I just saw the ad for Google’s new foldable phone that is about the size of a larger IPhone, but then flips open to be twice the size, more like a small iPad. While I can certainly see the appeal of a phone like this, I was surprised at the price -$1,800. I can see how the bigger screen would be great for older people and those with diminished vision. I just bought the latest iPhone 14, paying almost $1,000. I don’t replace my phone very often. The last phone I bought was an iphone 5, so I don’t feel too terribly bad about paying the grand because I know this is going to last me for many years to come. And I only replaced it because the battery wouldn’t hold a charge for more than a couple of hours. And since I am new to Oregon, I need to use the map feature to locate pretty much everything and get directions to it. My phone didn’t allow for that so I had to replace it. I should also say that I don’t make many phone calls so I’m not that dependent on one but had to have the new one to survive here in Oregon. I will also admit that when I was working, I did replace my phone every year or two to get the latest and greatest. But when I stopped working, it was just no longer a priority for me. Would you pay $1,800 for a smart phone? Or maybe I should ask what is the most you would consider paying for a phone? I suppose if the Google phone was purchased instead of buying a phone and small iPad, the price doesn’t sound as extreme. Disclaimer, I haven’t seen one in person. www.verizon.com/smartphones/google-pixel-fold/?sku6000880&cmp=CSE-C-HQ-NON-R-AC-NONE-NONE-2C0PX0-PX-PLA-GA03810-US&cmp=CSE-C-Mobility-NON-R-PMX-NONE-NONE-2K0VZ0-COE-GAW-14727&kpid=go_cmp-20288531742_adg-_ad-__dev-c_ext-_prd-GA03810-US_sig-CjwKCAjw-vmkBhBMEiwAlrMeF-qT01j0IszuiuwO15sQ7SlGQ4X_rK-iP4E-IVc-01FqhDsnpfMYShoCXegQAvD_BwE&gclid=CjwKCAjw-vmkBhBMEiwAlrMeF-qT01j0IszuiuwO15sQ7SlGQ4X_rK-iP4E-IVc-01FqhDsnpfMYShoCXegQAvD_BwE

Would you pay $1,800 for a smart phone? No. Although I am sure one day, they will all be that much or more. As far as paying $1,000 for your iPhone 14, the way I look at it, we are paying not just for a phone but basically for a computer. I mean it is a phone, organizer, calculator, camera and computer all rolled into one. When you look at it that way, I guess $1,000 isn't too bad.

Nope. I am rocking an iPhone 7 that I got for $200. My 11 year old bought her own iPhone 13 in December 2022 for $180 (AT&T $5/mo payment plan). I will NEVER pay that much for a phone.
I just bought a new MacBook M2 14" and it was $2200. I use it less than my phone but it does so much more on a much larger screen.
I hate the thought of needing to get a new iPad. That cost will be ridiculous IMO too.
That said- we use our devices until they absolutely die.

I'm WAY too cheap to consider paying that much. My first iphone was a 6S and I paid $100-ish for it and DH picked up our current phones on Black Friday to replace it for I think $199 each - iphone 11.

Never. The max I have ever been willing to spend is $400. And for that amount I've had some phones that are perfectly suited for my needs with decent cameras and they last for several years. I'm not much of a phone person and I just have no desire for the latest and greatest, just give me something small and lightweight at an affordable price.

No, I won’t pay that much. But then again who thought I would pay $1K for a phone. I have a 12 Plus. I used to upgrade my phone every two years when Verizon had their Every 2 Years Free plan. Miss those years! Now, I keep my phone for about 3-4 years. I bought this one on Apple’s credit plan - 2 years with no interest. So it is fully paid off now. I upgrade my phone now if the camera gets a significant upgrade.

I've learned (the hard way at times) to never say never. I got my driver's license and first car in 1972 and remember when gas prices started to increase. I said "I will never pay 50 cents a gallon for gas!" HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That phone is basically a computer. I think $1000 phones are here to stay though. The good thing is we can choose when to get a new one. I'm had my Samsung Note 20 for almost 3 years now. I'll likely keep it at least one more year. Maybe more. We'll see.

A quick look on Telus' site show these prices, in Canadian: Samsung Galaxy Z fold 4 is worth $2805. S22 Ultra $2040. iPhone 14 Pro max $1593.
A Galaxy S23 is $1360 which is what I would upgrade to if I was getting a new phone today. The plans hurt as much as the phone prices.

No way would I pay $1800 for a phone. I had the IPhone 6 but when Sprint merged with AT&T I was forced to upgrade to an 11. It was a feee upgrade and I’ll keep this one until it dies.

That’s an expensive phone! I couldn’t ever see spending that much. I’m much too cheap. Ha.
I usually keep my phones the minimum of 4 yrs. The retail price has, of course, gone up exponentially over the years. Same phone options, but each time a higher retail price. My latest phone (iPhone 13 Pro) was about $1000. However, I never pay full retail, because I trade in my previous phone and only buy when Verizon has really good deals going on. So my iPhone 13 Pro ended up costing me under $400. We put the interest free payments on our phone bill and pay over time. It’s pretty painless.
As a side note, I’d still have my iPhone X if it hadn’t decided to overheat and overall start to act all wonky. I seriously would have kept that phone forever because loved it so much - and it was paid for!

Add me to the list of never say never.
Back in the day a great car payment was $150 a month. I couldn't get my first car for that. My first payment was $196 and I thought I was doing good.
So as time marches on prices March up!

Would you pay $1,800 for a smart phone? I would never say never but I got a bit lucky this time ... I'm in Canada ... My contract was up and so I got an iPhone 14 for "free" with my new plan ... I'm still paying through the nose! Dd#2 (age 20) just bought the same phone for $1200 CAD ... phones definitely are like small computers!

I too keep my phones for years. Which is why I want the most current model when I do replace it, whatever the cost. And the cost is offset by the fact that I don’t use a regular computer at all anymore, only my phone and iPad. All that said, I’m not interested in a Google phone period (Apple girl through and through), let alone one that costs $1800. I got my current one in December 2021 for hundreds less than my original 2010 model. And the one before my current one was some sort of deal from Comcast that only cost me $120 ($5/month for two years). New, not refurbished. I think it was not the latest model, but it worked fine for 3-4 years.

No way. I would get a refurbished slightly older phone. I keep a phone as long as I can.

An $1800 is not a phone aimed at everyone. It is for a niche group. No most people won't pay that much for a phone. I wouldn't buy that phone as it isn't something that I would need/want to spend that much on for a phone.
I'm on my second Google phone (Pixel 6), you can pry it from my cold dead hands. Zero interest in an iPhone.

I too will use my phone until it basically dies, so this last time when I upgraded I went for the newest one at the time which was the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I also don’t cheap out on the memory either, I always get the one with the most memory. Made that mistake way back in the day when I bought an iPod and quickly regretted not getting one with more storage space.

I guess? If that's what it takes. I don't like the way prices have risen so steeply, but I need a phone that can run all the apps I need for my hobby "business" , my job, and keeping the two organized. It's not really optional for me to use a cheap phone that can't do everything I need it to do. I know my S21 was pricey and I'll need a new one when this one gives up (so far so good though). I have to have GPS to function and I need the phone for research, bookkeeping, organization, sourcing, time tracking, photography, advertising, editing, creating labels and content, I could go on and on. Obviously I use a computer for some things but my phone is invaluable.

I've never paid that much for a laptop. I've owned 2 smartphones and they have each been under $300. I can talk, text, take photos, get directions, listen to audiobooks and look up stuff online. What more do I need?

For me, it isn’t the price that is the issue. The flip part is just asking for problems. It’s the Achille’s heel of that phone. Why choose something that has such a vulnerability?
Do they still have the to the edge screens? That one was really cool! Too vulnerable if it were accidentally dropped.
I want a sturdy case protecting my phone.
At present, I have a Samsung S20 that is paid for. As long as it continues to work nicely, I will continue to use it. When it needs to be replaced, what needs to be done will be done.

Nope…. won’t pay that much. But I only use my phone (2020 SE IPhone, cost around $200) for texts, calls and camera. I use my IPad for everything else. SE is still working fine, (probably just put a jinx on it by saying this!) hoping to get another year or two out of it w/Straightalk.

No. Nope. Hell no. I wait for the previous version to go on sale when the new version drops and pay no more than $300.
My Samsung Galaxy was on sale for $189.

I got my latest for free, minus taxes. It is the iphone 14 pro I just had to turn in my old phone. Every now and then there are deals, because nope, I would not pay that much for a phone anymore. I think I paid 800 for my last one, so this was nice to come across. My friend has the foldable phone, I think she got it on a deal also, but it doesn't look sturdy to me.

IMO phones are like cars just cuz you wouldn't buy it doesn't mean no one would. There are many cars over 100k. No way would I buy one, but doesn't mean no one would. I'm just not their clientele.

You get what you pay for. I tend to go pro on my iPhones. I like bigger and more memory. For me, as much as I use my phone….I’d pay it. No different than a good mattress or coffee maker. Something cheaper does the job, but l want quality.

If you need a larger size for visual reasons and already have a newer phone, it's might be a better deal to get an iPad with cell service and use that as needed.
