On a normal day, do you carry around any thing for self-protection? I made the poll so you can only pick one, so pick the one that is the most lethal if you carry multiple devices.
I don't carry anything. It is not something I think about a lot, even living here in So. Cal. If something starts to feel a little sketchy, I'll get my keys out and walk away from the area if possible. Even on trips up to L.A. or to NYC, I don't carry anything for self-protection.
Now, I do have pepper spray. That is for when I go on walks with my dog and if we ever come across a coyote. I almost had to use it once. Pulled it out when we saw a coyote cross our path. The coyote stopped and looked at us, but then went on its way when a car came by. Thank you to that car! LOL!

I live in a boring-ass town where the main crimes are car theft (or theft of stuff inside cars since apparently people leave their keys in their cars here) heroin ODs, and probably domestic violence related to substance abuse.
I did buy bear spray, but never carried it because I was afraid I'd panic if I saw a bear and have wind blow-back.

I have two knives. Neither are particularly large, although certainly not allowed past TSA. But I carry at least one with me all the time.
When I run, I have a combo of whistle, pepper spray and/or a knife

not a thing - but I was thinking the other morning when I was taking my morning walk on our town's recreation path "what would I do if I crossed paths with a bear?" and my answer was "I have no idea..."
I'm in and out of NYC all the time; and Chicago and Boston and DC (4 daughters in 4 major cities) and I've never felt afraid or in need of personal protection.

You may want to rethink carrying pepper spray to ward off coyotes. If one got close enough to spray, I’d be afraid of spraying the dog and myself along with the coyote.
You can buy a small air horn from Amazon. I understand blowing one of those is effective against coyotes and can be used at a greater distance than pepper spray.
Just a thought.

Nothing. I truly don't feel I need a gun or knife or pepper spray to feel safe.
And too many times good guys with weapons end up killing someone that didn't need to die or harm/kill themselves.
I am not out walking the streets at 3am. And even leaving the hospital at 2 or 3am, I feel safe walking to my vehicle. I feel safe shopping at 8pm at night.

No, but if I did it would be for wild animals. But you never can tell when you would run across those. My parents had a bear meander down their walkway between the detached garage and house during the afternoon. Who thinks “oh I need to run out to the garage let me grab some protection”. So I guess I just hope for the best with the wildlife. 🤷🏻♀️

Nothing. I don't go anywhere at night, and anywhere I go in the daytime is not a location where I'd need a weapon or mace or anything. When I'm on at the hospital I usually go in on Friday in the early evening and don't leave until Sunday afternoon. On the rare occasions where I might arrive or leave in the dark a security guard will walk me to my car if I ask.

I used to carry mace but now that I have a toddler in tow I don’t want him to get ahold of it. I have a Birdie alarm now.
I recently had a run in with a strange man who kept popping up on my walking route despite me intentionally changing direction several times. He didn’t let up until I walked to the fire station near my house. I was alone and wish I had my mace with me then.

On a normal day -nothing.
I don't know if this counts as self-protection, as I am not worried about boogey men, but I do carry a small spade or a very heavy livestock cane when I am going to be in with cattle. The cane is used to sort cattle and also to prop me up once in a while. I did have to use it once to beat a very angry cow back. I also sometimes use the small spade for the same reason. I carry the spade in my Gator to dig weeds in pastures and help me check hot fence in the pastures.
As a rule, I never carry a fire arm for protection. Sometimes I have one along for a varmint that needs taken care off. I did carry my rifle when we knew a cougar was in our area, but honestly I was so freaked out, that I doubt I could have taken a shot. I would just skedaddle the heck out of there if I saw it. I'd rather take a picture of it. I would only shoot it, if I saw it actively hunting our calves.
If there is a stranger out on our road, I will usually take a photo of their license plate as I go by. There were a couple guys out walking one day, and that slightly freaked me out, so I texted my husband a photo of them. He came out and talked to them. They had spent the night in a county park down the road from us and were "walking back to town" - so DH offered them a ride in the back of his pickup to get them out of the neighborhood.

Your first four options (gun, knife, taser, mace) are all illegal to carry here. So that doesn't leave many options! No I don't carry anything.

I had been given a taser a while ago and it lived in the car. We've changed cars a few times since then and moved, so I don't know where it is now.
I have nothing now, but did put my keys between my fingers like Wolverine 😅 one night when I parked at the front entrance to the hospital early in the morning and had to walk around the building late one night to get to my car. They lock the front entrance at 9pm and the ER is the only open door on the other side of the building.

No, I don’t carry anything like that with me at home. I know that guns in the home are far more likely to be used to hurt or kill one of the inhabitants than in successful self defense. So we don’t take the risk.
It’s been super nice these past two weeks, though, knowing that the likelihood of being caught in a mass shooting was almost zero. Congrats New Zealand and Australia.

I do not carry anything. Per the news or whatever decides it, I live in the worst crime riddled area in the US. Always makes the top 10. I just go to work, Walmart at lunch, store after work and home. I just keep my wits about me.
I am walking more later at night and have thought about it. I do have a Birdie type of alarm/flashing light. I only have that due to my walking the Camino de Santiago in October. Lots of dogs on the Way and there has been an exhibitionist sighting a couple of times.

I won’t walk downtown Victoria alone without something. I just refuse to ever go downtown. I was just there last Friday and thought it was such good fun. I think there were about 16,000 people off of 4 cruise boats though. I'd probably avoid the place if I lived there. My son desperately needed to go to Tim Hortons. We thoroughly enjoyed the Timbits (birthday cake).

I answered no and don’t think about it yet when we get notified of an active bear close by I will either not walk in the woods or carry an air horn.

No but I used to. These days I almost never go anywhere alone at night and I live in a pretty boring suburb where not much happens so I feel safe most of the time. I’m usually very aware of my surroundings. I used to do the key thing when I was in college and had to walk out to my car alone at night near downtown Minneapolis. We do keep a can of wasp spray in our bedroom. If someone broke in, it sprays 25’ and can disable a person without killing them if you spray them in the face.

What options are available for self defense against someone or group of someones who is easily able to overpower you? What would happen if you used crazy4scrap's 25' wasp spray?

Fun’s, tasers and mace are not allowed.
