My nearest Target has all the laundry detergent aisles in locked cases, and my Fred Meyer (grocery store) has not only security guards but these metal arm things that automatically open to get in but you can’t use them to get out of the store.
I get why they’re doing it, but it makes it hard to shop when you have to get the cases unlocked and the maze they’ve made to leave the store…
ETA: it's the laundry detergent, deodorant, and toothpaste aisles that have locked cases. I had to run in there to grab something a few minutes ago...

Laundry detergent theft is a huge problem according to Google…

I don’t shop in person much these days, but I’ve only seen it in craft stores. Mostly items that kids use to get high, I don’t know if I’ve seen anything locked to help avoid theft.

Wow, breetheflea I just can't relate to that at all.😲 Laundry detergent is completely unrestricted in my neck of the woods. Off the top of my head, the only things I can think of that are locked up in supermarkets are cigarettes, tobacco/filters/papers, and vaping products. ETA: And those things are locked at the checkout so the checkout assistant unlocks them on request as part of the checkout process.

I don't know where it was but I heard they built a 10-foot fence around a store somewhere and the city officials were flummoxed as to why. Clueless.

I don't understand, why does the laundry detergent need to be locked up? Even years ago when I was working at a grocery store.. detergent was a huge theft item... just think over $20 for a jug of Tide .. high dollar stuff. Diapers are also a high theft/coupon scam item. We had bars added by the front doors so you can only go in one way. At Walmart I heard all the makeup items have to be paid in their own department which has been sealed off.. gotta go through those door things again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rukHkHV5A50This is the store I literally shop at (and used to work)

My local Walmart has a lot of things locked up. Even inexpensive stuff. SO wanted a small toolbox. It costs about $10 and it was locked up. They even had $2 tools locked up. Some of the lotions and cream I liked are locked up. I just go to Target and buy it. Our local Target doesn’t have anything locked up (besides electronics). And these two stores are in the same city. In Hawaii, they put Spam and Corned Beef Hash in those big plastic locked boxes. 😆
But, back in the 90’s, there was this hobby store I would go to to buy rubber stamps. All their craft supplies were in locked cases or behind the counter. You had to ask for what you wanted. It was inconvenient, but they carried rubber stamps I liked.

Some stores here do a ton of it, some don't. There is a Target I avoid because so much stuff is locked up and it's inconvenient to wait for each item to get unlocked. There is also a drugstore near work where I won't go because a ton of products are locked up and the staff gets really shirty about being asked to unlock it (once I had to wait for a person to come back from a break).
I have ended up setting up auto-delivery for a lot of items on Amazon.

Many stores have locked display cases.
One staff member, covering multiple aisles to do the unlocking. The wait times are ridiculous and annoying. I waited about 12 minutes to get deodorant. I bought three, so it lasts awhile....to avoid the wait.
There's no rhyme or reason to who is next. I've went and found the staff member and asked "will you please come to aisle (whatever #) when you are done here, yes I'll be right there".....then I stand at the end of the aisle watching for them, only see them intercepted multiple times along their way to me. If there are multiple people waiting in one aisle, they help the first person they encounter...not the person who was first one waiting.
There's no rhyme or reason, to what gets locked up and what doesn't.

Goodness workingclassdog , the couple in that video were so brazen?! 😲 I occasionally see news stories about people stealing from supermarkets (like this one from two days ago) but it's tended to be in cities further north of where I live. Some of the other Kiwi peas might have different experiences than me though.

Earlier this year, the Walmart that I frequent the most had all of its Dove products locked up in a case. I'm talking about Dove bar soap, body wash, hand lotion, etc. I thought it was so bizarre. All of the other brands of bar soap were just sitting out on the shelf not locked up.

Our local Walmart has almost all of the personal hygiene stuff locked up and all the makeup is in a section where you have to pay a cashier before leaving the section. They won't even put the makeup in a lockbox so you can pay at the front register.
Our local target does not have anything locked up...yet.

I noticed at our Fred Meyer that they have baby formula locked up.
My son used to be the loss prevention manager at Target and yes, laundry detergent is a high theft item. Apparently, drug users steal it and resell it for cash to buy drugs.
I have only recently started shopping at Walmart (after a long hiatus) A lot of stuff in the cosmetic area is in locked cases. They do have someone posted at the entrance to that section and it doesn't take long to get what you are looking for.

I've seen all sorts of things locked up at stores near me - batteries, makeup.
There is a lady on my local Facebook Marketplace group that has been selling "curated collections" of new laundry detergent and cleaning supplies. People are accusing her of shoplifting them to sell.

It depends on the store. Cosmetics in Walmart and Walgreens have been locked for years. I've seen razor blades locked up for quite some time. Laundry detergent took a huge price increase recently. I was paying $19.99 for a long while, then it went to $21.99. Stayed at the price for about a year and then all of the sudden, it is now $27.xx. One thing that shoudl be cheap is soap of any kind! Overall, it is not an expensive item to produce.

the saddest thing about this thread is the fact that people are desperate enough to steal laundry detergent, diapers and formula.

I haven't noticed anything at the stores I go to. I heard that another local Walmart has things like mens underwear locked up but I haven't been there to see if that is true. I was in Chicago last month and stopped at a Walgreens. There was a security guard and I noticed that they had some things locked up. But it was weird because they would have some brands of an item locked but not others and it didn't really seem to matter if it was the more expensive item of that type or not. It was pretty late in the evening so I don't know if that had anything to do with the guard or not.

Laundry detergent theft is a huge problem according to Google… SNAP benefits can not be used for laundry detergent or even bath soap. The agency I use to volunteer for bought detergent in bulk to give to clients.

Prophylactics, higher end beauty and I think one has detergent locked up.

Our Walmart has a ton of things locked up. Buying men’s socks, underwear and even some shirts and pants were locked up a few years ago. It made shopping a total pain. Health snd beauty items are in an enclosed area snd you have to pay before you leave the area. DVDs and games are locked up. It makes shopping a pain.
If I know exactly what I want I order it curbside especially if I know it’s a locked up item.
Target on the other side of town doesn’t do this but they are more expensive and just closed their self check outs.

Yes, the three Walmarts within driving distance of my house have had the majority of their items under lock and key for several years now. It's impossible to find an employee with a key and when you finally do get one a line of other customers waiting for them forms which means you really can't take your time picking your items out. So far, our 1 Target isn't locking up much. Personally I refuse to shop that way and will shop at other stores.

Does anyone remember shopping at Service Merchandise? They had hardly any “grab and go” items. Instead, you got to shop by looking at “floor models” and filled out a form to buy what you wanted, and the stick clerks fulfilled your item and sent it out to you via conveyor belt. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that kind of store model come back.
It wouldn’t work that great for groceries, but it might be a way to protect high dollar items. Of course, stores could just go to a “No customers in the store—online and pick up only” model.

I tend to shop more online or curbside if items are locked up. I expect sone items like spray paint but not men’s socks.

With all the blatent shoplifting, people buying so much online instead of in stores, malls dying, etc... I wonder what shopping will look like in 25-50 years.🤔 It just might all go to the Service Merchandise model.

Target stores near me have some of the small electronics locked up. I wanted to buy a wi-fi booster, but it was locked up. That was fine, except the sign said "Sorry I missed you, back at 2:30." It was 10 am! I bought it online, but it was annoying.
