Just a couple weeks ago at my annual eye check the Dr said “Your cataracts could come out anytime, but you could probably wait 2 or 3 years”.
I jumped on that, “But I could do it now?” , “Yes, but you have to have some kind of lifestyle complaint, for instance you avoid driving at night…”
“I do avoid driving at night!”
So from there everything moved super quickly. I was stunned by how fast I was scheduled and the first surgery was Monday, and I was already driving yesterday. I’m so thrilled to have this being taken care of.
NOW, Sunday, my son, who I live with, went through the Safeway ad, and decided there were enough great deals it made it worth fooling with the app, and making a special trip, fortunately they are right around the corner. He’s gone a half hour, and comes back flushed with the triumph of getting so many great deals.
Then when he goes to use the car again, he can’t find his wallet. Intense search follows. Then panic. Calls to Safeway. Goes to Safeway to search parking lot, they even let him view security camera footage and he sees he left with wallet in his pocket.
Mood in house is now very grim. There was $1,900.00 in cash in there, plus the usual pain of having to cancel all the cards. My son has his own business so it’s extra complicated.
That evening he gets a text. Did you lose something? He says yes, my wallet. The next text says they found it in the pavement in front of Target, with the credit cards all fanned out on the ground. No money. The person won’t talk on the phone, won’t give a name, and finally agrees to meet at Home Depot (all these stores are near us), to return the wallet.
My son goes alone, which made us nervous, the person seemed so cagey. He comes back and says he is sure this guy was in the camera footage from Safeway, and that 1) he took the money, and 2) this was not normal for him, but it being so much money was just too tempting for him. My son kept trying to get a name, telling him when he got more money he’d like to reward him for bringing him his wallet, but the guy refused.
That was Sunday, Monday, while he’s in the ocean fishing, my son gets a text, could you meet at Home Depot again? He says no, but he can on Tuesday.
I had my follow up appointment with the eye doctor, and then therapy, and didn’t get home until 6:00, and was dying of curiosity. I walked in the house, and was told, “Jim said his conscience was killing him these last three days.”
And there on the kitchen table was an envelope with hundred dollar bills spilling out of it.
I asked if he gave the guy a reward, and yes, $300.
I’m proud of you, Jim. Took guts to do that.

Wow that is lucky that the guy owned up to it-I am sure your son did not think he would ever see that money again!

$1900 in cash! Was he on his way to the bank to make a deposit?
He's really lucky he got any of that back.
Hope your recovery from surgery goes smoothly.

That would have been very tough to do! An honest person is good to hear about.

He got paid in cash on Friday, and intended to deposit Monday, yeah. It’s an extra insult to work your but off in this heat and then have the money stolen.

If I am carrying large amount of cash. It is in my front pocket which is rolled up with the dollars behind the front of the pocket.

It is really nice to know that some people still have a conscience. My husband left his wallet in a shopping cart in the parking lot of a store. We noticed as soon as we got back on the road, went right back and it was gone. Came home and found it on our bench on the front porch. He had three or four hundred dollars along with credit cards and ID, all still there. Some guy named Jose left a note saying he wanted to make certain my husband got his wallet back. He left no contact info. We would have loved to have given him all of the cash just for not having the hassle of replacing credit cards and driver's license. Your son was so lucky.
As for cataract surgery, isn't it just the most amazing gift? I had no idea how blind I was getting until the drive home from the surgery. Everything was technicolor and crystal clear. Of course what I thought was my clean kitchen looked like someone had a food fight in it. I must have just been smearing the stains around on the cabinets and floor but couldn't see it. I went on a huge cleaning binge with my new eyesight. Enjoy your new eyes!

But I’ve noticed a big difference. Things I thought were beige or off white are in fact—white! And colors are so bright. I love it. Maybe I’ll do better at playing Hues and Cues now, everybody just shakes their head at how I describe colors. And I’m sure this will be good for my water color painting.

Your son is much nicer than me. I wouldn’t have “rewarded”” him with $300. He lied about the money and took 3 days to return it.If he had returned the wallet with the money immediately I would have probably give him $50.

I don’t know how to do a survey, but I really would like to know what the Peas think about this. I would love it if someone would give the basics of this story and ask whether people think the guy should/should not have been rewarded, and how the fact that he intended to keep it at first affects their answer.

I think your son was sweet, and I think it's a wonderful thing to reward someone who's had a change of heart for the better. Jim is likely to be kinder to the next person he encounters, because your son was kind to him.

It happened so gradually over time that I just didn't realize how bad my sight had become. I had to take my husband and daughter to LAX late one night. On the way home, alone, I was scared to death as I just couldn't see and the glare of lights was blinding me. I set up an apt to get my surgery shortly after that as I knew that I couldn't night drive any more.

I am in Orange County and it was a loooong drive with bad vision. I don't scare easily and I was very happy to get home in one piece. I had no idea my night vision was that bad until it was too late. I hadn't driven at night for a long time and had no problem with daytime driving.

Don't cataracts have to be at a certain size/level, etc for surgery? I guess insurance doesn't pay unless it is "bad enough."?? My eye dr mentioned it a few years ago because I feel uncomfortable driving at night and he said I probably wouldn't be a surgical candidate for many years.

My eye dr mentioned it a few years ago because I feel uncomfortable driving at night and he said I probably wouldn't be a surgical candidate for many years. That’s what my eye Dr started telling me a couple years ago. Of all words, he said they had to “ripen”. That just cracked me up! Waiting for them to get bad enough did not crack me up. My vision was deteriorating at a rate that made my driving glasses almost worthless a few months after getting them. I pretty much quit driving at night except for quick trips close to home. I was not much help to my parents when I visited them, and they are in their 80’s! Each year I hoped he would say it’s time, but until this one I wasn’t there yet. This is why when he said they could go any time, but I could wait 2 or 3 years, I said no way! The Dr said there needs to be a lifestyle complaint, like avoiding night driving. Try asking your doctor if you have any of the issues that insurance will accept.
