I just read that taking olive oil daily reduces your chances of developing dementia:
Including olive oil in your regular diet offers several benefits — such as protecting heart health or cognitive function.
The Mediterranean staple might also reduce your risk of dying from dementia by 28% if you eat just a spoonful every day.
This new finding is according to research presented Monday in Boston at Nutrition 2023, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.
I do use olive oil for cooking, but I’ve never just swallowed a spoonful of it and don’t think I can. I will make sure that I start adding it whenever I can though.
I just used some on potatoes and brushed some onto skinless baked chicken before putting it in the oven. My favorite way to fix vegetables is to roast them so I will start brushing them liberally with olive oil before putting them in the oven.
I have been eating a great deal of salmon (Costco salmon burgers are on sale starting Aug 2 if you are considering them) and will make more of an effort to add roasted vegetables to it. I used to be able to find these really inexpensive plastic bags in California. They were perfect to put vegetables in and then shake to cover with olive oil and any spices. I don’t want to waste a big ziplock bag for this and wish I could find them around here. I do have an oil mister that is still packed. That will work.
Do you use olive oil a lot and can you just swallow a spoonful?

I use it with spices added for dipping oil with bread. Then I don’t have any trouble eating a few spoonfuls. 😂

I use it for cooking all the time. I even use a bit if cooking myself an egg or egg whites. If I’m cooking veggies in a pan, potatoes that snd cut up I toss with olive oil and seasoning. I use for chicken or pork tender going into the oven and I love roasted or grilled veggies and always put a bit on the pan and then drizzle more on top snd then add seasoning. I have done a couple of olive oil tastings snd it was interesting. I did just drink the oil at one place. If it’s really fresh and the good stuff it isn’t bad. I bought a bottle with other spices snd such for bread dipping. I need to remember to use it just shake it up snd then add to a plate and then dip sourdough bread in it and it’s good.
I guess I could go back and buy a bottle of the good stuff (locally grown) I use the stuff from Costco for cooking but not sure I could convince myself to try that alone.

I use regular olive oil for cooking and extra virgin for everything else. Oil and vinegar is our usual salad dressing, I use it on vegetables and potatoes.

No spoonfuls though I don't use a bag either sometimes I put them in a bowl but if roasting they usually just go on a sheet pan I may toss them but usually I just drizzle oil on them and sprinkle some seasoning. If grilling I usually put them in a bowl to toss and then into a grill pan. I am not that picky about totally coating everything.

EVOO is our primary oil; we also use avocado, coconut, grape seed and sunflower oil occasionally. Baking, whatever it calls for.

Dr Caldwell Esselstyn, from the Cleveland Cardiac Center - a very well respected healthcare center on a par with the Mayo Clinic, and other nutrition experts, believe eating any oils are bad for cardiac health. You can hear him talk about it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_o4YBQPKtQ&ab_channel=VegSource He was my dr before he retired so I follow his advise. I believe the clinic still educates their cardiac patients with his protocols. So I guess two sides to every coin.

I make two salads frequently with olive oil as ingredients in the dressings, so I guess that counts?
The greek salad if anyone cares is cucumbers, grape tomatoes, bell pepper, feta cheese, and the dressing is olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, garlic and oregano or dill. The family inhales it, I have to triple the recipe...

I'd like to see that backed up with further trials. If it was as simple as that, it would be wonderful.

The above post is a robot.
With everything in life; moderation is key. 55 years ago, I was in an accident that left me with some injuries to my face. I was told to rub the scars 2-3 times with olive oil. I did faithfully and to this day, the scars are so faint most people would never realize they were then. I believe in the stuff.

I'd like to see that backed up with further trials. If it was as simple as that, it would be wonderful. I totally agree. It doesn't say that olive oil PREVENTS dementia, only that it MAY reduce the risk of dying from dementia. I think a lot more work is needed before more can be said. I will still use olive oil in my cooking and salads, but I'm not going to start drinking it anytime soon.

I have a bottle of lemon olive oil that I use for fish, salad dressings, marinades, and roasting veggies. It’s really good. There are also some of the same benefits with canola oil, but we mainly use olive oil.

You can also add a tablespoon of olive oil to soups.

I’m 1/2 Greek and I’m pretty sure I had olive oil in my baby bottles. I use it daily. Love, love, love it. We do import it from the family olive groves in Greece, so are getting fresher & tastier oil than anything available in the store. The Greeks do keep the best oil for themselves.

They are stripped down nutritionally and are basically all fat. If you want the nutrients you think are in olive oil, eat the olives in their all natural state and skip the oil. I'm a big fan of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, his son Rip Esselstyn and also T. Colin Campbell. One thing that you can do to help prevent dementia is eat a whole foods, plant based diet without oil.

I was just going to say a Mediterranean diet is very healthy, which would include olive oil in moderation.

I haven't read all the responses so please forgive me if I'm repeating what others have said here. We need SOME oil in our diet. Vitamins A, D, E and K are only soluble in oil/fat so without any oil at all, we wouldn't be able to metabolise them. Vitamins are essential to our health. One of my mother's friends (they were both nurses) was told decades ago that because her mother had cardiac issues, she should not eat any oil or fat. She won't even eat a cookie. She is rail-thin, has osteoporosis, her eyesight and memory are terrible, her hair and skin have always looked thin and dry. She's wheelchair bound now, in her 70s. Mum asked her years ago whether she had any health indications of her own not to eat fat and she was not aware of any. We don't eat a lot of oil, but olive oil is the only oil I use, and I use it for everything. We don't deep fry. I couldn't just eat a spoonful of any oil.

My family grows olives and we produce our own olive oil so yes, I do use it for almost anything you need oil for. It's a lot of work but it's nice to always have as much oil as you need. None of us have bought olive oil in several years now which is nice. I'm not sure I could bring myself to just swallow a spoonful though.
