I haven’t used self tanner in probably 10 years. I am a fair-skinned redhead who pinks, but does not tan and have been enjoying wearing dresses this summer (a new thing for me) but my super pasty legs bother me so….I bought a highly recommended self tanner. I’ll start using in a couple days, but in the meanwhile, please help me out with my white bedsheets.
If you use self tanner on your legs and have light colored sheets, how big of an issue is it? Would you recommend I just buy a set of darker sheets to use during the months that I use self tanner, or are you able to get it all out in the wash? Any and all advice welcomed, thanks!

I think once it’s dry you should be ok. Just don’t put it on and go to sleep. I don’t recall ever having staining on my clothes or sheets.

I have cream colored sheets and have never had a problem with self tanner staining them.

If it’s fully dry, it should be fine unless it’s really hot and you tend to sweat

I just did self tanner this week and run hot when I sleep. I gave my body 3-4 hours to dry and I still stained my sheets, but it washed out just fine.

The bigger question is: what tanner are you using?? Inquiring minds and all that!

The bigger question is: what tanner are you using?? Inquiring minds and all that! not the OP but I use tanned af. I get it at Walmart. It works fantastic and does not orange me up. I even use it on my face. It's the foamy kind with a bronzer so you see where you are putting it on. Rub it all on and then wait at least an hour. I use a latex glove to spread it.Take a shower until the water runs clear. Don't scrub it, just swish you hands over your body. When you get out of the shower, gently pat dry. Don't rub. You'll look pale again. Don't worry. If you do this in the evening, when you wake up prepare to be shocked. I was wonderfully tan. My mother even asked where I had been. She hadn't seen me this dark since I used to go to the beach.

I use Jergens lotion with self tanner. I put a towel over my cream coloured sheets the first night. After that no towel and no tanner transfer.

Thank you girls, this is better news than I expected. I’ll likely use it in the mornings after I shower, and it sounds like it’s not going to be the issue I thought it would be 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
ETA: I’m trying Beauty By Earth self tanner. I just want a smidge of color for my legs, enough to match the little I have on arms and face. It’s well reviewed and a friend uses it, so I’m hopeful it looks ok on me.

I know you have your answer but I love the foam tan by Bondi Sands. Very gentle tan so no scary streaks etc and dry enough to go to bed after a few mins 😊

I was in Aldi yesterday and they were selling some kind of protective sheets for self tan.

I just bought ridiculously priced white sheets a couple months ago without thinking about this same issue. I also have pink color in my hair and tend to forget to wash off makeup before bed at times. Spray tan every 4-5 days and so far the only thing that’s had any transfer was the pillowcase and top edge of top sheet.. It washed right out.

She hadn't seen me this dark since I used to go to the beach. i use "love at first tan" by the same brand, b.tan. love them for the same reason, the violet undertone! keeps it from being too orange, and the bronze to see where you applied it is great. i am also a pale, natural strawberry blonde and self tanners were a nightmare until i found this. it is so forgiving! i put it on and leave it up to 4 hours until i wash it off, and it never marks on my sheets. but then, i don't sleep on them pre-wash. it hasn't transferred on skirts or anything either tho, because i usually apply, then do my makeup and stuff while it dries, then dress and go run errands or whatever. wash later. seriously love the stuff- no harsh lines, no orange hands.

I wear long pajamas -- in the summer, I just wear thin/silky ones!

I have a couple more questions A reminder, it's been a hot minute since I've used self tanner. I'm only using it on my legs, and just enough to make them a little less glow in the dark I exfoliated yesterday, then had a pedi today so my lower leg was exfoliated again. I almost always moisturize after I shower. I applied the self tanner for the first time a little while ago and now wonder: 1. How often do you reapply self tanner? 2. How often do you exfoliate? And do you find it rubs the color off at all? In the past I felt like it made my skin blotchy. 3. Does shaving your legs impact the color at all? Sorry if any of these sound silly to you and thanks!

I find I need to reapply every 3-5 days. I think exfoliating does take off color so I try to avoid it. Unless I’m trying to fade it off. Every 5-6 weeks I like to skip a week of tanning and fade, then exfoliate and start over. I feel it looks better to me that way.
Shaving does take off a smidge of color too.

Shaving is like exfoliating, so yes, you will lose some color when you shave. Exfoliating will definitely make some of the color go away, so I try not to do it until I am ready to reapply. If you use lotion religiously, it will help your tan last longer. When I self tan, I reapply every probably 4-5 days.

I apply my self tanner about once a week. I also do a tan remover before reapplying. I use the St Tropez tan remover + the tan remover mitt. I find this helps to have a more even tan.
