My daughter and I are planning a trip to Europe in 2025. Top of the list so far is Italy & Greece. We have our passports already from our trip this year to Mexico. My daughter was told (unreliable source) that you also need a Visa to travel to Europe. I thought you only needed a Visa if you planned to work or go to school. Do you now also need one for a vacation?
I figured if anyone could give me a straight up answer on this it would be the Peas!
P.S. If anyone has any suggestions on an itinerary for Italy/Greece please share. We plan to map this out ourselves but if I get overwhelming suggestions to go with a Travel Agent then we may check that out instead. All plans are very much still up in the air including location and dates.

I'm pretty sure it is only if you are planning to stay longer than 90 days.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe for vacation?
Starting in 2024, U.S. passport holders traveling to Europe will need to apply for authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before their visit. While U.S. nationals currently enjoy visa-free access to most E.U.Jul 25, 2023

Starting in 2024, you will need an ETIAS to enter, which is not a visa, but is a travel authorization. More information is here ETIAS

Latest information I saw was that the ETIAS scheme will begin on 1.1.2024.

In answer to your question about itineraries, I highly suggest joining the Italy Travel Planning Facebook group; moderated by Katy Clarke, who has loads of information on her Untold Italy website. It's a very active group with information regarding every aspect of Italy travel.
