My dad has recently gotten hearing aids. I believe they actually can go thru his phone so he can take calls and watch videos, etc.
We recently flew to South Dakota for my grandmother's funeral, and he said that the airplane was so loud, he couldn't really hear even with his hearing aids. He was wishing he had noise cancelling headphones, and since his birthday is coming up, and he and my mom are flying to Fiji in October, I would like to buy him a pair.
But would it be better to get him airpods that stick in his ears (not sure if that would interfere with his hearing aids tho), or something with a "cans" style that go over the ears? They are bulky to travel with, but my dad is also constantly losing his glasses, his keys, his wallet, LMAO....
TIA

He could wear over-ear headphones over his hearing aids. They are also superior in terms of true noise-cancellation.
I highly recommend Bose. That is all I wear when I fly and the noise-cancellation is awesome.
That said, he still won’t be able to hear your mom while wearing them, nor when they are off if the plane noise interferes with his hearing aids.

What about just turning the hearing aids off? The ones they make these days are controlled through either their own remote or more likely, a phone app. Mine use an app and when I am in a noisy store, I just mute everything. I can still hear what is going on around me with them muted. He could also turn the volume way down so that he could still be aware if someone was speaking to him so that he could dial it up enough to hear them.
An alternative would be to have him connect to music or an iPad movie during his flight. If he can still hear the plane noise and finds it distracting, he can use the over-the-ear pieces to tune out any extra noise.

Look at Aipod Pros (latest version) They can actually be a good alternative to hearing aids. My dh could use a hearing aid in one ear and these totally do the trick. They have noise canceling and two directional mics that can pick up where the sound you want to hear is coming from.

I wear hearing aids in both ears and I cannot hear if I wear AirPods. I just can’t get the volume turned up loud enough. Headphones are also an issue for me if I’m wearing my hearing aids. They just aren’t made for people who wear hearing aids. They hurt because they press on the aids.
I can turn off my aids via my phone app and also stream my phone and the tv using Bluetooth into my hearing aids.

DH funnels everything into his hearing aids or wears over the ear headphones. You really can't wear a hearing aid and air pods that I'm aware of.
However, there are settings for most modern hearing aids to dampen loud rooms, to funnel the sound only from the front (facing you), wind noises, or restaurant settings. I'd recommend that he make an appointment with the person who adjusts his hearing aids and work on a solution that works for him.

My dh has profound hearing loss in both ears and wears hearing aids. He also experiences alot of ear pain when flying. He recently bought bone conduction headphones. He wore them on the plane on our last trip with specialty "earplane" ear plugs and left his hearing aids out. This was a pretty successful combination for him.

My MIL wears Bluetooth enabled hearing aids. She switches to the Bluetooth for church, the plane, the tv, her phone or whichever Bluetooth device is needed included music for some places/venues (bars, dance hall, etc) she goes to with friends. Works for her

I wonder about bone conduction headphones? When I lost my hearing in one ear my brother suggested those. They work for me. I get my music off my iPhone.
These headphones are worn by athletes because the DO NOT go in the ears. Athletes wear them so they can hear their music and hear the traffic around them. I just got mine off of Amazon. When I first got them my brother recommended to get a medium priced set. That way I wasn't out a lot of money if they didn't work.

I have heard of the shockz brand, but wasn't sure if they were for noise cancelling/music or video use, but more for exercising!

My husband can wear over the ear headphones with his hearing aids, but the hearing aids are Bluetooth and he just syncs them to his phone to listen to music or podcasts.

Update: I got my dad a pair of Sony over the ear style headphones. HE LOVES THEM! It's driving my mom crazy bc he is using them all the time and she will try to talk to him and he can't hear her. LMAO. This makes me so happy that I got him something he is using and excited about, even if they were't top of the line (I figure if he really wanted Bose or something, we could upgrade later, but he is really hard on his stuff so this is a good start). He has tried them with the hearing aids, he said the hearing aids power down and default to the headphones, which he figured bc it would probably start a feedback loop. Thanks for everyone's input!
