Tears of happiness! (Sorry for the clickbait).
I mean it. I actually teared up lat week. I love it so much. My school is amazing. My coworkers are so nice and helpful, my fifth grade partner and I work really well together (she’s a young but experienced teacher—new to the school as well), and my principal is easy going and fun.
But most of all, the kids are AMAZING. They are excited and enthusiastic about everything we do. They love to read, and dance and be silly. And they LOVE to sing. Last year, my kids would just roll their eyes and groan whenever I played music. These kids beg for music breaks. The first day, I played Try Everything by Shakira, and one of the boys asked “Can we sing?” and I was like HECK YA. And they did—they were all singing. Yesterday, they were belting out I Want it That way by The Backstreet Boys and they choose Never Gonna Give You Up as our class theme song.
Not one single kid has argued with me, talked back or rolled their eyes at me. They get silly sometimes, but if I say cut it out, they cut it out. Most of the kids at this school come from very privileged homes, and I admit, I was a little worried they would be entitled. But they aren’t…not even one tiny bit. They are polite and helpful and grateful. We do have about 15% of kids that come from lower income homes, and all the kids get along great—there is no segregation between the kids. Yesterday, I had them bring in pictures and stickers to decorate their writing notebooks. Several brought in those big, thick, EXPENSIVE sticker books. And those stickers were flying around that room. Everybody was sharing…no drama, no selfishness.
This school has not had new teachers in years…it would be so easy for them to treat me like an outsider…but I haven’t felt that way one time. It’s the happiest I have felt as a teacher since before Covid.
I also have to say I’m LOVING 5th grade. They are so independent! And we are buddies with the kinder classes, so I get my kinder fix once a week. And I’m still in touch with my old staff from last year…I went to their happy hour last week and it was so good seeing them all. After a long, hard, HARD year…I deserve this happiness. Thanks for hanging in there with me!
