I am probably the most tech challenged person you will ever "know". I have to get a new phone and am having a hard time deciding between an iphone, android or google pixel phone.
I currently have a google pixel and it's almost 4 yrs. old. I am out of room for photos, I take way too many and have no idea how to store them on a hard drive.
My priorities in a new phone are getting good photos and videos.
Need to be able to store photos/videos on an external hard drive. My kids tell me you can't do that easily with an iphone.
What do you recommend, and what are the pros and cons of your recommendation?
Thanks so much!

If you use Google photos you can store on the cloud. I have a pixel. The photos are really good.

Does that work for an iphone too? My daughter has an iphone and doesn't think she can save any photos other than the icloud. She says she can't save onto a hard drive. But could she use google photos to save her pictures to google photos, then send a copy from google photos to an external hard drive?
I am so old fashioned, I miss the film and negatives!

Thank you! Are you able to put the pictures directly from your phone to an external hard drive?

If you're tech challenged stick with the Pixel. Or if your kids are willing to help walk you through things get what they have.

Tell your daughter that I have an iPhone and I save all my photos to a hard drive (both internal and external). You either connect the phone to a computer and download the photos, or you use AirDrop if you have an Apple computer. For you, I would stick with the Pixel. You are familiar with it, and it does take great photos!

wait, does your phone work and you are just out of photo storage? Let's see if we can help you get the photos off your phone and open up the storage. Much cheaper than a new phone

Thank you! Are you able to put the pictures directly from your phone to an external hard drive? Yes, you can save any photos from ANY phone to a hard drive via your computer. Here's a link with instructions to move photos from your pixel to a hard drive depending on what computer you have support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2840804?hl=en

Every new phone has better picture quality than 4 years ago, but how much technology do you need, especially if not a professional photographer. If you have Amazon Prime, every photo you take can be stored to the cloud, free and then if you want to save to an external hard drive you can. If your current phone takes great pictures, then don't get a new phone. Just copy your hard drive to a cloud-based storage option, like, free, Amazon Prime, and then delete the images on your phone... rinse and repeat. If you plug your Pixel phone into a computer via cable, aren't you able to tell your computer what to do with the photos, like store it to your computer hard drive? And not sure of the learning curve of going from a Pixel to iPhone, as iPhone and Android systems are different. And how much do you want to spend on an iPhone?

My son has a pixel and it does take really good pics.
So does my Samsung S21 and DH iPhone, but I agree with the others to probably stick to what you know.
For the record, I hate DH iPhone and he hates my S21. We are a family divided. 😁

You're better off having at least one cloud backup. The life span of an external hard drive is only a few years. So you'll need a backup.

Samsung Galaxy has the best cameras and are also easier to navigate. We love ours. Apple has great marketing, not so great phones in my opinion.

I have an iphone XR. I transfer my photos from my phone using an app called Photo Transfer App. Don't know how to post the picture of the icon here but it's blue with a two frames overlapping each other in the center and the picture in the center is of daisies. I use it all the time to transfer photos off my phone and it's free!

wait, does your phone work and you are just out of photo storage? Let's see if we can help you get the photos off your phone and open up the storage. Much cheaper than a new phone Yes, but is very slow and sometimes just shuts off. I can't have any extra apps as there is no room for anything. My husband does put my photos on a hard drive a couple times a year (my birthday and Christmas gifts I tell him!). But we never check the hard drive to make sure they are on there. He has them go to a drop box, but I worry that if something happens I could still loose them. I don't know if drop box is 100% safe or not.
I have a daughter on a university dance team, so we have season tickets for football and basketball and I take soooo many pictures of her perfroming at all games and bowl games, etc. So they take up so much space. And I am too scared to delete any of the pictures or videos.

How do you get photos from iphone to hard drive? My daughter's phone has 8 yrs. of not backed up to hard drive photos, so would it take days to upload them? Maybe she should just do a couple years instead of all of them.

Also, I cannot be in group texting with iphone users. Do you have a problem with that too? I don't have an iphone, but everyone else in my text group does. The only difference is that I don't see the emojis when they heart, sad, whatever a message. I get words instead. I will slightly disagree with some other posters who say you don't need a new phone if you can figure out the photo storage. I agree that figuring out the photo storage is more important than getting a new phone. But with the constant improvements in technology, a new phone will probably take even better pictures than your current phone, which seems important to you.

All the versions of Samsungs I've owned and all the versions of iPhone my sister has owned, never have I got a clear video from her. They are so small and so blurry I can't even guess what the video is supposed to be of. She just sends them in IG message. Yes you can be in a group text with iphones. I get the iphone emojis.

I mostly get iPhone emojis. Not all the time, but mostly. The newest Pixel has much better storage then the one you have. Pixels also have more storage then Samsungs which are filled with bloat ware.

Android and iPhone use different formats for videos, that is why the videos are often small and blurry when you directly transfer a video between an android phone and an iPhone. They say you need to do some kind of compression to an Android video, upload it to a cloud service, then download it onto the iPhone to transfer a good quality video. To transfer photos to a hard drive, you just connect the phone to the computer. I am not sure how a PC handles it since I am an Apple girl and use the Apple Photos app to put my photos on to my hard drive. The Apple Photos app is pretty automatic. I am sure there is something similar for the PC. Photos do not take long to transfer, movies take a lot longer. 8 years worth could be a lot, depending on how much she takes. It will take at least a few hours.

I went from a pixel to an iphone and I'm still not exceptionally happy with the changeover. Google has some nice features that iphone doesn't have (more volume control choices between ring, alarm and media, always on display, and some other minor stuff). I'll probably change back next time I get a phone, if the pixel out at the time is good.

You have a Google phone. The best part of it is how easy it integrates all the Google products. Google photos is available for all phone and is super easy way to set up sharing and will back up your photos to the cloud. Probably for free since you are just now filling up your phone. When I started many years ago I transferred about 30k photos/videos to Google photos. It took several days. But I still didn't fill up the free storage. I think I'm over 100k photos/videos and pay for a terabyte of storage. I'm also a heavy user of Google Drive but my photos take up most of the storage. I easily share good quality photos and videos via Google Photos with my SIL who has and iphone.
