People are assholes. This guy got fired, right?
I'm amazed at people's willingness to make comments about strangers' financial situation to their face. Our previous house was a modest two story house that was very common in our neighborhood. Our neighborhood is well known as a mid-range, starter home kind of neighborhood. I was selling a few things through the marketplace to declutter before selling. One person came to pick an item up, looked at my car and house and said "must be nice to have money. You don't need this $5" (or whatever it was I sold it for) My car was 13 years old and had rust spots. The siding on my house was old, dented aluminium and the porch had outdoor carpet on it to cover the plywood that was put down. I have no idea why you'd assume I had money based on those two things. Similar thing happened with this house too. I'm decorating for Halloween and a neighbor said must be nice to have the money for that. WTF?

My ODS called me the other day and asked if I ordered a $20 pizza, how much would I tip. I said $5. He then told me this story. I would have reported the driver/delivery guy.
Now we are 5 minutes away from any pizza delivery place so we usually pick up. We also live on a street that is also the name of a subdivision across the street a few blocks down. So we when did get delivery we expected a call that they couldn't find us. Because they were in the SD. That was way before most people had phones that had Google maps or Waze. Now it shouldn't be a factor. However, how much my house is/isn't worth should never factor in on my tip decision.

I think the driver may have been Door Dash? Maybe the pizza was pizza hut but not sure that they have any involvement. Door Dash has fired the guy as far as I know.
But yes, this is over the top and completely ridiculous!!

Not cool, but when I order delivery, I always include the tip at that time as many times I don't have cash on hand to tip in cash.

I saw that. What an asshole. I hate the tipping culture these days. I have always tipped in restaurants and when someone in other trades goes above and beyond. Lately I have seen tip jars at the drive thru. Between that and the expected 24% for run of the mill or just plain lousy service, I am done. I refuse to be extorted.

Ummm, and on another topic- did you see Amiri King's profile picture you posted there? That is... a lot. I clicked the link and was like "Holy sh**!"
And yes, that delivery driver sucks. That is a crazy amount of entitlement. Twenty percent is $4.00 so he was already getting a higher than normal tip.

People are assholes. This guy got fired, right? Apparently he was with Door Dash and GMA did say that he is no longer delivering for them. The pizza was $20 and they tipped $5 - that is more than 20%, what kind of tip was the guy expecting? Just because someone lives in a nice house, you think they should tip more than those that don't? What a jerk!! As GMA said in their story, tipping is just so out of hand in this country. One guy said, he picked up a pre-made sandwich and goes to the register and they ask for a tip when he swipes his card. I mean why would you tip on that? Yes, someone made your sandwich and put in the case and someone rang up your order, but they do get paid to do that. They are not going above and beyond.

I was recently on vacation camping in WI. I forgot a couple of things and ran into town at a local wal-mart. I was shocked they had tipping containers out under the pin pad for CC payments. I asked if they were collecting money for a special occasion. She said no, its there if you'd like to tip us. I just shook my head and gathered my things and left. Why in the world would I tip a cashier who is paid by the hour to do that job. What the actual heck. I hate the tipping culture

I should probably pay more attention to the tweets I post 😂 I saw the story on GMA and just searched for the video. I didn’t really read the tweet or see who posted it, I was just focused on the video.

You know, if we all stopped overtipping, tipping culture wouldnt be as bad. We dont have to allow ourselves to be extorted.

Whenever I see a thread on should I tip, I just wonder why? It's more than enough to be tipping waitstaff and the percentage just keeps going up. Here (Canada), waitstaff are not paid less than minimum wage so I don't even see why we tip them since we don't tip the minimum wage cashier at the store and all the other miniumum wage workers.

Here (Canada), waitstaff are not paid less than minimum wage California too, waitstaff gets paid at least minimum wage. But, we've always tipped in California. I like the mom and pop place it go to for lunch sometimes. When you pay by credit/debit card, they quickly cancel out the tipping part that pops up on the screen. And they don't have a tip jar either. Thankfully, most drive-thrus here don't have tip jars out either. The annoying one is when they ask if you want to round-up to donate to charity, but they don't ask for tips when you pay by cash or credit card.

Also I never leave money for charity at the grocery store check out. I always research charities that I donate to and I have no idea where that money is going. All the shoppers donate then the big corporation grocery donates and then writes it all off of their taxes. No thank you. I'll donate on my own and write it off of my own taxes

I have left money for charity at the check out though - if it is for Children's Miracle Network. I am aware of that charity and support it and I know the store uses it as a write of but generally I only donate $1 or $5 (depending on how I feel that day) so it is okay with me.

I’m glad you shared this, OP. I saw the story on GMA this morning and was horrified. Five dollars is probably exactly what I would tip on a $20 pizza, unless the weather was especially shitty or some thing. Typically I just pick up my own takeout anyway. I agree that tipping is so out of hand. With every credit card transaction now popping up the opportunity to tip and jars sitting everywhere, I think they just do it because they assume you’ll be guilted into it.
ETA: i’m surprised the delivery guy didn’t kick the dog while he was at it. What an ass.

He's a jerk for sure.
HOWEVER I will say that with door dash and similar services, I do tip a higher percentage for smaller orders, especially since we live semi rural and it's a further drive for them and not as profitable to them as orders closer to where the stores and restaurants are. Just something I consider important. I have no idea if that was the case here, and even so, he shouldn't have said a thing!

That guy is a jerk. Expecting tips is definitely getting ridiculous. If we go to get frozen yogurt, it's self-serve, the cashier rings it up which is what they get paid to do. I served myself so why is a tip expected? For the first time in a very long time we ate at a sit down restaurant last week and I didn't tip. Our server took our order and that was it. Never saw her again. Someone else brought our food out and we had to flag someone else down for a drink refill. We then had to ask other employees three times for our check. We finally went up to the bar to ask to pay so we could leave. I felt like an ass, but I didn't tip. I paid for the food. We didn't get service that warranted a tip. I'll add that it was a Thursday at 4:00pm so not even busy.

It's one pizza. What the heck percentage of tip was he expecting? $5.00 is a 25% tip. That's a perfectly acceptable percentage tip for driving a pizza to someone's house.
Beyond that...who says those people even owned that home? They could live there, but not be the home-owners---whether they rented or were living with family or friends for awhile.
In fact, they may not even live there. They could have been guests, house-sitters, etc.
When will people learn that making assumptions & judgments is not the way to get ahead in life?

I'm decorating for Halloween and a neighbor said must be nice to have the money for that. WTF? This kind of thing blows me away as well. Money for what? The decorations?? If so, then who says what you spent on those? People sell & give away both second-hand and new things all of the time. I would never assume someone paid full price (or anything at all) for something just because they happen to own it.

I hate the tipping culture I'm really surprised that they even allow tipping containers at WalMart. When my husband worked at Wal-Mart(not that long ago) it was was a big no-no to accept tips. You could be fired. And yep, I'm tired of the tipping culture. Servers in Washington state are paid at least minimum wage, but we're still expected to tip.

I always feel funny when I am at panera or something, place my order and the machine asks if i want to add a tip. No, no one came and waited on me, and i'm not sure the guy who took my order is even the one who is getting my food. So, no. I saw that at the airport too, I grabbed a premade sandwich and when I went to check out, it asked if I wanted to tip. I wasn't sure the cashier was even getting the tip! no.

I do tip wait staff but I often think to myself “why don’t we tip cashiers, or fast food staff, or… ” Standing on your feet all day, dealing with long lines, cranky customers, etc. Wait staff do not have the monopoly on this. When I was in Australia I believe they did not have tipping. But their hourly wage was also quite high in comparison to my area
