With the looming UPS strike on July 31, this is just a little PSA to make your purchases now. Things are going to get ugly if contract talks do not avert a strike.

Been doing mine, thanks. Pondering whether I need to do my shopping for the holidays, now, too. I usually start in August, anyway, but I split it up over a few months for the sake of the budget. Would probably make sense, but I'd like a bit of a break from tracking after just finishing birthday season around here.

That's a great heads-up. My daughter's birthday is in a couple of weeks and luckily I ordered her present this morning. I didn't even think about the possible strike.

Thanks! I can be pretty detached and had no idea this was an issue.

We have had almost daily deliveries with college dorm stuff, I feel so bad the delivery drivers have to keep coming. I hope their demands are met.

This could get messy. I think when I googled a week ago they deliver 1/3 of the packages in the US so without them all the other companies will be slammed.

The place where I order specialty dog food from had a message last month to stock up due to impending UPS strike.
Now they have shifted to other carriers and now have a warning that shipping could be delayed to increase on other carriers.
I am sure other places are making the move too.

This might hurt UPS too because people will find alternatives and might not switch back. So not just the time frame of the strike. With people already switching and then maybe not wanting the hassle to switch back.

Is the UPS strike only for a set number of days or is it indefinite? I keep hearing "a 10 day strike" but I don't see how a set number of days is very impactful. I always wonder why nurses/teachers only strike for a few days instead of indefinitely.

I did not know anything about the possibility of a strike and appreciate the info!

My expected on Saturday package from QVC has “been delayed” due to transit issues….

Oh, just occurred to me to buy my usual Chewy subscription now instead of whenever it’s next scheduled to ship. Thanks for that. While I PSA’d, I totally forgot about that.

If you find out, please let us know.

I don't think it's intended to be only a set number of days, but people keep saying it'll be a two week strike before an agreement is reached. I suspect because of the impact it will have on the economy and UPS in general they'll agree quick.
By all accounts the sticking point right now is on part time driver pay. Full time drivers make $42/hour. But part time drivers only make $16. So they are striking for fair wages for part time drivers.

In the article I just read it had the wages listed much lower than that, which I had a hard time believing. $42 an hour seems much more believable. And yes, they definitely need to do something about part time wages. That’s ridiculous.

People were bashing him for supporting the strike and he explained very clearly that they were doing this for the part time drivers. I appreciated how he was willing to support his coworkers for fair wages. He said full time drivers wages were actually set to go up again based on their contract.

Good point! I hate shopping and things are going to be super annoying if I have to go in person to buy things. I didn't get the shopping gene. I love getting something new but I hate shopping with a passion. Online shopping is the best thing ever invented. I had no idea a strike was coming. Thanks for the heads up.

My DD works for UPS at the Louisville airport hub. She doesn’t seem to think it’s gonna go on too long. They are expected to get around a $4/hr raise for her position. She drives wagons of packages from building to airplanes.

Maybe this will help me not want to make impulse online purchases. My Amazon stuff is a mixture of UPS/Fedex deliveries now so I will have to keep an eye on my subscribe and save deliveries.

Good point! I hate shopping and things are going to be super annoying if I have to go in person to buy things. I’m sure it would also affect in store shopping as well, especially if you shop with smaller retailers who don’t get their inventory from regional warehouses or by the semi truck load. Another thing they are striking over is working conditions. With the current heat wave, drivers are working 8-12 hour days in trucks without air conditioning and the temps in those trucks can reach 150° or more. I’ve read that there have been some driver deaths due to heat stroke. They definitely deserve better working conditions.
