I am not on Maui, but as a Hawaiian, I ask that you all share with those planning to still travel to Maui in the near future to NOT visit. Maui needs to preserve all of its resources for those displaced by the fires. Locals do not want to hear any talk of "I'm still going to enjoy my Hawaiian vacation because locals NEED tourism." What we NEED is for you to stay home and leave hotel rooms available for people who do not have the luxury of even having extra clothes or their own space and food, etc ... Also, let's not reduce the memory of Lahaina to being only a tourist attraction. Lahaina was the original capital of the Hawaiian kingdom. One of the buildings destroyed in the fire housed many precious cultural artifacts. For Native Hawaiians, the loss of tourism dollars pales in comparison to the loss of precious historical items. Many thanks for your post. I'm heartbroken for the people of Maui and agree the last thing they need is tourists right now. I would def. not be heading there soon, trip booked and paid for or not. Dittoing monicad ... please let us know of other ways in which to help. I'm off to make a donation to the Hawaii Community Foundation suggested by Barack Obama and others.

It's Marjorie again. I just want to say that the aquarium is still here. The only areas destroyed by the fire is the Lahaina main proper on the West side of the island. Front street and the areas above that. The fire stopped north right at the Chart House if you're familiar with Lahaina. It stopped South of Puamana. Not all houses were destroyed in that area. Kaanapali and beyond is fine. However, still no electricity. Cell service is available in some areas. Maui Strong is another organization you can donate to. Also, in regards to visiting our Island As you know Hawaii relies heavily on tourism. Our Governor and Mayor heavily advises not to book trips to the Lahaina area but Wailea and other parts of our island are still open. We have people who rely on hospitality for their living. Instead of totally canceling your trips maybe they can be revised to visit other parts of our beautiful island. Maybe not right now but in the future. Thank you for all your well wishes.
