I can’t imagine. I realize insurance and all, but to get the needed supplies to the island to rebuild. Gads….there are still issues within the contiguous states.
So sad.

So much has been lost! I can’t imagine for the terror they all went through in the past 24 hours. The history that is lost forever. It took so long to build back Kauai after Hurricane Iniki. I just heard they will be getting disaster relief, but it still such a long road ahead of them. I, like countless others, have such lovely memories of Front Street. If anyone hears how to support the locals, please post.

one news story posted this morning referenced the maui food bank for donations. I would also think the red cross would be supporting people. I feel it will take the navy, national guard and many more resources to assist the folks there. reminded me of the pictures of paradise fire in ca

Oh no, how devastating! Those photos and videos are terrifying. I have friends in Hawaii at the moment, but they're on O'ahu. As far as I can tell, there are no fires there. Maui and Lahaina are beautiful. It's going to be a very long rebuild. "There is no Lahaina," resident Kekai Keahi told the Associated Press news agency. "Lahaina no exist anymore." I heard the famous banyan tree is gone. The whole thing hurts my heart as Lahaina Town was our favorite place to visit during our trips to Maui. It's been 34 years since I went there, but I remember how beautiful it was. We loved the banyan tree, too. How sad that it's gone.

I’m so heartbroken for Maui and Lahaina. It’s my most favorite place on earth and have amazing memories of Front Street. The history lost is just so said. I’m reading about the number of deaths going up as well. Devastating.

I live on Maui. We have 3 fires going. One in Kula, one in Kihei and the Lahaina fire. These fires were caused by the high winds generated by Hurricane Dora. They are predicting the winds will die down tomorrow. Front Street is destroyed. This is the street with all of the shops. The wharf is also destroyed. It's hard getting news cause cell phones, land lines and electricity are all gone. People have lost their homes and jobs. No traffic is allowed into Lahaina only out going traffic. What photos that are coming out is tragic. It looks like a war zone. They are discouraging people from coming in. They are asking people to cancel their trips. People already here are being encouraged to leave early since most of the tourists are either at shelters or sheltered in. The devastation is unbelievable. Please pray for Maui.

I have just had a news alert on my phone that there are now at least 36 dead. I have never been to Maui, but the photos of the damage are horrendous. I hope the communities are able to rebuild in time.

Friends of ours are on the Big Island for a wedding. I don't think that island has been hit as hard as Maui, but reports are so sporadic. I can't believe Lahaina is gone. How devastating!

This has been on my mind non-stop. As you get more info, please share anywhere to donate that will go to help directly. I stayed near and visited Kihei a lot too, I haven't seen as much of the footage on that one. And visited the lavender farms in Kula...oh man, this is just too much. Please stay well.++++

I'm just heartbroken over the devastation in Maui! We loved visiting Lahaina on our trips there. We stay in Kihei when we visit and I'm glad that so far they've been able to keep the fires near there from reaching the town. And we love upcountry Maui and have fond memories of the lavender farms in Kula. It's all so sad.
DD and her family live on the Big Island in South Kona and the fires on that island are pretty far north of them on the northwest side of the island (the Kohala district). She says the smoke from those fires as well as the fires on Maui have made the air pretty bad at their house. Where they live is pretty wet and tropical so the threat of fires there is much less than in the drier, desert parts of the island.

Wishing peace and safety to the people of Maui. It popped up on Facebook that we were at Fleetwood's for a concert on this day 7 years ago. Mick Fleetwood is reported to be devastated that his restaurant burned to the ground. So many iconic places lost. I can't imagine it.

Honolulu opened up their convention center for those that need to evacuate from Maui. They have room for 4,000. I guess most O’ahu hotels are booked with regular guests, so they need accommodations for the tourist displaced on Maui. Over 2,000 tourist had to spend the night at the airport in Maui.

We go to Maui every year and some of our best memories as a family have been on that island. We will be supporting the above organizations. At this time we do have a trip scheduled in December. If tourism is what is needed at that time, we will still go. *Marjorie* as time passes I would be very interested in organizations that could use some volunteers to aid in the recovery of this beautiful island.

It breaks my heart to see this happening. How terrifying. My SIL, BIL, and 2 nieces flew out of Maui on late Sunday evening/Monday morning. They had spent the week in Lahaina. I'm so thankful they were gone before this happened. My heart hurts for those who have lost their family members and friends.

It's devastating. Been many, many times and Lahaina was a must visit each time. So much history, the banyan tree, all of it gone. They may be able to rebuild, but it will never have the draw it had for decades or be even close to the same. So sad for all the people and the businesses; tourism there will never be the same.

I am so sorry Marjorie. This is absolutely devastating. Besides donating to the Red Cross, Hawaii Community Foundation and Maui Humane Society (the three major donation sites I’ve seen), is there anything else we can do? I’m sure the islands took a hit during Covid, and now people have lost their homes, jobs and loved ones in a matter of a day or two. Just unimaginable. 😢

In 2020 my 2 sisters and I visited Maui. We took a Road to Hana tour and our guide was a young man. He and his wife were just getting their tour company "on the ground." He had worked for another company and he decided that they could do it on their own. I looked up his company and sent him a note. I got back a reply this afternoon. He and his loved ones and friends are all OK. At the time he wrote this afternoon, all his employees and family were OK. That makes me feel good that my personal connection is OK. I am sure the condo where we stayed is gone. We visited the aquarium while there, and I will guess it is gone as well.

I am not on Maui, but as a Hawaiian, I ask that you all share with those planning to still travel to Maui in the near future to NOT visit. Maui needs to preserve all of its resources for those displaced by the fires. Locals do not want to hear any talk of "I'm still going to enjoy my Hawaiian vacation because locals NEED tourism." What we NEED is for you to stay home and leave hotel rooms available for people who do not have the luxury of even having extra clothes or their own space and food, etc ...
Also, let's not reduce the memory of Lahaina to being only a tourist attraction. Lahaina was the original capital of the Hawaiian kingdom. One of the buildings destroyed in the fire housed many precious cultural artifacts. For Native Hawaiians, the loss of tourism dollars pales in comparison to the loss of precious historical items.
