I don't. I had to write one the other day and had to think about how to write out the amount.
I'm in charge of a women's group where members can pay dues online or write a check. One of the officers gripes all the time about the credit card fees we pay and we shouldn't have "all this online stuff." I'm trying to make her see that checks are going away and online signups much easier for everybody. We can see all our online signups and contact information in an app vs. collecting the checks and compiling a list manually on someone's computer.
Am I wrong? This woman and her friends are driving me around the bend.
Edited to clarify: We don't pass the credit card fees on to members. The organization pays them and the dues remain the same.

Yup! When I give money to an organization as well as paying rent. I am not paying a damn fee on top of rent.

Yes, I still write a few. Mostly to church and to put in the mail with birthday cards.

Only for our lawn guy, who refuses to use an online payment service, but he's worth it. Rarely for other things. Like I recently had to get replacement license plates, and was surprised to find that our county with a population of over 4 mil doesn't have a way to order those online. You have to fill out a form and mail it in with a check, or go to the county assessor's office in person. I even had to go buy stamps because I can't remember the last time I sent anything via snail mail. Ridiculous! This is 2023.
RE:rent - we pay our college daughter's rent online with an e-check. No fee and I don't have to physically write or mail anything.

Yes, to a few places. Church, school property taxes (sure not paying a fee on that amount!) are the ones I write most often. An organization DH belongs to can't seem to figure out online payments so I write one check a year to them. ETA: Merge - So you pay your property taxes online? County allows you to do electronic check now for no fee, but SBISD still charges a credit card fee as well as an e-check fee. The office is close to me and has a drive through window so every December I write a check and drive through.

I still write a few. For car registration as I don’t want to pay an extra fee, I used to for school things (pta and such) but don’t have those anymore. I also use them if I shop at Winco and don’t have cash since they don’t take credit cards. I pay our bills online so electronic checks.
I hate writing checks so I am happy I don’t have to write them often.

Yes. Our handyman only takes checks. And there are other one-of times like when we had some furniture delivered. I use Venmo more now for things I used to write checks.

school property taxes (sure not paying a fee on that amount!) I was thrilled when our county started letting us use e-checks. The fee is 75¢.

We do for county wide volunteer group stuff. They only take checks. They don't want to keep cash in office, not set up for cards.
Also pay taxes with checks. They charge $5ish fee for cards.

I still write checks for property taxes, license plate registration fees, and I used to write them to the schools for AP tests or trips.
I agree that online is easier. But why don't you accept ACH payments in addition to credit card payments? I think it's pretty common to pass the cc fees onto the payer, not absorb them.

Yes, at least one a month to the HOA. They messed up our auto payments twice, so we no longer trust them. And then we write checks if we are charged a credit card fee like for property taxes and the DMV. I don’t carry a check book around with me though. It stays at home.

I write one check a year - to pay my property taxes.
It is hundreds of dollars cheaper to write a check than to pay with a card because they charge you a % of your thousands of dollars tax bill to pay with a card.
That is also the one time a year I use a stamp and the one time of the year I go to the post office.

For our business I still do write some cheques every month. Most I pay online through my bank. I receive a few still also, most are direct deposit.
One company just has the amount typed in numbers. $638.47 in the written area and then $638.47 in the number area. Not six hundred thirty eight and they always go through.
It's been years since I wrote a personal cheque and those were once a year to the school. It's probably been 20 years since I've written cheques. I just use etransfer now.

We still have some things we pay with paper checks. For smaller businesses like ours, we try to pay with cash when we can. Now having said that, credit card fees for small businesses and organizations are INSANE and can add up to a huge expense annually. Last year we were informed that the processing fees DH was being charged would go up to 4% of every transaction. He is in a service business and people would routinely whip out a credit card to pay without even a second thought, I would say about 60-75% of his clients paid that way. When we added up the annual cost of the fees even before the fees were raised it was staggering. 😬
Yeah, NO. He immediately started telling people there would be a 4% convenience fee added if they wanted to pay by card (either credit or debit), or they could pay with a check or cash for no added cost, basically passing that expense on to only the clients who chose to go that route. Now most clients pay by check which costs us nothing extra to process and which saves us literally thousands of dollars a year. We deposit the checks electronically so we don’t even have to take them to the bank.
The reality is if most people chose to pay by card by default we would be forced to raise our rates across the board to offset that cost and then it affects EVERYONE regardless of how they pay vs. just the people who are consciously choosing to pay that way. We felt that giving people the option to choose a lower cost payment type that would also benefit them was the all around fairest way to go.

We accept Paypal, Venmo, and Zelle. We don't want to discourage online signups by passing on the fee. It's so much easier to consolidate data if we don't have to do it by hand.

Very seldom. Probably because I refuse to deal with using Venmo. Usually once a year things, like medical bills or the guy who does the gutters.

Occasionally. Usually for school things (add money to my lunch account, camps/sports/etc for ds) and almost always at Costco bc we don’t have a debit card or Visa card (we use discover & Amex). That’s pretty much it, I go thru maybe a book a year, if that.

Yes. Rent charges $19+ fees to pay online, my envelope and stamp. Gas company charges $3.75 to pay online, I use their envelope and a Forever stamp. I pay DMV $1.50 for registration online, worth it not to worry about it getting through the mail.
All else is paid on line. Oh wait, forgot the Christmas and birthday checks to DIL and DGSs.

I write checks when there's a "convenience fee" for using a credit card. I'm so very over the fee for this and fee for that.
My DD's new gym charges a credit card payment fee. I can pay cash, check, or Zelle and avoid the fee... her gym is $210/mo.
DMV charges a fee to pay online with credit but say that they prefer you to pay that way.
Our water company charges a fee to pay online with credit card.
The gas company charges a fee to pay online and if you use an e-check!!!
WTF? You'd think they would PREFER online payment so they don't have to process it and all that crap. It's all done electronically. I'm just over it.

I got stuck on this sentence. But yeah, I write one check to my gardener every month. Every year I ask if he has switched to online, and every year he says no. Everything else is online. My property tax and car registration are paid with ACH (enter routing # and account #). If I want to use a credit card, I’ll have to pay a fee.

She does competitive gymnastics- 6 hours a week- we drive 45 min ONE WAY for this 2 days a week That's the monthly cost ON TOP of the $2440 we pay for meets ($300x5 not including state or regional which are another $300 each), coach fees, uniform, leotard ($200) choreography ($200), music etc. THEN we get to pay to TRAVEL to the meets on our own dime PLUS admission to the meets per person usually $15 each. Competitive gymnastics is NOT cheap!
