I am going to post in GS too.
My inlaws are selling one of their houses and asked if we wanted their photo albums. We are talking about maybe 12-15 very large 1970s and 80s sticky albums.
What if anything do I do at this point? The photos have been in the albums for 35-50 years--do I remove them, is damage being done, help! It's daunting.

I would first scan them. Or at least a few before you try pulling that wonderful stuff off. I did some years ago and there were lines on the photos as well part of the backs stayed stuck. Scanners were not a home use thing back then..

I would scan the ones I want to keep. They will also probably need some touch up in Photoshop because photos from the 70’s had some terrible processing that did not stand up to time very well. Or, if you are going to keep all the albums, scan the whole page and then touch up the photos. Good luck! Sounds like a big task!

We inherited a bunch of similar albums from dh’s grandmother. The photos all came out very easily…some were just falling out as the adhesive had pretty much dried out.

I was all ready to discuss Elton John, The Eagles, and Paul Simon.
But I see you did not mean music.
Never mind.

If they were my albums, I would very gently pull them off and then send them to a company that will professionally scan then and then put them in the cloud. From there you can edit them and print them again as you wish.

btdt - some were falling out which made it easy. The ones that were super-stuck - I scanned first and then gently eased off the page with my cricut spatula -I would say I was 95%+ successful but the few that weren't successful, I was glad I had scanned first.
I bought a photo scanner (Plustek) for the individual photos because I was going to be dealing with so many - I used either my flatbed scanner/printer or a phone app for the pre-removal scans though.
I found it was useful (to me) to keep the photos in the order they were in the albums (at least at first) because many of them weren't labelled but they were grouped roughly chronologically and that helped with labelling the ones that weren't
I store them in the Iris photo cases (the ones with the 16 small cases inside) - if there is still sticky residue, I slipped a piece of cardstock behind that photo so it would stick to that instead of the next photo.

I would also scan them first if they are not easily falling out. I’ve read dental floss can be helpful for removing them.

Years ago I had those types of albums. After the pics have been in them it is almost impossible to remove them undamaged. I scanned them all by removing the clear cover and scanning each entire page. Then I used Photoshop to crop each photo out of the page.
I spent an entire summer working on it and am so glad that I did. I set it up so that every time I had a few minutes I would scan a few pages. A lot of my photos were taken by old crappy cameras and the colors had all faded so I did color corrections and sharpened the pics up. I have all of these pics stored digitally now.

Thanks, all! Follow-up question -- can anyone recommend a photo scanner that easily scans 12*12 pages (which is what these are)? Or am I going to have to stitch pages on a smaller scanner? I had a small photo scanner/printer years ago but I upgraded to a large-format printer when that died, so no longer have a scanner.
I'm a little overwhelmed at this as a project! Although I guess the worst thing that happens is my own kids don't have the pictures preserved (I don't think my inlaws have any expectations).

Dang, I opened this thread thinking it would be a trip down memory lane with lots of 70's music (albums) being talked about. I graduated in 1979, so 70's music is important to me Best of luck with the photos!

i had those sticky albums and decided i didn't want to store those chunky things anymore. if i were you, i would try to remove them and then scan them. if you can't remove them, i would take some very close and clear photos and toss what i don't want.
