Can anyone hear help a mama out? My 13 yo DD is going into 8th grade and wants more cute, trendy clothes. As someone who doesn’t know (or really care) about up and coming fashion, I’m really no help. I ask her what she’s looking for and she says she doesn’t know. From what she has pointed out, she seems to like stuff that I would call kind of preppy, shirts with collars, pleated knee length/mini skirts, sweater vests, knee socks. It doesn’t help that the kid HATES shopping. She’s also more on the apple shape of the spectrum, so a lot of the really tight, cropped shirts that come up when I Google really wouldn’t be appropriate for school which is where she would likely wear these things. I want to shop in person if possible because I don’t know what size she wears in more fitted clothes so she needs to try things on. She has never liked jeans and would only wear stretchy joggers or leggings, lately I’ve been buying her women’s size medium in those things. I don’t even know which stores to go to begin to look for what she wants. The last time I took her to a mall it was a disaster because we didn’t know which stores to zone in on so it took a long time and she got super crabby. I usually buy her nice Danskin leggings or Adidas joggers from Costco, graphic tees in designs she likes whenever I see them, and she’s stolen a bunch of my 1990’s sweatshirts (LOL) so those kinds of things are covered. I’d like to avoid Amazon and Shein type places because the sizing is so weird. Picture day is coming up quick which was what spurred this whole (non)discussion with her. Help!

My college aged daughter likes American Eagle, Hollister, Old Navy, and Target. My niece who is in high school also likes to shop at these stores.

Old Navy and Target are safe bets. Brandy Melville is very trendy here but all their clothes are one size and look the same. So she will either love it or hate it.

Is Delia's still around? That was really big when our daughter was in middle school but that was 10 years ago so maybe not anymore?

That was a nightmare age to find clothes! I do think she needs to go shopping in person, possibly to some of the places that have been mentioned as, at some point she needs to figure out sizing and what actually attracts her.

My 14-year-old DD seems to stick to Old Navy and thrift stores, particularly Plato's Closet if you have one near you. She leans a little more Cottagecore then preppy but I think it's worth your time trying that kind of place. Also try TJ Maxx/Marshalls as they've always seemed to be a good place to find Polo shirts and you might find other items on her wishlist.

I have a teen and tween girl and one is leaning more witchy/goth and the other is Kawaii/pastels - they both found stuff at Hot Topic the other day when they went to the mall with DH. The preppy stuff sounds like American Eagle, Hollister, Forever21? I hate the mall, so I'm sorry if you and your girl hate it, too, but you might have to suck it up and go. I recommend checking the map ahead of time for the store locations so you have a quickie game plan (that's what I have to do with my shopping-adverse teen) so we have a plan. "Okay, we go in these doors, head to this place, down the escalator to this place, around the corner to here, and we're out." Also, when DH took the kids some of the stores had funky hours. He's not sure if it was because it was a Sunday, but some stores just flat out didn't open. The ones I mentioned were, but I'd check the hours, too. Good luck!

Garage is one of my daughter’s favorites. American eagle, aerie, hollister, Abercrombie, Tilly’s, sometimes forever 21 or Windsor. Online she does a lot of shopping at Shein, and some of their stuff is available on Amazon with easy returns

Plato's Closet is extremely popular here for teen clothes. I give my kids a set amount of money and they get more bang for their buck at Plato's Closet.
They also shopped H&M, Hollister, Target, Old Navy, and my daughters do some shopping on Shein (so far, my boys haven't shopped Shein, but that could always change!).

American Eagle, Hollister, PacSun and Brandy Melville have some cute stuff for that age group! Target also has some great choices— the Wild Fable brand there is really cute!

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I’ll have DD look online at the websites for these places and see if there is anything specific she likes and go from there. And LOL when DH overheard us talking, his contribution to the conversation was to suggest buying her a $50 Polaris sweatshirt… um, NO. Not helpful, LOL.

My girls like hats, shirts, and sweatshirts from Carhaart. He might not be too far off the mark. They always liked college shirts and sweatshirts too.

She is specifically asking for “cuter” nicer looking more trendy clothes like what she sees the other girls wearing at school.
