It never fails. School starts and the heat ramps up. Today is 96 feels like 115. Thursday and Friday temps alone are predicted to be 103-106.
I am in Iowa. I went to my building today for some final touches and it was 83 in my classroom. I’m dreading filling the space with 31 little bodies.

Ugh do you have no air? It’s been well over 100 every day here, but we have air. The worst part is car duty after school! It took us 2 hours on day 1 because we are a brand new school. We had several teacher including myself that had to go inside and take breaks. At one point I thought I was going to pass out. Thankfully we got staff and parents trained and have it down to about 30 minutes now.

Older building with ridiculous old open concept and the units just can’t keep up. Major hvac issues at our local high school also, and evidently parts are expected sometime in October. So no air there. My son has already asked to skip the first few days and I can’t say I blame him!!

I feel for you! It happened every year I taught too. It was too hot! I would go out to my car after school and the temp would read 118.
For many, many years we didn't have air conditioning and they wouldn't cancel school. Our school didn't get air until 2014 or 2015. It was bad....really bad. For the first couple of weeks we crammed in what we could in the morning and then pretty much baby sat in the afternoon.

We have air doing school hours, but not after school or on weekends. Normally, we aren’t allowed in the school on weekends, but today we were granted 3 hours - oh, yay - in the heat with no a/c, in order to help give us time to get ready.
Tomorrow, for the first day of school, the temp will get up to 95 with a heat index in the 100’s because it is so humid.

This why school should not start until after Labor Day. Last week was our first full week. Crews are still working on our heat pumps. Sometimes the air is great. Sometimes not so much. We are expecting high 90s to 100s for the first time all summer. Yuck!

I went to U of I and I remember every time I returned from summer break. It would be hot in NYC but bearable. I would get to Iowa and be in utter shock that it was so hot. And from what I remember it would stay warmer in Iowa longer. I understand your pain.

It's going to be five billion degrees, no shade, and of course the first few days take forever. I'm so sorry for those of you who don't have AC in your buildings. As our climate warms up, that is going to become more and more of an issue. Parents - want to know what you can do to help your teachers? Learn and follow the carpool requirements from day 1. Teach your kinders to unbuckle, open the door, and get out of the car on their own before school starts. Finish your goodbyes before you pull up and make sure they already have their shoes on, lunch and backpack in hand. Also teach them to recognize their own car from the outside and to quickly hop in the seat when the door is opened. The carpool line is not the place to chat with the teacher or send a message to someone inside.

Or maybe school infrastructure should be appropriately funded nationwide so school buildings can be maintained and/or updated as needed? I’m so glad my kid attends a modern, well funded school that doesn’t have those issues. I remember attending grade school in a really old building that was literally falling apart, with no air conditioning other than in the main office (window unit) and the rest of the school only had windows that would open maybe 8”. 🥵 We did start after Labor Day but would end up not getting out until the first or second week of June which was equally miserable. Plus we had uniforms and I refused to wear a plaid jumper skirt, so I ended up wearing navy blue corduroy pants when it was 90°. Good times, good times. (NOT)

The carpool line is not the place to chat with the teacher or send a message to someone inside. I’ll add to that. Also parents of little ones, be aware. Your child most likely will not recognize your car. If you see your child roll down your window, wave your hand, call out to them. Just do something to help us find you. Lastly, no one should be on their phone during car pickup. I cannot tell you the number of times Ive almost been hit.

I’m in MN. I am glad we don’t start until after Labor Day. It always seems like the temps drop quickly once school starts for us. Many schools here don’t have AC, though.

83 degrees plus adding 31 kids... you are going to have a miserably hot first few days back to school. Ugh! I'm so sorry!

It was 98 when we were scheduled to go out for recess yesterday and today. Due to the heat index being around 110 we were told not to go out. We do have air conditioning.
I have 28 fifth graders in a not-very-big room. There’s no place for them to get up and move around, so indoor recess is a joke.
I had to give them 15 minutes on their Chromebook as “recess”. My last section was WILD because they had done nothing but sit all day.

We start next week and most of our district's schools do not have air conditioning. It's half days all week. My son can have seizures from overheating. I'm going to keep him home if they have issues like they did last year.

We start just one week before Labor Day and it's all half days. The last few years, it has not cooled down much until the end of September. Even when it's only 70 outside, it can be unbearable in the classrooms. Many of our schools don't have AC either. It seems to remain hotter each year, but maybe it's just me.

Denver had to send kids home early due to heat and no ac. We were complaining today, but really it wasn't horrible, just needed more air movement.
