Hi everyone! I'm hoping that the board will not eat my post today! I am going on my first vacation since I became single over three years ago! I leave for Ottawa, Ontario to visit a childhood friend for five days on Friday ... yay!!!! My girlfriend and I have known each other since we were in grade three but have not lived in the same city since grade seven ... we have kept in touch all these years which is totally amazing ... I was her MOH at her first wedding when we were in our 20's and she was mine in 1997 at my wedding in Las Vegas ... she came to visit when Emma was a baby and we haven't seen each other in person since ... she's now with a second husband and I'm divorced and my dd's are grown! She lives on an acreage in the woods about 2.5 hours from Ottawa ... it is going to be hot, humid and buggy! We are going to hit some towns with shops and restaurants, go for a massage one day and spend my last day there touring Ottawa ... the rest of the time we will just relax and catch up ... she has a young pug and two rescue cats ... should be a lot of fun! This will be my first time on a plane since my wedding in 1997 ... I will admit that I am nervous because I don't know WTH I'm doing. I have bought so many things to make my trip fun: - larger Economy seat - Air Canada lounge access - AirPods so that I can watch videos on my phone - AirTag for my suitcase - packing cubes for my suitcase - contraption that lets me attach my phone to the armrest or tray table - stuff to survive the Ontario summer: hat, bug spray, sunscreen - "indoor shoes" because Malcolm the Pug "eats toes". - shoes to go dog walking (I don't own such things!) *I'm sure there is more! I booked my Uber to take me to the airport on Friday ... getting so excited! This is what I posted on Facebook today ... I hope I don't over pack! I'm leaving soon to meet my mum and Emma for breakfast and then Emma is coming over to help me set up my printer and AirPods ... No idea what I'll do for the remainder of the day! I get my Hello Fresh delivery today so dinner will probably be something from that ... my mum might come over ... What are your plans today? What is on your menu? Have a relaxing Sunday everybody!

Hi Everyone, leannec How exciting to be able to go visit your girlfriend. That meme is totally me when I travel or my family travels for vacation. Our famous words on every trip is “I think we packed to much.” Yesterday, I did some cleaning and binge watched “Your Dead to Me”. I am now starting season 2 and it’s pretty interesting. Last night dinner was rotisserie chicken (the boys made into tacos) I ate plain and fries. Today YDS is making DH breakfast for Father’s Day. I am going to make some cards clean the kitchen and do some laundry. Dinner tonight is up in the air. I have to ask everyone. I hope all of you have a peaceful day.

Wow leannec your trip sounds like so much fun! And I love that you've kept in contact all this time. Back in the days before internet that had to be tough too. She must truly be a special friend. Happy travels. Be safe. I was going to paint the walls in my dining room. But I've decided I want to have fun today instead and the dining room can wait until next weekend. I'm working on a shawl and I think I want to just do that today. I just got off the phone with my dad so I'm going to shower and put on something comfy. I also picked up two new cookbooks at the library yesterday so I'll be checking them out too. We will just have rechauffe today. There's plenty of ribs and macaroni and cheese left.

That sounds like a great trip leannec. Your meme is DH. He packs four shirts for every day. I’m a light packer. And a last minute packer. Maybe that’s why I don’t pack a lot. Have fun making your cards destined2bmom. I hope to get some scrapbooking done today. I’m thinking along the same lines as you today jeremysgirl. I got up and thought I would wash windows. I’ve since lost that desire. Yesterday was busy but a fun day. DH and I got up early and drove an hour and a half south to go hiking. Got back to town and hit up two baseball games for one of the grandsons. Ended up bringing three of them home with us. The fourth joined us later after his games ended. They all spent the night. I’ve cleaned up after them, taken a walk and cleaned the kitchen. DH doesn’t want to do anything today so it’s going to be a quiet day. I’m sure all of the kids will stop by at some point. Dinner is rechauffe. Have a relaxing day, everyone!

Your vacation sounds like great fun, leannec . It's nice to hear that you're gonna go play for a few days w/your dear friend. Woohoo. I have a curbside pickup at Home Depot for dh and then a curbside grocery pickup. I'll go in an hour. Apart from that I need to tidy up my office and then I hope do do a hobby something. Yds is leaving for school in the early eve and has requested chicken mozzarella pasta to eat when he gets back to his apartment. I will make it in the late afternoon. destined2bmom , I really enjoy Dead to Me. I need to watch the final season. jeremysgirl , I hope that you'll just spend today doing things that make you feel good.
Just read the tail end of yesterday's thread. scrappintoee, that you took the time to design that tshirt really touched me and it also made me laugh.
sueg, that's a very interesting story about your sil's parents. That was a very sad way to end up in Australia. What a story! Enjoy today everyone.

leannec: Safe travels. It’s not too hot here in Ontario yet, which is great. The friend I went to the Dog Festival yesterday has been my bestie for exactly 50 years. I was 7 and in grade 2 when we met. We see each other every week for a walk, bike ride or shopping trip. I got a phone call last night from a local pet store saying that I won a door prize from the event yesterday. I picked up my bag of dog food this morning. I’m not interested in changing Walkers food but I can use it for treats while we are walking. Maybe he will listen better! Having a chill day with DH. We might see the boys at some point today but one is working and the other is pretty unpredictable! Supper will be whatever DH wants.

Happy Sunday, everyone! We celebrated with Jess and the boys yesterday, and Nick's main present, the sentimental one, us yet to arrive, so we are having a quiet day. I think we are going by the RV place to window shop. We are still looking for a project instead of something new so it's really just to get a feel for size (and you know, if we win the lottery!). We had a wonderful day yesterday...a great visit, then we went in to Chicago and visited a couple music stores, Williams-Sonoma for me (spent way to much! Snoopy pancake molds! Fancy BBQ sauce, a gorgeous molded loaf pan and a gourmet mix. I am making a basket with something yummy, a new mug and a book for his daughter as she is ready to set up a little backyard spot to read and enjoy morning coffee.), and then a nice little Greek place for dinner. He has had a really good Father's day. I will probably text my father later.
We have burgers to grill later. We also have plenty of rechauffe. An easy day today!

leannec , your trip sounds fabulous. DH and I went for a walk at Town Center and we loved how they did the patriotic bunting this year. Also walked through the Farmer's Market. Came home and marinated a Tri-tip roast for dinner. Giant's shut out the Dodgers 15-0 last night so DH is a happy camper! Pictures from Town Center:

They have concerts on a bandstand by the lake at the other side from where we are standing. (There are 4 lakes total) Great restaurants, my gym, fun shops and a Regal cinema.

I think we’re having ham for dinner. I suggested scalloped potatoes for a side but ds vetoed that idea. Whatever it is will be simple or cooked by someone else.
I’ve had a rough day. I’m missing Dick and my Dad and feeling so sad that my kids don’t have their Dad.

I’m missing Duck and my Dad and feeling so sad that my kids don’t have their Dad. I’m sorry, Kellee. ❤️ If I had a vote I would not have vetoed scalloped potatoes- I love them. Especially with ham. leannec have a great time with your old friend - sounds like a special time. This morning I helped out in the toddler nursery at church for my scheduled week. Love being with the toddlers and giving their parents a small break. Dh is at the graduation of a relative (on a Sunday is weird to me!). I’m making a pork roast for dinner- just about to put in in the oven to slow roast all day. Will also do mashed potatoes. I have carrots, too, but haven’t decided how to cook them. I love raw carrots but cooked aren’t my fav- will look up some recipes and see if anything inspires me.

KelleeM, I'm so sorry that today is hard for you. Big hugs. From yesterdays' thread: It was a spinach salad. I toasted some pecans first. Let them cool. I used baby spinach and chèvre (crumbled),local strawberries and balsamic glaze. It looks beautiful, too. Our local strawberries are ready and they are wonderful. This is similar to my salad except I also have sugar snap peas, grilled chicken, bleu cheese crumbles instead of goat cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette. Perfect summer-time fare!

Dinner tonight is at a friend's house and we are each bring a few things to nosh on (3 of us getting together). We usually do some sort of charcuterie board-style dinner when we get together. I'm bringing some fresh cut fruit, cookies, and cheese & crackers. We're celebrating the host's birthday and we haven't seen each other in a while due to our busy lives taking over this spring.
DH & DS are making plans to go out to dinner together.
I am missing my Dad greatly today...sigh. It's going to be like that. DH has been wonderful and understanding...listens when I need to talk, hugs me when I can't talk or tear up. He lost his dad to cancer in 2011. We both miss him too.

I think I am making wings and pork bites. Dessert will be local strawberries with Cointreau and whipping cream. Yay! Our strawberries are ripening so quickly that I need another smoothie to eat the up. I might have one now even! I use some frozen to freeze the smoothie (malt) and fresh for flavour.

I am trying to motivate myself to go out and walk. I got 12,000 steps yesterday and 2,800 today. I just cannot motivate myself to go. We are watching the US Open. My dad says this is his Father’s Day present to himself.

Good morning from a miserable, rainy Melbourne Monday. I spent yesterday afternoon with my sister and niece. We had lunch at a nice Japanese restaurant. It was all you can eat, but not a buffet - you ordered individual dishes, and could order as many as you wanted, and they cooked for you. It works really well as everything is fresh cooked, and less waste as people order 3 or 4 small dishes at a time, then order more if they want, rather than overloading plates because they can. Dinner was with my other sister and her DH - leftover ratatouille from earlier in the week with grilled chicken breasts. I just had a message from DS that he doesn't want to take Lucia to library storytime this morning, as we had planned, because she is sick and the weather is horrible. So I will pick up Sophia, take her to storytime, then on into the city to the aquarium. I am glad we decided on aquarium rather than the zoo! leannec - your vacation sounds fun. Don't stress about the plane trip - it will all be very clear at the airport what you need to do. I am now a fairly seasoned solo traveller, including at airports where I don't speak the local language, and I have always found my way. scrapmaven - it was my grandparents and dad who came to Australia as war interns. I am sometimes amazed at how life just works out sometime - without this, I might not exist! KelleeM and others missing loved ones this Fathers Day - big hugs to you all, and be gentle with yourself.

leannec ....Oh, how FUN! It's awesome you've been friends this long---you'll have a BLAST! And I LOL over the little pug that eats toes! taylortroop and scrapmaven ....I love to hear of long-time friendships! I'm still friends with a gal from Kindergarden and 3 close friends from 8th grade. It's unfortunate we're all spread out over the country. KelleeM ...Many (( hugs )) to you! scrappinwithoutpeas ...Many (( hugs )) to you, too! I FINALLY cooked REAL food today! Even though DH bugs me about how cooking/cleaning will cause me more pain, I enjoy it so much, it's worth it. I started remembering happy memories of my Dad, and how EXCITED he got over my cooking, then the tears flowed. Although I had horrible, visceral reactions to his quick temper, (which was just him yelling / cussing when he dropped things, had trouble with his walker, etc) he was also mostly ALWAYS cheerful, funny, and kind. I feel some guilt about getting mad at him when he'd slam the microwave, or close a door too loudly. That's why I say him moving in with us pretty much ruined our relationship. ANYHOOOO..... When I tell y'all my Dad was FUN, I am not exaggerating! Being silly with my brother (they were imitating someone in our family who got WAYYY too excited about sharing desserts).

Have a wonderful trip leannec , I bet there will be a lot of laughs! I spent all Sunday afternoon cooking. DD and her partner came for dinner. I'd asked DD if she had any special requests, and she wanted Marion's Thai Spicy Basil & Pork Belly Stir-fry, but neither of us have any Thai basil left, and the grocer didn't have any either. ( jeremysgirl can you send me some of yours? ) So I made one of our other favourites, Crispy Honey Chilli Beef (plus the same using chicken for DD) with coconut rice. I also tried two new dishes, which turned out to be a lot of effort for not much return. Chilli Crisp Noodles - It uses two tablespoons of sesame paste, which I think is way too much. Even though I usually love dishes with sesame oil and sesame paste, it was overpowering. I even had to make my own chilli crisp because I didn't have any, so it was extra annoying when I threw the noodles out. All that time and effort! Vietnamese Flan Cake - This was also a lot of effort making the three separate components. It turned out quite well, but I'm not sure that I'd bother again, it took so long. Good morning from a miserable, rainy Melbourne Monday. Isn't it bloody miserable?! I start work in 23 minutes and I'm still in bed! It was such a lovely sunny (albeit cold) weekend too. DSO works with my brother every Monday (lawnmowing and industrial garden maintenance) but it's too wet for them to work today. ETA: It's not Father's Day here until September.

KelleeM, scrappintoee and others missing someone today, sending hugs to you. Yesterday we went to Half Moon Bay for the day and for dinner. It was lovely. Today I'm baking a cherry pie which I haven't made in some time. There used to be a place in Sunnyvale where I would buy at least 10# of Royal Ann cherries and they were just the best for pie but they sold that land and now it's just developed. Todays pie is half Bing and half Ranier. Hopefully it will turn out well. Difficult with my wrist to do. But it's a favorite for DH. He went searching for porterhouse steaks this week and finally found some. So tonight will be that, baked potatoes, asparagus and mushrooms. His favorite meal.

Today I'm baking a cherry pie which I haven't made in some time. Aww...cherry and mincemeat were Dad's favorites. We always teased him about liking mincemeat, saying it tasted like pot-pourri. I googled Half Moon Bay...omg...gorgeous! I am dyyyying to visit California again, and be near WATERRRR !!! I've loved every city we've visited in Cali, and would love to live there! ntsf...I hope your friend improves. destined2bmom...same with your friend. lucyg... Sending you pre-chemo (( hugs ))
