We tried to go on the weekend but couldn't get in to any cinema within about a 45 drive from us. And it was showing in one of their cinemas like every 30 minutes. Both my kids have seen it. One got tickets to a prescreening for her birthday and the other booked ahead and got lucky i guess. They both loved it. We will try again this weekend.

It was pretty much sold out everywhere I looked today; ended up seeing Mission Impossible which I enjoyed.
Have tickets for Barbie on Wed!

ok so DD who just turned 17 went to see it with her friends and she came back totally sad!
She loved her Barbies and Ken growing up and wasn't expecting it to be so 'preachy' in her words. DD is a bit more conservative side and she said all they did was get "politicy and preachy" and was so upset about how they made Ken the 'bad guy'.
She realized it was geared towards grown ups but I think she was still hoping it was going to be more on the lighter, childish side. My sweet girl, so naive despite our epic political discussions.
After talking about it a bit she said she wants to see it again so she can try to enjoy it more, I think she was just blindsided by the feminist themes.
<ed to add that these are my DD own, uninfluenced thoughts. Fox is banned from our home and our family is fairly liberal, anti Maga with a passion>

DD24 is traveling around Europe this summer and just posted a picture of her at the Barbie movie. “When in the fashion capital of the world, you see Barbie - Milan, Italy”

I really did some soul searching after the movie because I found myself feeling the same way and it was waaaaaaaay more my issue (and how my mother approached male/female relationships and transferred that to her daughters) than the movie's issue. I loved the feminist themes. I felt they needed to be said and I really hope there are people (including Yvonne's daughter) who may initially say "ick" but might think a little more about women's places (or lack thereof) in the patriarchy.

My niece and her daughter (age 16) saw it and reported it had very feminist message. She also said at the beginning of the movie Barbie says women of the world must love her because she has solved the problems of equal rights and feminism. My niece said she laughed loudly and go the side eye "You are embarrassing me" from her daughter.

I just got back from seeing Barbie for the second time. My husband didn’t go with the boys and I and decided he wanted to see it.
He loved it.
I liked it even more the second time because I was able to catch things I missed the first time. And the scene between Rhea and Margot near the end literally made me cry this time.
I really do think that the movie, with all of its levels of commentary, is genius. Down to Barbie wearing Birkenstocks in the last scene.

My friends and I went to a 4:30 showing yesterday. We all thought that the movie was only OK. It had its funny and touching moments, but I felt it was overhyped. I thought Rhea Perlman, Kate McKinnon and America Ferrara's performances stood out. And Ryan Gosling was fun to look at.
We were surprised that the theater we were in was practically empty, even though the parking lot of the very large theater (16 screens) was packed. Unfortunately there was a group that sat a few rows behind us that brought their young children were very disruptive. They talked and made noise throughout the movie and the parents made no attempt to quiet them down. They also left a mess when they left.

I went with my girls last night. We loved it!!
I cried a few times for sure. Ryan Gosling was the perfect Ken. And I loved that Barbie didn't love Ken in the end and made her own choices for herself. Loved Kate McKinnon as well - hilarious!

I consider myself a feminist, but parts of it seemed like the syllabus from a Women's Studies class. I loved America Ferrara's speech. Spot on, but some of the speeches about the patriarchy and how they dumbed down the men to empower women were a little much. Not all men are himbos. Women don't become Supreme Court material by subjugating men. How do the Barbies all get brainwashed so quickly? And what about equality? Here either the Barbies or the Kens have all the power. Overall we all loved the movie, and I hope it gets some awards buzz. It's a smart, funny movie, but sometimes a little too smart for its own good.

All of the characters had a developmental arc so by the end they were all aware that they all had merit and didn't need others to be the best versions of themselves.

My daughter and I saw it yesterday. She is 24. We both agreed we could stare at Margot Robbie as Barbie in all those outfits for 2 hours. The set was amazing. Ryan Gosling was perfect. I loved Alan. It was preachy, but that was the point of the movie. The part I really didn't like was Will Ferrell and the Mattel board.

Dunno, I felt like it was kind of a perfect display of how there are tons of men who aren't bad guys, but also aren't especially skilled, and end up having a lot of success just because of how our world works.

Still processing the movie. I will say I didn’t wear pink, but I did unknowingly wear Birkenstocks. 😜

While I love all the people in the movie, I am NOT interested in seeing it.
I have never liked Barbie’s. I didn’t play with dolls. I preferred cars and building toys. My 12 year old (when she was 4-7) promptly removed the heads of any Barbie’s she got and hacked their hair off then buried them in the backyard sandbox.
I don’t think DD and I are the target audience 😂
I’ve also heard that it gets pretty political. No thanks.

Fox is banned from our home and our family is fairly liberal, anti Maga with a passion> I'm pretty conservative and I actually enjoyed the movie. I saw it twice b/c my daughter wasn't able to go the first time I went with a group of friends. I went into it thinking it was going to be something it really is not. I didn't feel it was at all preachy or men bashing (as I had heard some say). In fact, I feel it made a great point that in Barbieland, Ken is an accessory. I mean 99% of the time, it's little girls playing with Barbie and we can make our play be whatever we want it to be. So normally we give our play objects the power and abilities we want. But in the real world, men hold power and have merit. I like the way the conflict was resolved in Barbieland.
And yes the set was amazing. I loved how it really felt like you were looking at it like it was the dreamhouses and accessories.

This was my favourite thing, the whole look of Barbieland was amazing, but I really love how the houses looked just like the toys and the landscape was so clearly fake. The real world was so drab by comparison (which I get was the point). I really enjoyed the movie, it was just good fun. Ken new name for Barbie's dreamhouse just made me laugh and I thought Ryan Gosling was fabulous as Ken. I went with friends but my DH has now heard so many people talk about it that he wants to see it so I'll be watching it again.

You didn’t have to have played with Barbies to appreciate the film, as some people seem to think. I loved that all the Ken’s were all “Ken,” except for Allen, of course (Michael Cera is such a good deadpan comedic actor). And the Ken-off between Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu (from the Marvel Universe - Shang-Chi) must have required multiple takes due to cracking up. Dh and I hope that someone leaks an outtake reel from the movie, because there had to be a lot of laughter on that set.

Just saw it with my mom and my 18 year old daughter and maybe because I’m just about to bring her to her first year of college, I was incredibly emotional. Cried through most of it. Didn’t find it preachy in the least and really felt like it was a very gentle acknowledgement of how unequal the gender roles still are. Kept thinking of RBG’s quote about when will there be enough women on the Supreme Court and the idea that a Supreme Court or boardroom completely full of men isn’t sexist or unrealistic but a Supreme Court or boardroom of all women is clearly an attack on men 🙄
Shallowly, my favorite part was that my daughter and I wore matching pink dresses and she was so excited to take me.
