Is there a dog DNA kit that you recommend? I want to get my ds one for his birthday. He and his dog Shay rescued each other.

I have only heard of it being done by a veterinarian.

We used this one....the results are amazing! Our border aussie is: Border Aussie Shepherd and a lot of other breeds! Wisdom DNA
They email the results and I think mailed them too. You have to swab the inside of their cheeks prior to them eating any food. We did it in the morning. It was very easy to do and very easy to mail the swabs in.

I got mine from Amazon, Embark. It gives a breed profile and you can also check for possible medical conditions but I opted not to do that part.
It was pretty neat--my dog turned out to be quite a mix of things, several of which I would not have expected.

We used Embark and it showed breeds that we actually could see in our pup. I was gifted the Wisdom kit for my birthday and it actually missed the most prominent characteristic in our pup and added a couple that were so not him! I brought the results to the vet and asked we thought and he said Embark is the most accurate in his experience.

This is a recent article from Whole Dog Journal discussing experiences with some of the leading dog DNA kits. I have found Whole Dog Journal to be a fantastic resource and trust their advice. Dog DNA Tests - Whole Dog JournalThey say that Embark was the winner!

We did one with Embark where we did it ourselves at home. The vet recommended that brand. But we were really surprised, we thought our dog was pit bull mix with lab or great dane. He was pretty big, 84 pds and reminded us of my brother's great dane. But it said he was 70% pit bull, 20% chow chow and the rest super mutt. I wanted to do another one, but they are expensive.
Our neighbors used wisdom and the vet did it.

We did Wisdom for each of our dogs. We were given 100% totals for our two, with no “breed group” findings.

I used embark on my two since they are both rescues (we got them at different times). With Mr. Max, he has deformed back legs so I wanted to know about any possible genetic conditions. We got him when he was three and he and his brother were rescued from a home that seemed neglected/abandoned. She looked like those Sarah MacLachlan animal commercials. It’s been almost five years since we got him and I still cry when I see those photos. We had no idea what breed(s) he was. embark is more expensive but it doesn’t limit the breeds it can identify.
When lil Miss Gracie cal]me into our lives it was mid-pandemic and I was trying to work with rescues to place her as I never had two dogs and wasn’t sure if I wanted to get into that. Well, she was a foster fail and so I wanted to find out about her as well. I used the same company.
They did identify that Max has an increased risk for intravertabral disc disease and has an abnormal variant (recessive) for three other diseases. He’s also 3.47% super mutt and has more wolf type DNA (2.0%) than other dogs.
For Gracie, the test turned up a sibling. I ended up contacting her owner and found out that Gracie’s sister was adopted from a humane society in the county Gracie was found in January of 2021. Gracie followed my daughter and her dog to their home; she was dodging traffic on a busy street, had no collar and was not chipped. Knowing a bit about her sibling and when she was adopted leads us to believe Miss Gracie was on her own for at least six months. It explains her reaction to groups of dogs and why she gets under the covers in bed. She’ll also climb under the bed on warmer nights. It makes her feel safe.

We used Embark, and I know a lot of people use the Wisdom brand. I got Embark on Amazon. We were happy with the results, they seemed spot-on.

We used Wisdom for one of our dogs (still need to do the other). We were told the one was a shih tzu rescued from a backyard breeder situation. But she has a very large frame and is very long for a shih tzu so we were suspect. Turns out she is 100% pure bred shih tzu.
Our other was found on the streets of Detroit wandering around. We were told they believed she is a shih tzu/maltese mix. I believe that but dh thinks she's also 100% shih tzu. We want to check but she does NOT like anything being put in her mouth and is extremely high strung. One day we'll do it...

What we thought was a lab/newfie cross turned out to be maremma sheepdog, labrador retriever, rottweiler mix! We swabbed his cheek, put it in the tube and mailed it off. About 5 weeks later we had our results in an online portal that showed us his DNA mix, plus any features he was more likely to have. Super cool!

We used Wisdom for our one dog 9 years ago. Now I would go with Embark and still want to with our other two. I just feel like Embark has a better grasp on the DNA of dogs currently.
