It’s been 9 days since my brother passed away. My SIL and I did a girls’ day today. We went down to Summerland, a cute little beach town just South of Santa Barbara. We went shopping in some bougie stores and had a delicious lunch (tarragon chicken salad and roasted Brussels sprouts) and then we went wine tasting (I was careful and limited the amount I drank but let my SIL go wild.) Then we came home and got McConnell’s ice cream (salted caramel banana). And then went and got mani-pedi’s (my SIL got black polish with green on just her wedding ring finger to honor my brother). Now we’re going to have girl dinner, drink a bottle of wine from the winery and watch The Summer I Turned Pretty. We’re still sad and miss my brother terribly, but we’re trying to have fun. I’ve been back at work all week (kids start Wednesday) but her first day back is Monday (she could take longer, but wants to keep busy). Food, wine and shopping really are great therapy.

I’m so sorry about the loss of your brother but it sounds like you had a wonderful day of pampering yourselves.
I lost my brother in 2017 and I see my SIL almost every week. I love the bond that we have. It keeps his memory alive as we talk about him all of the time.

It sounds like a perfectly wonderful way for the two of you to spend time with one another while beginning to heal a little.

It sounds like a lovely day! Especially that part about salted caramel banana ice cream! And a beach town. sigh... lol
Your brother was sick for so long, and you said he was in pain at the end (which hopefully hospice was able to alleviate)... So it's going to be a mix of emotions between grief and relief, and doing something fun is part of that. People often tell me (when I'm wearing my hospital chaplain hat) that they felt guilty for enjoying things after the death of someone close to them. But it's not "either/or", it can be "both". Sounds like you and your SIL are embracing the "both".
eta to wish you luck for the first day of school! Be sure to let us know how it went, how the kids are, how many there are, etc., etc.

It is so important to be kind to yourself. You sound like a great support to your sil. I hope the routine of work is helpful to you. I lost my mom unexpectedly in May and I really struggled that summer. I was sometimes in bed until noon, up at all hours of the night, not eating well, etc. While it was nice to not have to deal with my job I often thought that the routine of work might have been good for me at that time.

Yes, this is all good therapy. Plus ~~~ Have you ever seen a Hearse pulling a U-Haul behind it. You come into the world with nothing and you leave with nothing, enjoy the *dash* *---*, as that part is your life. My family is well aware that I am enjoying my retirement (within reason) and that I give them things (money, stuff to make their life more enjoyable) with a *warm hand*. Nothing good comes from a cold hand.
