Even though I'm just up the HWY in Seattle, I haven't spent time in Portland proper for a couple of decades A friend and I are heading down for a couple of nights soon. We're mainly going down to go to the Dahlia Farm out in Canby (I went there two years ago on my way home from a different trip and its just so pretty), and have exactly NO agenda for the rest of the time. She and I are laid back when we travel together, so we definitely won't be go-go-going from sunup to sundown. If the weather is decent, we both like being outside, but are fine with indoor suggestions too. And if there are any walks that have a great view or points of interest, we'd definitely be into that. We both enjoy eating well Any shows/concerts/things like that you'd recommend? Any other fun special events that we should look into and/or is there a good website we could look for unusual events? We are planning on the Rose Garden, visiting the Troll, and the Saturday Market (is that still fun?).
Thanks a bunch for any suggestions! ETA: we are staying on the water several block south of the Burnside Bridge. ETA2: anything of interest on the drive from DT to Canby?

I am down there a few times a year and I like walking around Mt. Tabor Park. Nice views, pretty big--parking can be an issue. It's also near the Hawthorne branch of Powell's Bookstore, which isn't as impressive as the main branch but still pretty great. I also like Council Crest Park for the views, although it's small so not much walking.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants Le Pigeon. I haven't been to Portland for many years but you can't go wrong.

There is a store called Urbanite that does not fail to impress.

Portland Leather Goods, both the main store and outlet, is on my list to visit eventually.

Well, both of my DDs live there - one in Portland proper, and the other just over the bridge in Vancouver, WA. When we visit we love the Arboretum (lots of great walks there), The Japanese Garden, and the Rose Garden (which you already have on your list). I know there are others I'm not thinking of at the moment...will consult DDs and come back to update.

Portland Leather Goods, both the main store and outlet, is on my list to visit eventually. I have only visited their website (much to my wallet's detriment LOL) and have not come away empty-handed either time...I'm afraid it would be too much for my willpower to visit in person. Kinda like how it was probably a good thing that I only had time for about an hour in Powell's last time I was out there...

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants Le Pigeon. I haven't been to Portland for many years but you can't go wrong. Fully booked the evening that we’d like to go. It looks lovely though so I’ll keep checking back to see if something opens up.

I second Urbanite! If you also enjoy antique shopping, Aurora is close to Canby and there are many fun stores, including Aurora Mills ( instagram.com/auroramills?igshid=NzZhOTFlYzFmZQ== ) And the restaurant Filbert's Farmhouse in Aurora is both charming and delicious! Enjoy the dahlias!

There's a beautiful chocolate and gift shop in Milwaukie called Enchante Chocolatier. It's in the little historic downtown of Milwaukie.
If you like antiques, I love Monticello Antique Marketplace. Stars Antique mall is fun as well.
In Aurora there a bunch of antique stores and I will second the recommendation for Filbert's Farmhouse.

We were there last year and loved walking through the Lan Su Chinese Garden. We took a trolley tour of the city that let us walk around the International Rose Test Garden for a little while. The flowers were just gorgeous!
We also took a ride to Vancouver to have lunch and walk around the new waterfront area and then headed up the Columbia River Gorge to see the views and waterfalls.
Be sure to stop at Blue Star Donuts if you cross the river - they were amazing.
There was a charming coffee shop called Lotus & Bean that had great coffee and treats.
We had some really good food at Mamma Mia Trattoria near the waterfront.
Enjoy the visit!
