So, my iPad fell off the table while it was plugged in and the charger broke off right where it connects inside the iPad. I can see the little piece in there but can't reach it with anything. My dh is going to give it a try later with his hobby tools, but if he can't get it out I scheduled an appointment withe the Genius Bar for tomorrow.... because surely I'm not the first this has happened to? lol. But...if they can't fix it then I guess I'm in the market for a new iPad. I looked on Amazon and it seems that the 10th generation is the latest, and the price difference between 9th and 10th is significant. Honestly, the only things I use it for are playing games, and reading the occasional ebook that doesn't have a Kindle format. That's it. I know I could do those things on my phone but the phone's screen is too small for these old eyes to see easily. So can I assume that for my games and books I do not necessarily need the latest model? Or do I? Those of you who know technology please help me out. I'm sure that if the Genius person can't fix it they'll want to sell me one right then and there, and I'm assuming they have only the latest models in the store... Thanks.

It should be fixable—I’ve seen hacks where you melt the end of a glue stick and pull it out, but I’d leave it to the experts rather than get glue in the port!
Normally I say to buy the most up to date model because Apple products last so long, but you make a compelling case for the older model. Whatever I get, I’d make sure that the pencil charges on the side, rather than in the charging port. I really hate the old charging method!

I have and would again get the last refurbished model. It’s cheaper and you get the same exact warranty.

I’ve had that happen twice and took it to a local computer shop where they used a magnet to get the piece out. And they wouldn’t let me pay them either. 😊

Shop for iPad. Scroll to the VERY bottom of the page (don't choose a model, just scroll). Beneath "APPLE STORE" CLICK: Certified Refurbished ***Now, if you find something buy it! They only have a limited number of items to sell and when it's gone it's gone. I just looked....there are quite a few iPads on the site.

If your DH didn't get it out, and the Genius Bar didn't fix it - take it to an independent cell phone fix-it shop. IMO, the Genius Bar wants you to buy new. A good reputable repair shop is more on your side.

If you belong to Costco, check there. The prices are very competitive and I believe they tack an extra year onto the manufacturer’s warranty. And if you use a Costco Visa card you’ll get the rebate for that too making it even cheaper in the long run.

They go fast on the web site. You can't tell that they aren't brand new.

I bought an iMac this way (it was just used for crafting as a second computer) lasted me another 10 years or so and was only retired as there no more updates available. I would buy another product from Apple when needed.

I got the 5th gen Air for Mother's Day for digital planning and general games, and it's perfect for what I do. SO paid full price from Best Buy but that's because he's scared to buy refurbed. (He won't listen to me so whatever.) Unless you're looking for the smaller version, I love this one.
