogs there who'd eaten something they shouldn't have - I mean my boy is not the bestest, but ROCKS - a poor lady there with a gorgeous chocolate lab had eaten rocks, they had little hope he'd avoid surgery.

That is bizarre. Pets are not children, they are animals. They could just as easily refer to the dogs as "pup" and cats as "kitty". While technically they aren't, we also call kids brilliant or genius and those aren't technically correct either. It is a term of endearment many people use it to be kind (or because they deal with so many pets in one day the cannot remember their names). I don't care what my vet/techs call my pets. As long as it is term that is positive. My vet is a husband and wife combo. I always hope I get the wife. She adores my breed of dog and cannot get enough of them.

I’m so happy to read that your dog was able to avoid surgery and is home safe now.
I’ve not had anyone use the term kiddo when referring to my dog. I do call him my pup, but he is almost 11 years old now so very far from a puppy. I think it comes from the fact that he is my first small dog. I have always had large breeds and when I was told I could not work any longer, I thought it was the perfect time to get a dog for company. But due to my age and health, I didn’t want a big breed again because I had been knocked down numerous times over the years by my big dogs. They would just get excited and jump up on me when I wasn’t braced for it and down I would go. I figured I would be a small dog owner from now on. So in comparison to my large breeds, he looks like a pup.

In the light of day, I see the irony that kiddo threw me, but I refer to him as my sweet boy all the time which isn't much different.

Where I lived before “kids” was common to refer to pets. Where at live now the vet asks for “Lola’s mom”.
I find both odd to be honest.

I have never had a vet call our pets kiddo. I don't even call kids kiddo, so I'm glad it is not used by our vet.

He had a lot of degrees and I think he liked to lord that over people and maybe kiddo was a way of feeling superior. Not sure.

Glad he's doing well.
My current vet's office used to call all the animals baby. The first time I took my pet there the receptionist asked me "do you have the baby?" I legitimately didn't know what she was talking about - I thought maybe she confused me with someone who had an actual human baby. All the receptionists said it, so I guess it was a clinic choice. It was very weird, but I eventually got used to it. They stopped saying it sometime around the beginning of the pandemic and I don't miss it.
