I've hit a milestone today in my cancer journey. 5 years ago I started my way toward the 5 year mark of being breast cancer free. 5 years is a big milestone because I can stop taking my estrogen blocker and my reoccurrence rate of cancer goes way down.
Thank you to the peas who were there with me through my journey. It's been a long road but I'm glad to be on the other side!

Congrats Tearisci. I am almost there! I had my 5-year mammogram a few months ago and it was clear, and will see my gyn next month to be signed off the hormone blockers and talk about what happens next.

Amazing news - congratulations!
May I ask, at which point did you start taking the AIs? I had my diagnosis in the January 21, surgery (curative) in March, just-in-case chemo May to September, began AIs in October. I'm nearly at the 2-year AI point. Did you have to have 5 years of AIs, or is your 5-year mark from diagnosis?

Not OP, but my timeline was: Diagnosis mid-May, Surgery early July, radiation through August, then onto the meds early September. So I will have 5 years of taking the medication. My Gyn considered cutting it back last year, as she said the new recommendation for the type of cancer I had is 3 years, but we decided to keep me on the initially agreed protocol.

This is the 5 year mark from the day after diagnosis when you become a survivor. I need to talk with my dr for sure but she did say at the 5 year mark, I could stop taking them. Wishing you well on your journey!!

Yes, I guess that's what I'll get. May I ask what yours was? Mine was HER2+ and HER2-, both PR+/ER+. I'm on Exemestane, having had crummy side effects from Letrozole and Anastrazole. The Exemestane isn't great either, but not as awful as the others. I can't wait to get off it.

Wishing you well on your journey!! AIs = Aromatase Inhibitors which block progesterone and oestrogen, eg. Letrozole, Anastrazole, Exemestane. They are used in post-menopausal women. Tamoxifen is used for pre-menopausal women. It only blocks oestrogen so it is not an AI. I was PR+ and ER+.
